2 SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 PSALTER WEEK IV From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, How interesting are the differences between the Gospels of Mark and Matthew in this episode of Peter s confession of Jesus Divinity. Matthew extols Peter s unique call by Jesus to be the keeper of the keys of Jesus Church. Mark gives us a different Peter, one who after professing Jesus as the Messiah, tries very foolishly to tell God how to behave as God! And remember that Mark (whom Peter affectionately calls: My Son ) was a follower of Peter from Palestine to Rome, just after a brief missionary journey with Paul. I can picture Peter recounting his foolish talk to Jesus in private, only to see Jesus eyeing the disciples, calling for their attention and then strongly chastising Peter in their presence. The Gospel of Mark is heavily dependent on the preaching of Peter, and we can catch in this passage the shame felt by Peter at this moment, a shame that Mark faithfully portrayed. But from the shame came one of the most profound, although so troubling for us, lessons by Jesus: If we want to be His disciples, we must deny ourselves, put Jesus number one in our lives, take up the cross assigned to us, then follow Jesus on Calvary. Wow! In the Old Testament, the promise of the Lord to Israel was prosperity and material blessings, if the Israelites would keep the divine law, but in the New Testament it is the Cross. Paradoxically, if we are poor and lacking material blessings, we should consider ourselves blessed by God; do you remember the Beatitudes? It is the great mystery of the suffering servant and of the plan God has prepared for us: we will save ourselves for all eternity if we embrace the crosses prepared for us. And now you, dear parishioners, can appreciate the nuns and monks vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, as signs of their faith in the future eternal life. The first reading gives us a prophecy by the Prophet Isaiah of the suffering servant, in whom Jesus passion is represented many hundreds of years before Jesus birth. Another glimpse of the suffering servant is in the responsorial psalm; the cry of the psalmist: O Lord, My God, Deliver Me! will echo in Jesus cry My God, My God, Why Have You Abandoned Me? So, my dear friends, even among the tears and tragedies of life, let us always remember the suffering servant and say with Peter: Let us go with Jesus and let us die with Him! Because if we live and die with Jesus, then we will rise with Him. And, by the way, in the present situation of the Church, I personally experience sadness for the victims of clerical abuse and, as you may imagine, deep shame. But I m not losing the inner joy of my forgiving and merciful Jesus. Pray for the victims and pray for us, your ministers, that we may not lose heart in serving you. I love you all. Today is the start of our Religious Education classes. Classes begin after the 9:00 a.m. Family Mass in Fausto Hall. It is not too late to register your child for these classes. Please say a prayer for the children, as well as the dedicated catechists! By the way, the Catholic schools in the Diocese of Venice are able to offer your children the most complete, well-rounded education based on faith, strong academics and a passion for Christian service. Let us help your children develop into intelligent, spiritual, respectful, compassionate, motivated, future leaders of our community and our church. Our schools are not cutting programs; they offer a fantastic core curriculum and deep biblical and Catholic formation. God has called home our 10 a.m. Mass head usher, Fred Scheerle. 5 It is necessary to trust in God s help. - Pope Francis St. Jude Parish: Columbia Restaurant's Annual Community Harvest program. During the entire month of September, guests at the St. Armand's Circle restaurant can check off a charity of their choice to receive 5% of the guest meal tab. Isaías 50:7 ESCUCHANDO Y RESPONDIENDO En las lecturas de hoy se entrecruzan tres temas: escuchar a Dios, la fe vs. las buenas obras y perder nuestra vida para poder salvarla. De qué manera están relacionados estos temas? En Isaías, el Siervo Sufriente padece muchos disgustos y burlas, pero puede soportarlos porque ha escuchado los mensajes de Dios día tras día. El salmo nos dice que Dios también escucha. Dios escucha nuestras súplicas y siempre está dispuesto a salvarnos. Cuando nuestra fe se profundiza, también se profundiza nuestro deseo de hacer obras de justicia y caridad que fortalecen el Reino de Dios. Dios guía nuestras acciones de maneras que muchas veces no podemos ver y no siempre vemos los resultados.
