2 DECEMBER 4, 2016 From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Have you noticed in the Nativity scene how the baby Jesus keeps His tiny hands? Usually it is with halfoutreached arms with empty palms up, and do you know why? Because He is thinking: Look at these good Catholics... it is MY birthday and look who is getting the gifts! NOT ME but them! Listen to Jesus my good Christians. If you have a birthday party for your child - maybe at McDonalds - and all the friends bring a gift, and they give gifts to each other and no gift to the birthday child... what would the birthday child think of those friends? But what can we give to Jesus? In our hearts, Jesus is buried under a ton of material burdens and sins; a humble and contrite heart, purified by confession, is the best gift we can give to Jesus (Confession, Holy Communion and Almsgiving). All of us are sinners, from the Pope down to the Bishops, to us priests, and deacons, to all human beings. All of us need God s forgiveness. And Jesus will, in the confessional, forgive us every sin: murder, hatred, malicious gossip, abortion, missing Sunday Masses, neglecting the poor, drunkenness, excessive gambling, hazardous behavior toward creation, reckless driving, etc., etc.!!! I know that sometimes we worry about nonsensical things like, I don t go to confession because I don t remember my act of contrition! Any verbal expression of sorrow is OK, like Jesus, I ll sin no more. Or It is twenty-some years since I ve been to confession (twenty-some years?) Well, welcome back home! Why wait? Are we sure we are going to live another year? Let s go now to confession and receive the peace of Jesus. Look at our upcoming Christmas confession schedule, and plan to come! As you know, parishes are very dependent on a very generous Christmas and Easter Collection, even if nowadays times are so difficult. If you will be away, please use your Christmas envelope, either before you go or after you return. Or you can enroll with our On-Line Giving program through our website at If you do not normally use an envelope, or are a visitor here at Christmas, please use the envelopes in the pews or at the entrance of the Church and Hall. Make checks payable to St. Martha Church. Thanks a zillion! St. Jude Church with Fr. Celestino is having their annual Christmas for the Needy program again this year, and the need is greater than ever. Fr. Celestino says: I humbly ask you to please share with the less fortunate of our community of immigrants at St. Jude Catholic Church. If you can find it in your heart and are able, please make a donation, or bring a new, unwrapped toy to St. Jude Parish office, th St., Sarasota, during the month of December. If you have any questions, call St. Jude s Church at Thursday, December 8 is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Mass times will be 4 pm and 5:30 pm PSALTER WEEK II Vigil on Wednesday, December 7 and 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am, 12 pm, and 5:30 pm on Thursday December 8. Please allow me to clear up some confusion about the two dogmas related to Jesus birth. The Virginal birth of Jesus tells us that Jesus was conceived in Mary s womb through the power of the Holy Spirit without any human intervention. As Catholic theologians say; Maria Virgo ante partum, in partu, post partum - Mary, a virgin before, during and after birth. The Immaculate Conception of Mary is based on the salutation of the angel Hail Mary, Full of Grace. This term means that Mary received from God all possible graces and favor! So, also, the favor to be born without the Original Sin, or any other stain of sin (immaculate in Latin means: without stain). Christmas is a time of family parties. Enjoy your Christmas; BUT if you drive, please do not drink; or have a designated driver (your spouse is the ideal one, right?). I would like to remind you dear parishioners that when you begin your Christmas list, don t forget Charity begins at home. Below are many ways of giving (instead of to the IRS) to those who really need it. Remember the blessings given to you by God this year: 1. Our children in St. Martha School. Our children are truly our future; support tuition for the poor pupils - be a School Angel! 2. Caritas and St. Vincent DePaul. 3. Catholic Charities Bethesda House and St. Martha Day Care. 4. St. Martha s Pallottine Fathers and Brothers who serve you. 5. St. Mary Academy for children with special needs. 6. Cardinal Mooney High School. The deadline for the 2016 Catholic Faith Appeal is January 6, If you have not finished your pledge commitment, you can do so until January. As of 11/20/16, we have reached 92% of our goal of $343,000. Remember, St. Martha receives 100% of all money over our goal! This can help our parish tremendously, and thank you for your generous contributions to the Catholic Faith Appeal. The Holidays are an extremely busy time for everyone, especially our priests and religious. If you would like to make an appointment with one of our dear priests, please call our church receptionists to leave a message for your favorite priest. Each priest makes his own appointments. Next week we will have the annual collection to support elderly religious. A parishioner writes, As a Catholic school student from grades K-12, I was formed to be the person I am by many religious brothers and sisters, and I am forever grateful. Show your appreciation for the senior Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests who made a positive difference in so many lives. Please give generously to next week s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry Deacons Bill and Patrick; plus Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence and Sisters Cathy & Marianne Prayer Line:

4 BULLETIN The joy of Jesus' birth, as St. Pope John Paul II wrote in "Evangelium Vitae," is reflected in the joy at the birth of every child. Advent is a perfect time to develop a habit of prayer for all who carry a child, and who may be tempted by fear or a lack of trust in God's providence. JUAN DIEGO NOVEMBER 30 On December 9, 1531, a native Mexican named Juan Diego rose before dawn to walk fifteen miles to daily Mass in what is now Mexico City. Juan lived a simple life as a weaver, farmer, and laborer. That morning, as Juan passed Tepeyac Hill, he heard music and saw a glowing cloud encircled by a rainbow. A woman's voice called him to the top of the hill. There he saw a beautiful young woman dressed like an Aztec princess. She said she was the Virgin Mary and asked Juan to tell the bishop to build a church on that site. She said, "I vividly desire that a church be built on this site, so that in it I can be present and give my love, compassion, help, and defense, for I am your most devoted mother... to hear your laments and to remedy all your miseries, pains, and sufferings." Catholic Online THE LEGION OF MARY IS LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS The St. Martha Praesidium of The Legion of Mary meets every Saturday at 9:15 a.m. in the Office Conference Room. Charles Coury, CSSR Christ Be My Light is the general theme for our St. Martha Parish Mission scheduled for Monday, January 16, through Wednesday, January 18. The Mission will be led by Redemptorist Father Charles Coury, who will also speak at all Masses on the prior weekend. The Mission will begin each evening with our regular 5:30 p.m. Mass in the church. Fr. Coury has announced the themes for each evening: Monday Our Blessed Mother, celebrated within the Feast of the Annunciation. All participants will be invited to bring a symbol of their devotion to the Blessed Mother which they will place on the altar for a blessing with holy water and sacred relics. Tuesday Conversion. This evening all those in attendance will be invited to bring family pictures to the altar for another special blessing as a symbolic gesture of our prayers and petitions for those closest and dearest to us. Wednesday The Power of the Cross and the Healing that Pours Forth from It. All who attend will have an opportunity to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing (with the understanding that sickness is not only physical, but also mental, emotional, psychological, spiritual and intellectual). The Mission will end with a beautiful candlelight ceremony as everyone faces the Cross, the lights of the church are dimmed and together we sing Christ be My Light, Shine in My Darkness. Please join us as many evenings as you can to be inspired by our Mission leader and to receive some very special blessings. ALL ARE INVITED AND WELCOME!
5 Jesus sacrifice on the cross is nothing else than the culmination of the way he lived his entire life. -Pope Francis PEACE In our First Reading from the prophet Isaiah, he correctly foresees the coming of the Lord and he describes Him in this way: The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord. Of course, Isaiah is speaking of the coming of the Messiah, Isaiah implies and states that when the Messiah comes, He will bring peace, justice, and harmony. At the time Isaiah was writing he was attempting to give hope to the people in a time of distress. The traditional Advent theme last week is hope; this week it is peace, the peace we need to realize and embrace as we come to grips with the reality of the presence of Jesus and His saving grace. In a message to the American people when he was president in the 1920 s, Calvin Coolidge said during Advent: Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. If we think on these things, there will be born in us a Savior, and over us will shine a star sending its gleam of hope to the world. That is what our Advent journeys are all about to seek peace and to practice mercy. If we can do that, and we need to work at that, the Lord will live in our hearts, and we, too, can be better disciples. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. S. P. A A ST. MARTHA CLERGY AND STAFF Very Rev.
