2 NOVEMBER 9, 2014 Month of The Holy Souls FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica First Reading: Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9,12 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, Gospel: John 2:13-22 MASS INTENTIONS Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica About this feast St. John Lateran is one of the four major basilicas in Rome, with St. Peter, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. It is unique among the four since it (not St. Peter s) is the cathedral church of the Bishop of Rome, the pope. Lateran was the name of a Roman family whose lands were seized for the Church by the Emperor Constantine, and which then became the site of a great basilica dedicated in honor of John the Baptist. For centuries, the old Lateran palace was the residence of the popes. It was only when the popes returned from the Avignon exile in the 14th century that they took up residence at the Vatican. The basilica now has a triple dedication in honor of St. John the Baptist, St. John the Evangelist, and our Lord. Across the front of the basilica is a Latin inscription that says, This is the mother and head of all churches in the whole world. It is a reminder of why the dedication of this one church is celebrated by the universal Church: we are one family, one flock, and we are led by one shepherd, the successor of St. Peter. Fr. Not just how we are taking care of those gifts, but how we are sharing those gifts, including with the parish. This focus on Parish Stewardship over the coming weeks asks us to consider are we returning to the Lord a proper portion of the gifts God has placed in our care, through the Lord s instrument on earth, our Church for the building up of the kingdom. We are asking each of our parishioners to take some time this week to begin to prayerfully consider how God is calling you to be a good steward of your parish. November 12 Mass will be offered at 11:00am for the deceased members of the guild. Brown bag lunch will follow in the parish center. Coffee, tea and dessert will be provided by the hostesses. All women of the parish are welcome to attend. Lucia Guild Bake Sale and Crafts Fair will be held November 22 & 23 after all the Masses. Please stop by and pick up some Thanksgiving goodies or some early Christmas gifts. Please remember to return your Advent Wreath base from last year so we can reuse them again this year. There is a box in the parish center to collect the wreath bases. Thank you!

4 NOVEMBER 9, 2014 Page 3 OUR LADY OF FATIMA SCHOOL NEWS The Visiting Committee for accreditation was here this week in the midst of their assessment. The final report was presented to us on Friday. All of the materials we compiled for this process, including the Self Study document, will be available to any one who'd like to review it. Please call Michele in the school office to set up some time. Classes will not be held this Tuesday, on the occasion of Veterans Day. We honor those who have served our country, many of whom are related to our students. This year's Speech Team will gather for the OLF qualifying tournament this week. Thank you to all the parents and coaches involved in helping our 7th and 8th graders with the lifelong gift of being comfortable with public speaking! 5 PARISH NEWS 2014 MAGI PROJECT The goal of the Magi Project is to Make A Godly Impact on the lives of those in need this Christmas season. The people we want to help are needy families, elderly or infirm individuals, previously homeless women and children or families living with disabilities. Their requests come to us from several charitable organizations in the Seattle area. This year our parish is committed to helping 55 families. Gift tags with information about the requested items for each individual will be placed on Jesse Trees in the Parish Center starting on Nov. 22 nd. To help sponsor these families, please choose one or more gift tags and purchase the item listed on that gift tag. It is important to return the item WITH its gift tag attached and by the deadline listed on the back of the gift tag to ensure that your recipient will receive their item. Our Lady of Fatima families can also choose to sponsor an entire family s list of gift tags.
