2 JANUARY 8, 2017 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, We welcome today all of our beloved Circus people at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, presided by Bishop Frank Dewane! Today is the Feast of the Epiphany, which commemorates the finding of the newly-born Jesus by the three Magi Kings, according to the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, who quoted an Old Testament prophecy: A star shall advance from Jacob (Num 24:17). Actually, if we read carefully that chapter, we know that if the gifts brought to Jesus were three (Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh), we are not told the number of the Magi Kings, definitely there were more than two. In a Roman Catacomb the Magi are four. They were not Kings either but Magi, a term that indicated the astrologers of Persia (modern Iran). In those times, when astronomy as a science was in its infancy, and a great mixture of the Sacred and of the profane was common among the scientists, astrology was the science to predict the events of life. Because of their lack of optics and of true knowledge of the universe, those ancient astrologers mixed the little reality they could grasp with fanciful superstitious beliefs. Among them, for example, was the belief that a bright star, or a comet, or a shooting star would appear whenever a King was born. Those astrologers followed such a star/comet which kind of disappeared near Jerusalem, where they inquired about the new born King. Then, the star reappeared to stop over Bethlehem. The meaning of the Epiphany, a Greek word which means roughly to show, to appear, to reveal, goes far beyond the magi and the star. It signifies, first of all, that Jesus came to save not just the Jews, but also the Gentiles. That is why the Eastern Churches celebrate Christmas at the Epiphany, and not on Christmas day. In Southern Europe, the gifts under the Christmas tree are opened on the Epiphany. We are still at war in this New Year 2017, let us look forward to peace and to a better economic future, and a safe life for our children and grandchildren. The Greatest Generation of World War II gave us an unprecedented prosperity and freedom from Nazi domination. The brave soldiers in Korea and in Vietnam (even though betrayed at home) caused the collapse of Communist domination. The war on terror (as the war on the Anarchists of more than a century ago) will eventually make the world a safer place to be, provided that:...we eliminate all remaining official obstacles and social barriers against those yearning to actualize their freedom, not just African-Americans, but every American... We also display confidence in the essential goodness of our neighbors. When we are at our very best, we even treat our enemies with respect. We strive for justice rather than vengeance, reconciliation rather than retaliation... Indeed, Americans are generous in lending assistance, not only to each other, but to the peoples of the world. As the world s only superpower, we can be a bit intimidating, prompting people who do not know us to feel ambivalent, even distrustful or suspicious of us. Their anxiety may be understandable, since we are not perfect and our power allows for our errors to cast long shadows. Although we cannot claim perfection, we can claim greatness. We can boast of a distinguished record of aid throughout the world. It is because of America that common people throughout the world, even in Russia, now have a voice in their governments. It is partially because of America that the idea of basic human rights is so widely accepted in the world. Many beyond our shores owe their freedom to the responsible use of our influence... In 2001, the infernal heat of imploded planes and toppled towers changed us. May the tragic experience burn away our isolation and our complacency. May we react to the heat of hatred with a warmth of compassion for one another and for all those who suffer violence in our world. May the horrors of war refine us. May our struggle result in a new, stronger alloy of the American spirit. May our values and culture prove strong enough to brave the threat of terrorism. In the face of fear and unrest throughout the world, may our values, our convictions and our energies bring forth a security and stability for ourselves and for all people of good will. May we witness a Pax Americana. (Bishop John J. Nevins, first bishop of Venice). We would like to invite you to our annual Unity Mass on Saturday, January 21 at 5:30 p.m. Come and join us to fulfill Jesus prayer that all His children be one, As you Father and I are one ; and join us for a reception in the Fausto Hall following the Mass. Dewane, and all proceeds from the event will support the programs of Catholic Charities in Sarasota and Manatee counties. For more information call Catholic Charities at or visit their website Fr. Charles Gerard Coury, CSSR Father Charles Gerard Coury, CSSR, is a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, better known as the Redemptorist Missionaries. A native of Pittsburgh, he began seminary training at age 16 and was ordained in Two years later, he was sent to Brazil to serve with other Redemptorist missionaries and served there for over 26 years. While working in multiple parishes of immense territory and then as a director of Seminarians, Fr. Coury was sent to Rome for higher studies in spiritual theology and returned to Brazil after 4 years, undertaking anew his missionary activities in parishes and offering retreats and courses to seminarians, priests, sisters, as well as laity. In 2004, his General Superior asked him to minister in Beirut, Lebanon. To prepare for that assignment, he once again went to Rome and studied the religion of Islam for four years at a Pontifical University established to promote a dialogue between Christianity and Islam. Subsequently, Fr. Coury served almost five years in Beirut as chaplain to St. Mother Theresa s nuns, who ministered to the abandoned elderly and unwanted children with birth defects. He also was a spiritual director to youth, including both Christian and Muslim students. Shortly after returning to the U.S. in 2013, he was sent to Guadalajara, Mexico, to learn Spanish. He now resides at the Parish of Most Holy Redeemer in Manhattan, NY, where he is on call as an itinerant missionary preacher for parish missions, retreats, novenas, conferences, etc. Welcome to Sarasota and St. Martha Father Coury! 4 BULLETIN PASTOR For our New Year's resolutions, let's consider: How can I make a change, even a little one, away from society's "culture of death"? Will I speak up when God puts me in a position to defend innocent life, whatever the age? Will I volunteer some time for the cause of life? Will I participate in the Prayer Vigil for life on Friday mornings in front of Sarasota Planned Parenthood? Will I hold my elected representatives accountable for life? Will I call or write them? Will I write a letter to the editor when I see a "culture of death" article or letter? Is there enough evidence to show God that I'm a true follower? Am I a spectator, or a doer? A Message from our Bishop Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Diocese of Venice is blessed with many generous and dedicated priests who have followed Christ's call to act in His person in the priesthood. The Diocese is further blessed with vocations to the priesthood, evidenced by our present number of 21 seminarians. Your support of the Annual Seminary Collection continues to be crucial as challenges increase for a proper formation environment and education of our future priests. This special collection ensures that we continue to have good priests to serve you and your family. It supports the Church's mission of cultivating and fostering priestly vocations, and supporting the next generation of diocesan priests in their studies. Further, this collection supports our seminarians who are studying at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in nearby Boynton Beach. Funds are needed to assist our future priests with tuition, room and board, health care, transportation, and other expenses, including inviting more men to consider the priesthood. Your gift to the Seminarian Collection helps offset these costs. Parishes in the Diocese of Venice will conduct this annual collection for Seminary Support the weekend of January 7 and 8, Your gift provides vital financial support of the Seminary for the future of the Church in Florida. I take this opportunity to extend to each of you my blessings in this New Year. Thank you and may God bless you and your family for the support of our seminarians. Sincerely yours in Christ, + Bishop Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD JANUARY 9 The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord marks the beginning of what is called the public ministry of Jesus. The Baptism of Jesus manifests the life of the Holy Trinity to the whole world and opens the door, through Jesus Christ, into a communion, a participation in the life of the Trinity, through Baptism into His Body, the Church. Just as the Spirit hovered over the waters of the original creation, the Spirit hovers over the waters where the Son is immersed by John. The Theophany, or Baptism of the Lord, also reminds us that all of creation will be redeemed! We profess in our ancient creed that we will await the resurrection of our bodies and our life in a world to come. Catholic Online Daily Prayer to Guardian Angel Angel of God, my guardian dear To whom His love commits me here Ever this day be at my side To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Very Rev. Fausto Stampiglia, S.A.C. Pastor Rev. R. The word epiphany comes from the Greek epiphainen, a verb that means to shine upon, to manifest, or to make known. What the Church celebrates today is the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ to the whole world; after being made known to the shepherds of Bethlehem, He is revealed to the Magi who have come from the East to adore Him. The Epiphany should be and is a great Feast for us. The joy we felt at the birth of Christ on Christmas must be renewed today (and every day for that matter). In a sense this is a second Christmas Day as it puts the Lord in a new light. This day manifests the divinity of Jesus. At Christmas it was a few shepherds who were invited by the Angels to go and witness and recognize the Lord. However, today, at the Epiphany, the voice of God calls the whole world, each and every one of us, to adore Jesus, and to hear Him. The Epiphany or the realization of the divinity and saving grace of the Lord should lead us as individuals to a personal epiphany. In a sense an epiphany is representative of conversion, conversion to the truth. If we accept Christ as our Savior and if we truly strive to live our lives as His disciple, we begin to pursue lives of stewardship, lives of love and service. Today of all days should help us in that realization and in that goal. Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc. MARRIAGE BANNS Sean McLaughlin & Charlotte Bickford (2)
