2 NOVEMBER 5, 2017 PSALTER WEEK III From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Today s Gospel indicates to us how our superiors, either political or religious, should conduct themselves in governing the citizens entrusted to their cure. 1. Do not overburden people with heavy taxes and rules which the politicians will not touch with a finger. Also, a warning is given to all Christian leaders, clergy, or lawgivers to share the burden of life with equanimity and justice. 2. Avoid the temptation of power and pride in looking right and left for adulation and subjugation. 3. Avoid hypocrisy, trying to look honest (or holy in the case of clergy) and blameless in the eyes of deceived people, but not in the eyes of God. We have some good news. The Pallotine superior in Poland has assigned Fr. Jan Rykala, S.A.C. as a new associate pastor here at St. Martha and the Bishop has given him the faculties to take care of our spiritual needs. Fr. Jan was born on June 4, 1961 in the small village of Cykarzew Polnocny, Poland, 12 miles outside of Czestochowa, which is known for the Paulite Monastery of Jasna Góra, home of the Black Madonna painting. His parents were Stanislava and Mieczyslav Rykala and he was last of four children with two sisters and one brother. He decided to study geology at the University of Wroclav in the southwestern part of Poland and after receiving a master s degree, started work as a geologist at the National Geological Institute. Through involvement with the local parish, Fr. Jan started to consider the possibility of becoming a missionary and found a great love for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the people. He decided to leave the National Geological Institute and start his novitiate with the Society of Catholic Apostolate (Pallotines). When asked at the end of his studies at the seminary where he would like to work, the answer was Papua New Guinea. On May 9, 1992 he was ordained a priest and then continued studies in Warsaw and Scotland to prepare him for his missionary work. When completed, it was finally time to start his missionary work in Papua New Guinea on November 1, 1994 where he spent 21 years. Fr. Jan definitely enjoys the warm weather and is looking forward to his stay and work here in Sarasota. We welcome him with joy and we pray for his good ministry for all of us here at St. Martha! This Saturday, November 11 is Veteran s Day. Please remember our brave men and women, living and deceased, who have sacrificed to keep us free. Pray for all Veterans and their families. Thursday marks the anniversary of the dedication of the cathedral church of Rome on land owned by the Laterani family by Pope St. Sylvester I (Dec. 31), Nov. 9, 324; honored as the episcopal seat of the pope as bishop of Rome; according to an inscription which Pope Clement XII (reigned ) placed on the façade, this basilica is the mother and head of all churches of Rome and the world ( omnium ecclesiarum Urbis et Orbis mater et caput ); residence of the popes from the 4th c. until their moving to Avignon (1309); site of five ecumenical councils; Pope Innocent X commissioned the present structure in 1646; beneath its high altar rests the remains of the small wooden table on which, according to tradition, St. Peter celebrated Mass; dedicated to the Savior, later to St. John the Baptist. Sometimes I love to share the questions about God or religion that our school children ask me when, every Friday, I visit them all in their classrooms: When Jesus said drink my blood, was it really blood? If God created Adam and Eve but evidence shows the first living creature evolved from the sea, was it Adam that evolved? Did Mary or Joseph go to school? Who were Jesus grandparents? When you were younger, did you think of becoming anything other than a priest? What happened after Jesus rose from the dead? What is your opinion on fidget spinners? Does Jesus have a body in heaven or is he just a spirit? Have you received all the sacraments except for anointing of the sick and matrimony? If you accidentally kill yourself, is it considered suicide? If it is, is it a sin? Why did God create Adam and Eve? Why did you get kicked of the basketball team? Was it because of your height or your skill level? How many words are in the bible? Can you tell us the story of your escape from Italy? What do you like more: to baptize or give communion? Why was Pontius Pilate a coward? In our faith we are not supposed to kill a life. If a woman is pregnant and the doctor said she would most likely die if she had the baby, what should she do? How big was the sea that Moses split? Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Jan, John & Jerry Deacons Bill and Patrick; plus Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence and Sisters Cathy & Marianne Family Dinner Hosted by Knights of Columbus Wednesday, November 15 at 6:00 p.m. Fr. After he was baptized, he felt that serving in the Roman army at that time was incompatible with being a Christian. When allowed to leave the army, he settled in Gaul (France) and founded the first monastery there. As bishop of Tours, he worked ceaselessly to spread the faith. An excellent administrator, he invented the division of dioceses into parishes. May we also live by the courage of our convictions when they clash with society. Living with Christ INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS FOR NOVEMBER 2017 That Christians in Asia, bearing witness to the Gospel in word and deed, may promote dialogue, peace, and mutual understanding, especially with those of other religions. 4 BULLETIN Since we all have one Father, we are brothers and sisters, and so our lives are entrusted to one another s care. We are responsible for each other before we choose to be. The abortions that others have are our business, because those children - as well as their parents - are also entrusted to our care, in the one family of God. Ours is the business of love, to care as much as we can for all our brothers and sisters. PASTOR pastor@stmartha.org PRAYER FOR VETERANS Help us, dear God, to see your face in every Veteran we encounter. Guide us as we imagine new ways to support Veterans and their families. Bring healing and peace to all who have been wounded physically, mentally and spiritually during wartime. Help us bring your saving grace to heal the invisible wounds of war. We ask this in Jesus holy name. Amen. Mayors Feed the Hungry Program Thanksgiving Food Drive November 6-17, 2017 Boxes will be placed in the Parish Office, Parish Hall and Church. Please help us fill the boxes with non-perishable food items. Mateo 23:11 EL MÁS GRANDE ENTRE NOSOTROS A quién admiras? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
