4 Together Let Us Cause God Joy Today is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Soul's Day) and also Vocation Awareness Week. Plus, if you re here on time, you remembered to set your clocks back and got an extra hour of sleep! The Responsorial Psalm is The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. (Psalm 231-3a, 3b-4,5,6) The Gospel from St. John tells us that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day. ON ONE OF OUR SCHOOL POSTERS: GREAT MESSAGE Happy moments: Praise God Difficult moments: Seek God Quiet moments: Worship God Painful moments: Trust God Every moment: Thank God We have so much to be thankful for, and we forget when everything is going our way, so let's pray for people who have very difficult and hard lives. I think you'll agree we are into busyness. However, our souls should be valued more than busyness. Idleness allows us time to figure out who we are and what we believe; by allowing us time to consider what is unjust and what we might do about it. Give the inner life its due. Busyness can be the enemy of intellectual life, of faith, of thought. Idleness is necessary to all these things. We need to fight this tendency to always be working. We need to reflect and find God in all things, for caring for the environment, and for spending time doing nothing, particularly with our children instead of scheduling quality time activities. We too need time to sit and dream. Jesus took time, and we should too. Thanks to our Women s Club for Hosting Hospitality Sunday! O Donnell Congratulations to Gerrie Szewczyk, our St. Ann s recipient of this year s Christifideles Award, presented to her last Sunday at Holy Name Cathedral at a ceremony officiated by Cardinal Francis George. The award annually provides each Pastor an opportunity to recognize and thank Catholic lay-people who demonstrate personal and ministerial renewal through participation in parish life. Gerrie is our head sacristan and does an amazing job ensuring every last detail is handled, not only for weekend Masses, but also during the complex liturgies of Holy Week. She has been an active parishioner for decades, including her membership in the St. Ann Women s Club, which she currently serves as president. Thank you for all your years of dedication to our St. Ann community, Gerrie! 4

6 November 1-2, 2014 Dear St. Ann Parish Family, 8 th Grade Prepares for Test Please pray for our 8 th Graders, who will take the ACT ASPIRE test on Tuesday, November 4. During the past three years, Archdiocesan students in grade 8 have taken the EXPLORE summative assessment, a product produced by ACT. (The ACT is the most widely administered college entrance exam in Illinois and is required for admission to state universities in Illinois.) The EXPLORE test allowed our schools to measure the effectiveness of students' academic experience and was often used to support placement decisions for high school. This year, the ASPIRE test replaces the EXPLORE test. The AS- PIRE test has been created by ACT and is aligned to its College and Career Readiness Standards. The test will be administered in one day, and students will complete tests in five key areas: English, math, reading, science and writing. One new element of the ASPIRE test is the writing component. Students will respond to a prompt that requires a written response in the persuasive/argumentative mode. The ASPIRE test is aligned to more rigorous academic standards that require students to respond to more complex questions. We look forward to the data the test will provide and are confident our St. Ann students will do well. Parent/Teacher Conferences This Thursday We welcome the opportunity to meet with our parents during Thursday s Parent/Teacher Conferences. Students in grades four through eight attend their conference as well. On Conference Day, we discuss a child s strengths as well as how a child can improve academically. We are God s masterpieces, yet we are all works in progress. While these conferences are mandatory, an optional conference is available in early March. We take great pride in communicating with our parents on an on-going basis, as our parents are our teachers partners in education. Pumpkin Decorating Last week, our kindergarten students, joined by their 8 th grade Buddies, decorated pumpkins for display in the school Narthex. One of the many things I m so proud of about our school is how our older students look out for our younger ones. It was very evident during pumpkin decorating. The partnership resulted in some pretty snazzy pumpkins and several smiles on both my big and little pumpkins. Holiday Wine Glass Painting Party A Perfect Pairing of Fun and Friends! Friday, November 14, 7:00 p.m. St. Ann Parish Hall Invite your friends and order your tickets now. $20 admission includes all the supplies you ll need to create a pair of painted holiday wine glasses, perfect for gift giving or decorating your own holiday table. Nancy O Neill of The Art Studio will be present with examples and to provide expert instruction. Additional glasses will be available for only $5.00 each, but they must be pre-ordered, so please register early. Guests are invited to bring their own favorite beverages and snacks to enjoy and share (wine is encouraged, of course!). FMI and to register, call Melissa Devon at or Lisa Ortiz at Pre-registration by November 10 is highly recommended. This is a 21 and older event. Christmas Giving Tree Christmas is the season of giving, and what better way to give to those less fortunate than to be a part of our Giving Tree Ministry event! Giving Trees will be on display in the Narthex after the November 22 & 23 Masses. Gift recipients will be available on a first come, first served basis. Ministry heads Amy Hollifield and Nancy Hammer ask that all parishioners who take a card from one of the trees please give their name, phone number and card number to them on the provided labels. Purchase your $20-25 gift (no gift cards please), and return it to the December 6 & 7. If you cannot get to the that weekend, please bring to the the week of December 1. Please note: Return your gift to the Church only on the weekend of December 6 and 7, and not before. The group setting helps participants find comfort, courage, and support from others who are also grieving. All sessions take place at the, and there are no fees. Finding My Way for adults will begin Thursday, November 6, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., with continuing sessions on November 20, December 4 & 18, and January 8. Finding My Way: Children s Edition will start on Wednesday, November 5, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. and continue for six additional weeks: November 12, 19 & 26 and December 3, 10 and 17.
