2 AUGUST 19, 2018 PSALTER WEEK IV From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Today s Gospel presents us with the continuation of Jesus explanation of the Holy Sacrificial Banquet of the Mass. His assuring words call us to firmly believe in the Eucharistic miracle. It is beyond my comprehension to hear people saying that the Eucharist is a symbol, not a reality! I myself am the living bread, come down from heaven my flesh is real food this is the bread come down from heaven the bread I will give is my flesh. Some Protestant preachers say that Jesus teaching is the bread, but how can they say that when Jesus says, the bread I will give is my flesh! And, what is more amazing is the fact that they are stubbornly literal in interpreting the Bible, in such a way that they firmly believe that God created the world in exactly six solar days. But, when they report this passage of John, they try to find a meaning which is totally non-literal a symbolic food for thought! Actually, for the little I ve heard televangelists or fundamentalist teachers, I never heard them quoting this passage of John, or the other three evangelists on the subject of the Eucharist (or on Peter s primacy, or divorce ). We cannot pick and choose the God we like! We must accept God as He is, because His existence does not depend on our permission! If we close our eyes, we see just an empty darkness yes, it is true, but the world is there nonetheless! And so God is there, everywhere, except in our heads and hearts if we foolishly deny Him! We must accept God even if we cannot understand or comprehend His immensity; we must believe in Him, because once we believe, we will have eternal life. In receiving Holy Communion, we become one with Jesus here on earth, and then we will be one with Him in Heaven. Last Sunday, I explained the topic of Mass attendance on Sundays and Holy Days, and today I would like to touch on the matter of Mass Offerings. We Catholics know that no one can buy a Mass, or a Confession, or any other Sacrament, because they are free gifts of Jesus to us. In the matter of Mass Intentions, when Catholics (or even a non-catholic) ask that a Mass (scheduled or not) be exclusively celebrated for their special intention, they know that the Mass is not sold but it is free. For thousands of years, Catholics have offered - as gifts - candles, bread, wine and other goods to the Mass presider to help the priests and church expenses. It is also Catholic tradition that the priest has the obligation to celebrate Mass anyway, even without any gift, so that Catholics will not be deprived of receiving the infinite grace of Jesus sacrifice for themselves, or for their dear deceased loved ones. Recently I received irate letters from upset parishioners about the letter of the bishops about refugees, primarily the sermons of our beloved Holy Father Francis, insisting that free nations should give shelter to these refugees. I see unresolved problems in those letters of the parishioners, let me explain: 1. The Bishop of Rome (pope) and the body of Catholic bishops as a unity, have the obligation to teach Jesus faith to us. Sometimes we Catholics find a conflict between what we consider right in our mind and the bishops teaching. That is when the role of an informed conscience comes into action. 2. Infallible biblical and dogmatic truths must be accepted even if we do not like or find them incredible. Just remember that some biblical and dogmatic teachings do change in formulation but not in the essence of the truth itself. The Trinity of God is an example. The magisterium can express itself infallibly on truths that are necessarily connected with what has been formally revealed. 3. The ordinary magisterium of the bishops, first of all the Bishop of Rome, is the total sum of what we believe in the day to day practice of our faith and naturally we follow these precepts and laws. Infallibility does not only pertain to solemn pronouncements of a council or of the supreme pontiff when he speaks ex cathedra, but also to the universal and ordinary teaching of bishops dispersed throughout the world when they propose in communion among themselves and with the pope the Catholic doctrine to be held definitively. Here in certain laws we find a conflict sometimes between such magisterium and a present situation in our lives. Typical example is a mother with a sick baby, unable to find a babysitter on Sunday. Her conscience tells her that she can stay home, even missing the obligation of attending Mass. 4. Every bishop can also express convictions or ideas as any human being. In this case, if we disagree with such ideas, we respectfully can follow our own brain. Which is a better team: Green Bay Packers or the Patriots? Our bishop comes from Wisconsin...should I say more? 5. Practical decisions are taken by our church leaders and by our civil authority. Jesus said to give to Cesar what is Cesar s, and to God what is God s. Our great nation is a splendid example of free churches in a free republic. Not all laws reflect God, actually some laws are against God, think of abortion. Nonetheless, we must be good citizens, avoiding following bad laws and working and voting to change them peacefully. 6. In the matter of the acceptance of refugees, I wish all of us would meditate the words of our Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis, expressed to the press coming back from the Ecumenical Meeting of Geneva last month: I have spoken a great deal about refugees, and the criteria in what I have said: welcome, protect, promote, integrate. They are criteria for all refugees. Then I have said that every country must do this with the virtue of government, which is prudence, because a country must welcome as many refugees as it can integrate: integrate, that is educate, provide work. This I would say, is the calm, peaceful plan for refugees. By the way, the pope added, There is the problem of trafficking migrants.traffickers immediately separate women from men: women and children go God knows where. This is what traffickers do. Origins, July 18, 2018, Volume 48 Number 11. This plague (trafficking in persons) reduces many men, women and children to slavery for the purposes of labour and sexual exploitation, trade in organs, mendicancy and forced delinquency.
