3 Liturgy Weekly Reflections 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time C June What the disciples answer was the general perception about who Jesus is John, Elijah, a prophet was in sharp contrast to Peter s confession of Jesus as The Christ of God. What Peter doesn t know at this point, however, is that the Messiah is One who must suffer, be rejected, be killed, and be raised up. What Peter also doesn t know is that Jesus revelation about his identity is a direct challenge to the identity of the disciples: to follow Jesus is to deny oneself and take up the cross daily. How many of us seeking to make our mark in life would expect that we find our place in the world only by giving up our life? Yet this is the only way for disciples of Jesus to become who they are meant to be and make a difference. By asking his disciples who they thought he was, Jesus used the opportunity to reveal his mission to them: to be rejected, to die and to rise. Do you think the disciples understood what Jesus meant at the time? What did he say they had to do if they were going to follow him? The challenge of the gospel is that to answer who Jesus is, is to answer who his followers are. How do we answer who Jesus is? Are there any implications for you if you know who Christ is and what his mission is about? Next Week s Readings June 30, 2013 ~ 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C First reading: 1 Kings 19:16b, Elisha left everything to inherit Elijah s prophetic role. Psalm 16 You are my inheritance, O Lord. Second Reading Galatians 5:1, A proper use of freedom includes service to others, motivated by love. Gospel Luke 9:51-62 Jesus expects us to leave everything to follow him. Jesus message for us in today s Gospel is a strong one. Following up on last week s message concerning the cost of discipleship, Jesus is here shown expecting his followers to have a singleness of purpose that not even Elisha had in today s first reading. How can we be prepared to give up so much to follow Jesus? Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. All are invited. Unless otherwise noted, all Masses are on Saturday mornings at 10:30 am. Holyrood~205 NE 2005th St Shoreline, WA July 6, 2013 August No Mass Calvary ~ th Ave NE Seattle, WA July 3, 2013 August No Mass
4 Parish Life We are in need of Sacristans, especially for 5pm and 8:30 masses. This is a beautiful ministry. The sacristans set the table for the feast. You will receive step by step training and guidance as you learn. If you would like to know more about this ministry, please call Jan Volk Your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal is still needed! Thank you to all who have responded to the needs of our Church in Western Washington through the 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal. One person or parish could not possibly accomplish all that needs to be done for over 60 ministries and services of the Annual Catholic Appeal. Your gift, no matter the amount, WILL MAKE a difference! It is not too late to return your pledge envelope if you haven t already done so imagine what can be accomplished if we all give; imagine what can be accomplished if you give. Please go online today to donate: For all you folks who renew the tags on their cars! If you have the option of getting free bus passes and don t need them, please send them to the parish office. We always can use bus passes for the folks who stop by needing assistance. Thank you! Rachel s Corner Hope and Healing After Abortion I experienced a great inner healing as a result of attending a Rachel s Vineyard retreat. It is a wonderful way to forgive yourself, find the unconditional love of Christ and grieve the loss of your little child. -Testimonial from retreat Next retreat: August 2-4, 2013 Call Valerie: HOPE (4673) You are loved with an everlasting Love! Project Rachel is a program of Catholic Community Services. Golden Fellowship Potluck Our monthly potluck is coming up! Thursday, June 27~11:30am to 1pm. Lunch begins at noon! St John the Evangelist now offers a mobile version of our online giving page to make it easy for you to give anytime from your smart phone. Simply scan the image you see here using your phone s QR code reader or go to : and locate the online giving page. Or you can donate enter: on your web browser. Worried that you won't have anything to put in the basket when it comes around on Sunday if you give online? We have placed laminated cards in the pews that say " I give electronically." Just drop one in the basket as it passes by. Missionary to the lepers of Molokai January 23, 1838 ~August 9, 1918 St. Marianne Cope was a born leader. Growing up as one of the older children of a large family, she went to work in a factory right after finishing eighth grade. She joined the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis a few years later, and began a whirlwind of leadership roles: twice as the novice mistress of her congregation, three times as the superior of St. Joseph s Hospital in Syracuse. This leadership, coupled with her sympathy for mankind in general, led her to volunteer to go to Hawaii to take care of the lepers. She was finally stationed in Molokai, where she brought education and happiness to the leper colony: even providing bright scarves and pretty dresses for the women. Do you have a family member or neighbor in or from our parish who would like to stay in touch with the St. John community? We would like to expand our Ministry to the homebound. In addition to taking Communion to these people we would like to reach out with a phone call or greeting card to say hello and that we are thinking about them. We will also need volunteers. Please contact Loretta Fletcher or Marion Johnson if you would be interested, or if you know of someone who might enjoy this type of outreach.
