2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace October 9, 2016 Dear Parishioners, Our Lady of Peace is a church and shrine dedicated to the greater glory of God and the salva on of souls. If we stop and re-read this first line carefully, bit by bit, I hope that you are struck by what this means, the wonder and grandeur of the very first line of our mission statement! Our Lady of Peace is a Church,... it is a Shrine,... dedicated (i.e., consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary) to the greater glory of God,... and the salva on of souls. This week we will consider only the first part of it. When you read these words, I invite you to consider a sort of panorama view of Our Lady of Peace considering the past, the present and the future of Our Lady of Peace and what our Lord Jesus is invi ng us to do through Him, and with Him, and in Him. Our mission is one that directs our gaze towards something much bigger and greater than ourselves individually namely our Lord Jesus and the salva on of souls! The central presence of Jesus in the life of our church, and par cularly in our parish, helps to magnify our individual contribu ons, that may seem small and insignificant, and makes them far more meaningful and valuable than if they were offered alone. Our Lady of Peace is a Church The church is the universal sacrament of salva on and, in Christ, it is a sign and instrument of communion with God and the unity among all men.1 Therefore, it is the earthly reality through which Jesus Christ draws His people to Himself and it is His manifest desire that all people shall be saved.2 Being members of the Church incorporates us into the Mys cal Body of Christ, it is not an organiza on, nor a company, nor a poli cal system and therefore the Church nor its members can be understood in these ways. The church is Christ; and as such, says St. Augus ne, Christ preaches Christ. 3 We are Christocentric (Christ centered) and as a church, we all have the twofold task of personally deepening our rela onship with Christ and of leading others to Him. In this way, from the hours of prayer spent before the blessed sacrament in adora on, the rosaries and chaplets prayed, the novenas offered, the singing of the choir, the prepara on of the altar with flowers, to the person who comes in genuflec ng piously to light a candle, all of this, contributes to and is directed to the same end: God Himself and leading others to Him. This focus goes beyond ourselves and it something that must be passed along and shared with others our neighbors within Silicon Valley because our mission as a church is to bring those, who are made in His image and likeness, to a knowledge of the truth. In short, we want to give people the opportunity to say yes God. Our Lady of Peace is a Shrine To do this even be er and more effec vely, we offer this faithfully through Mary. For this reason, by God s grace and the faith of many, we are also a shrine. Following the spirit of St. Louis Marie Grignon de Monfort, we are assured that by travelling down Our Lady s Way we carry out our mission as a Church, a aining union with our Lord Jesus, in the smoothest, shortest, most perfect and surest way.4 It is a shrine, because this is where we need to be as her sons and daughters. Moreover, our shrine is built on prayer, it is sustained by prayer, and will be perpetuated and expanded by prayer. This is so, because she has asked us to do this, to pray the rosary. She asked this of St. Dominic, St. Bernade e in Lourdes, the three shepherd children of Fa ma, to pray the rosary. And so, we have given and con nue to give her these rosaries as acts of faith, confident that she will give us everything we need. As a Church and Shrine, we are devoted and dedicated to invi ng, welcoming, and leading souls to Jesus through Mary. It is not a program or a facility for mee ngs, but it is something far bigger it is a family that is sacramentally united to Jesus Christ and consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Last Pilgrimage Mass & Procession of 2016 It s time again to commemorate the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima.
