2 MARCH 12, 2017 From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Are we keeping up our Lenten resolutions to increase your prayer time and to do penance? Are we getting ready to celebrate Holy Week and to renew our commitment to Jesus when, at Easter, we will have the renewal of our Baptism promises? Let us not get discouraged when we fail to keep promises made to Jesus: after all, we are sinners! Let us start anew to renew our commitment to Jesus; the past is past, what we have is the present, let us live it fully with Jesus. Love and understanding are gifts that another person freely gives to us. True love is unconditional. We depend on other people s love from birth and all through our lifetime. The experience of being loved helps us to establish patterns of responding to others with love. As Christians, one way we experience God s faithful love, goodness and mercy is in the all-embracing God received in the Eucharist, and in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. God s mercy, expressed in the death of Jesus, helps us to see the greatness of God s love and God s willingness to forgive our sin. It is almost too good to believe! We are led to respond with a deep sense of joy and wonder. As St. Augustine prayed: Our hearts were made for You and they shall not rest until they rest in You. That is why we renew ourselves so often in life, and that is why every year Our Mother Church calls us to renew ourselves in the Holy Season of Lent, so that, after our death, we will reach Paradise, smiling at the Risen Lord in His Glory as the three lucky apostles (Peter, James and John) looked astonished on Him, on that fabulous day of Transfiguration. Whenever we get discouraged or depressed, remember the Transfiguration and the Resurrection of Jesus, and let s plow ahead toward Jesus through the cold indifference and hostility of the Godless world. I suspect that with His Transfiguration, Jesus wanted to teach the three pillars of His community to stand fast during His short Passion and the three-day burial, but it was a miserable failure. Peter, the head of the Apostles, denied Jesus, James and the rest of the twelve ran away from the Lord; only John saved the day, sticking up for Jesus, even under the cross, sustaining the Blessed Mother in that most tragic moment of her life. After all, John was related to the high priest. Let us follow the example of John, committing our souls to follow Jesus. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) members will undergo their First of three Scrutinies next Sunday, at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. The scrutinies are rites meant to uncover, then heal, all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect and then to bring out and strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. During the First Scrutiny, done the Third Sunday of Lent, the elect will be presented with the Creed, the statement of Catholic beliefs. Please pray for the candidates and their families. PSALTER WEEK II Our Catholic Faith Appeal goal for 2017 is $332,000 and, as of 2/27/17, we have pledges of $132,528. Wow! Thank you, thank you for this wonderful start. But, if you have not made your pledge, it is still very important you do so. St. Martha parish receives all of the over goal gifts for our own essential needs, and with no tax. Sometimes people ask: Where does the CFA money go? Your gift to the Catholic Faith Appeal directly impacts the lives of people from all walks of life, who seek spiritual nourishment or temporal services from the following: Catholic Charities Child and youth protection Support of missions/convents Outreach to the family, prisons, vocations, young adult, youth and college campus Office of Religious Life and Evangelization Haitian & Hispanic Ministries Respect Life Ministry Safe Environment Program Marriage Tribunal and marriage preparation Catholic Charities (Bethesda House, St. Martha Early Learning Center) Religious Education Permanent Diaconate OLPH Retreat Center Religious Life TV Mass for the homebound Stewardship & Development Administrative services of the Diocese Continuing education Peace and Social Justice Thank you to those who joined us at our Feast of Abraham celebration! In regard to our ancestors in the faith, the Israelites (now we commonly refer to them with noun, Jews, let us be clear about the church teaching. The majority of the Sanhedrin condemned Jesus as a blasphemer because, You, who are only a man, have made yourself God, and they thought sincerely that they were in line with the First Commandment. Jesus tried again and again to convince the leaders of the Sanhedrin of His Divinity: If you do not believe my word, believe in me because of the miracles I make search the Scriptures and you ll find out all about me Jesus was not believed by most members of the Sanhedrin who passed on the death penalty, an empty threat because only the Roman Army of occupation of Judea could condemn anyone to death. It was Pilate, the Roman Procurator of Judea, who, even as he recognized the absurdity to his pagan mind of the Sanhedrin decision, nonetheless condemned Jesus to death with a politically correct sentence, dictated by the scorn and hatred he felt for the chosen people of God. A Roman Centurion, an officer in charge of one hundred soldiers, executed the sentence of death. It does seem to me that the devil has employed every means of destruction and horror against the chosen people of God, from the expulsion from Rome of all Jews (Rabbinical and Christian) in the year 49 A.D. by the Emperor Claudius, to the Holocaust by the German Nazis, and from the terrorists attacks raining on Israel, to the
3 2nd Sunday of Lent anti-semitism of terrorist Muslims today. The same hatred by Satan and his disciples has followed us Christians (the new Israel) throughout the centuries, because of our Jewish Scriptures and origins: Salvation after all is from the Jews, St. Paul wrote! To be anti- Semitic is to be against Jesus, Mary - the most famous Jewish woman, actually the most venerated woman on earth - and all the first Christian martyrs! Let us ponder the prayer, that in the solemn Liturgy of Jesus death on Good Friday, the Catholic faithful implore God: Let us pray for the Jewish people, the first to hear the word of God, that they may continue to grow in the love of his name, and in faithfulness to his covenant: Almighty and eternal God, long ago you gave your promise to Abraham and his posterity. Listen to your Church as we pray that the people you first made your own, may arrive at the fullness of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Evidently, if you are late for Mass, you did not move your clocks ahead! This weekend is Daylight Saving Time, remember to move your clocks ahead one hour. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry Deacons Bill and Patrick; plus Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence and Sisters Cathy & Marianne BLOOD DONORS SAVE LIVES St. Martha Catholic Church Blood Drive TODAY, Sunday, March 12, :30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Church Parking Lot Earn points! -Redeem for valuable merchandise and gift cards online at J S C! He was kidnapped by pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave, but after six years he escaped, returned to Britain, and eventually became a priest. Pope Celestine sent him to evangelize the Irish. Although he was constantly at risk from hostile pagans, by the time of his death, a native clergy was in place and Christianity had reached nearly all of Ireland. Like him, may we see in our adversity an opportunity for witnessing to Christ. Living with Christ St. Patrick s Day Dispensation With St. Patrick's Day falling on a Friday (March 17) during the Lenten Season, Bishop Frank J. Dewane is granting a one-day dispensation of abstaining from meat on that Friday alone. The faithful are encouraged to choose another day in the same week to abstain from meat and to perform some other penance or work of charity on March 17 to assist in their spiritual Lenten journey. 4 BULLETIN PASTOR The penance of Lent helps us die to ourselves and receive new life in Jesus. May it strengthen our choices of life for the unborn, the handicapped and the elderly. Seven Deadly Sins/Seven Lively Virtues A Catholic Spiritual Study presented by Fr. Robert Barron Through Word On Fire Catholic Ministries Join us for a four part video series with Fr. (now Bishop) Robert Barron as he enlightens us in his study on sin and virtue. Over the course of this study we will be taking a look at what Catholic tradition calls the Seven Deadly Sins and contrasts them with the Seven Lively Virtues. Lent is a perfect time to assess and enhance our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ. Barron offers much spiritual guidance and relevant examples of how to live more fully our lives as Christians. The sessions include videos of Fr. Barron on each of the sins and virtues. There is ample time for study and discussion for the group. The facilitator is Dr. Elizabeth Johnston of St. Martha Parish. We will meet Mondays (March 20, 27 & April 3, 10) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and offer the same materials Tuesdays (March 21, 28 & April 4, 11) from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. Study materials will be provided. Existing members - bring a friend!
