2 JUNE 25, 2017 PSALTER WEEK IV From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, The theme of this Sunday is one that afflicts us Christians very much due to the violence of atheistic regimes on one side and of the Muslim fundamentalists on the other. But if we look to the history of our Christian Church we know that there is no century without persecution. Instructive is comparing the expansion of the two biggest monotheistic religions: Christians and Muslims. For the first 300 years after Jesus ascension, we Christians expanded under imperial Roman persecutions, the Muslims expanded by the Muslim armies which obliterated the most ancient region of Christianity by shedding blood, forcing conversion or keeping Christians and Jews just a little bit better than slaves. But please, keep in mind, that the overwhelming majority of our Muslim brothers and sisters are peaceful people as we Christians are. And we all believe in the same one God, creator of heaven and earth. Both religions venerate Mary, recognizing her virginal birth of Jesus. In Mother Mary we are all united, so lets ask Mary to unite us, not just in the faith of one God, but in the practice of respect and love of one another s faith. God s love will get us together as brothers and sisters in the family of God. The gospel today, following the prophet Jeremiah, gives us all Jesus prophetic message of remaining faithful to Him under persecution. Fear no one...do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. And even in our free country we face the implacable hatred of our atheists who, denying the very existence of God, try everything and everywhere to eradicate faith from our beloved country. They, through mass media, the entertainment industry, subversive college professors and court challenges ridicule and oppress us. The ACLU finds one atheist opposed to the Christmas nativity in a public space, and a thousand believers in the same village must deny themselves of a beloved symbol of God. By the way, these cowards do not dare touch or oppose Muslim or Jewish religious symbols! Naturally we pray for our persecutors so that they be converted and stop murdering us or suppressing our faith. So let us stick with Jesus without fear because if we deny Him for some little transitory material gain in this life, He will deny us before His Heavenly Father. Glorious eternity awaits all of us! Thursday, June 29 is the Feast of the two great pillars of Christianity: St. Peter and St. Paul. This solemnity brings us the memory of the two rails on which runs the train of the original Church of Christ. The Pope was represented by Peter, and the teaching magisterium of the Church was represented by the great teacher, Paul. So, we the followers of Jesus recall the two great apostles that He left (Peter) or sent (Paul, after his conversion) to his budding church. It does seem ironic that a Jewish fisherman and a rabbi, who once persecuted the Christians, would be honored two thousand years later as the champions of the Church of Christ. June 29th is also the day when we Catholics pray for the Pope, and reaffirm our unshakable belief in the dogma of the inerrancy of the Pope. Papal infallibility, or inerrancy, is a dogma rooted in the Bible. The papacy grew out of the mission of Peter (born Simon bar Jonah), an uneducated common fisherman, from the village of Capernaum, who nonetheless became the leading disciple of Jesus, and changed his name from Simon to Cephas, which more accurately would sound like Rocky in our colloquial English. In Matthews Gospel (16: 18-19), Jesus gives Peter the keys of authority to admit or exclude, and promised that Peter s primacy among the apostles will survive Peter s death. From this awesome power, given inexplicably to Peter, one could infer that this fisherman was an exceedingly smart genius far from it! Many unflattering remembrances about Peter are immortalized in the Gospel! The most famous is the painful and shameful denial of Jesus (Mk 16: 66-72) in the courtyard. Even outside the Bible, one very ancient Roman tradition, immortalized in the Quo Vadis chapel on the Appian Way, makes use of the fumbling fisherman s shoes! The most obvious question that comes to mind is How could Jesus make such a stupid choice? My answer is based on the last chapter of John s Gospel (21: 15-19) when Peter thrice reaffirmed his undying love for Jesus because, as Jesus himself said (Lk 7: 47): So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little. The great lesson from Peter s choice by Jesus is this: we are judged by God not only on our successes or talents but primarily by our love of God, of neighbors, of ourselves. As the song says: And They ll Know We are Christians by our Love. As Paul remarked (1 Cor 13), everything will pass away - - riches, health, possessions, hope and knowledge - - because in Paradise we will find God alone, and God is Love! (1 Jn 4:8). Let us pray for our beloved Pope Francis that the Lord may grant him an incredible amount of wisdom and mercy for all of us faltering sheep of Jesus family. We miss seeing many smiling faces not present in Church now, and I want again to wish all of you a beautiful, restful vacation, as we priests are likewise doing. Please remember to attend Sunday Mass when on vacation! Next Sunday is Caritas Sunday, when the members of Caritas (all volunteers) seek your donations at the doors of the church to help them continue to assist the needy of our area. Last month, you dear parishioners, gave Caritas $4,167. Please be generous. Help to make up for all our parishioners who are on vacation. God will reward you.

3 12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Next week we will take up the Peter s Pence collection, which provides the Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. See the letter from our Bishop in this bulletin. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry Deacons Bill and Patrick; plus Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence and Sisters Cathy & Marianne St. Martha Catholic School and St. Mary Academy are now accepting applications for the 2017/2018 school year. After the ascension, Acts describes Peter as the chief of the apostles and, from the middle of the third century onward, documents show that the bishops of Rome were recognized as the successors of Peter. Paul, the apostle of the Gentiles, was born a Roman citizen in Tarsus and educated as a Pharisee. His experience of the risen Christ resulted in his conversion. He went to Jerusalem and, through the intervention of Barnabas, came to be trusted and accepted in the Christian community. In Acts, Luke describes Paul s missionary journeys, his return to Jerusalem, his arrest, and his appeal to Caesar. Like these two great apostles, may we offer ourselves fully in Christ s service no matter what the cost. Living with Christ ST. MARTHA HAS AN APP! 4 BULLETIN If a sparrow does not fall to the ground without the Father s knowledge, what about a tiny unborn child killed, in secret, by chemical abortions (sometimes masquerading as birth control), or a new human embryo destroyed, in secret, in a laboratory in the name of research?? A Message from our Bishop Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Peter's Pence Collection allows all the faithful the opportunity to participate and support the charitable work of Pope Francis as he reaches out to those who are marginalized and suffering around the globe. By supporting this collection, you join the Holy Father in bringing a little more mercy into the world. Pope Francis asked us in his 2016 Urbi et Orbi address, "May efforts be made everywhere to promote the culture of encounter, justice and reciprocal respect, which alone can guarantee the spiritual and material welfare of all people." The Peter's Pence Collection allows us all to be part of the Church's effort to promote a culture of encounter and justice. It is precisely your support that makes it possible for the Holy Father to carry out his charitable works around the world, to enable the Pope in assisting victims of war, natural disasters, human trafficking, hunger, and other challenges. This Collection will take place in the Diocese of Venice on July 1 and 2, Let us join with our brothers and sisters in faith from around the globe to help Pope Francis reach the marginalized in our world. Please prayerfully consider how you can best support the collection this year. I take this opportunity to assure you and your families of my continued consideration as well as my prayers. Thank you for your generosity! Sincerely yours in Christ, + Bishop Frank J. 5 In this communion communion means common-union we form a great family, where every member is helped and sustained by the others. -Pope Francis WE ARE HUMAN, WE ARE SINNERS We are reminded in today s readings that we are human, and that as a result of that we are sinners, and we inherit that sin from the very beginning, from Adam. St. Paul points that out in our Second Reading from Romans 2. Were you aware that in Hebrew the name Adam means humanity? In today s Gospel Reading from Matthew, Jesus also reminds us of the fact that we are sinners, but He also prompts us to remember that one of the reasons we sin is because we fear other humans and the consequences of living out our faith more than we fear the Lord Himself. Jesus says, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Gehenna is translated in some Bible versions as Hell. What the Lord is trying to communicate to us may be that we probably tend to fear earthly matters and earthly people more than we fear God. If we are killed by someone or something on earth it is the body only which dies. However, shrinking back from God s call can have eternal consequences. Saving grace and being saved are probably not thoughts on which we like to dwell, but they are real, and we need to recognize that. St. Alphonsus Liguori wrote, The saved are few, but we must live with the few if we would be saved with the few. O God, too few indeed they are; yet amongst those few I wish to be. Jeremías 20:13 NO TENGAN MIEDO! No tenemos nada y a nadie a quien temer. Copyright J. S.
