Yet, how much time and energy do we invest in working for that eternal kingdom?

3 A Message from: Sister Mary Alyce September November 25, 16, 2018 It s coming, ready or not! Christmas is one month from today. Already stores and homes are ablaze with lights and tinsel and sales as reminders of what is coming. Now that the turkey is all gone, I want to remind you again of the wonderful Advent program which I mentioned in last week s bulletin. Matthew Kelly, a noted Catholic author and speaker, has invited Saint Luke parishioners to have The Best Advent Ever through a free program that will help all of us to slow down and focus on what matters most during the busy holiday season. Each day of Advent, which begins on December 2, next Sunday, you ll receive short inspirational videos, practical tips on taking time for yourself during Advent and real life encouraging stories to help you focus on getting ready to celebrate your Best Christmas Ever. I followed the program last year during Advent and I can attest to its spiritual value in preparing me for Christmas. Sign up at AlmostChristmas. You won t be disappointed. What better way to start the season of Advent with your family than to enjoy Breakfast with Santa next Sunday after the 10:00 am Mass? Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, it is a great way to see friends and enjoy homemade breakfast food. Thank you, Knights, for providing this annual event! The Saint Luke Giving Tree is up in the church. In the past, the generosity of Saint Luke parishioners has provided Christmas gifts to children and families who would not otherwise celebrate. The children s/family s names on the tree are taken from the list compiled by Catholic Charities Regional Agency in Youngstown and from some of the families sponsored by The Social Concerns Committee of Saint Luke Parish. Wrapped gifts may be brought to church until Sunday, December 16. Please place gift cards in the collection basket or brought to the parish office during the week for safekeeping. Two Music events are on tap for Saint Luke during December. On Saturday, December 8 the Youngstown Area Community Band will perform a Christmas Concert in church at 5:45 p.m. The following Saturday, December 15, the Knights of Columbus are hosting a Music Concert featuring the Power of Praise Music Group and the Saint Luke Adult Choir who will provide music for listening and singing. Free will offerings will be taken both nights: Dec. 8 for the support of the Youngstown Area Community Concert Band; on Dec. 15 for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society of Saint Luke Parish. The annual Christmas Kolachi Bake starts on Monday, Nov. 26. I m personally, (well, sort of personally!) inviting any man or woman of any age, who is able to offer a few hours on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. of this week to stop by the parish kitchen to lend your hand to the effort. There are sitting and standing jobs available. Just like every other activity in the parish, we have been relying on the same folks for years. Now we need to add a few new kolachi crew members to the force. There is no need for you to come every day. Just pick a day and time and show up; the crew assures me there will be something for you to do. No experience in baking is necessary; just a willing spirit to help the parish. Bring a friend to add to the fun! This is a major fundraiser for the parish and you are invited to contribute your time to the effort. Until next time.. Sister Mary Alyce THANK YOU to our caterers, Campora Catering, for providing an outstanding meal last Saturday, (November 17th) at our annual SAINT LUKE PARISH GIVES THANKS dinner. Thank you, also, to those who helped set up the hall in the morning and sold 50/50 tickets that evening. Over 175 people attended this parish event.

4 COLLECTION REPORTS FOR... November 18, 2018 Due to holiday early bulletin deadlines the Collection Report or November 18th VISION The parish has been addressing maintenance problems as they arise in the parish hall, rectory, and church for years. Vision 20/20 will allow us to address many of these major needed repairs in a timely manner. This week we focus on the Parish Sign on South Avenue. The sign as depicted in the picture below is now approximately 25 years old. As you can see some of the information on it has been blacked out over the years and now with the new mass schedule, more information is incorrect. This project will allow us to have the two sign faces removed and returned to the shop that built it originally. They will fill the areas that have been painted over, re-make the sign with current information, repaint both sign faces and re-install the sign. This will give our church sign a new fresh look with all pertinent information up to date. If you have any questions please feel free to call Rick Clautti VISION 20/20 GOAL... $250, Look in next Sunday s bulletin for a full report including the number of pledges received to date, amount pledged, and amount of pledged money already received. Payments may be made through WeShare, however, it is still necessary to return your pledge card for accurate recording keeping in the parish office. THANK YOU to those who contributed to the Retirement Fund for the Religious. If you forgot your envelope this week please feel free to drop it in next Sunday s collection. Your support is greatly appreciated. FATHER is available to hear confessions after weekend Masses on the first weekend of the Month. You can also contact Father Keehner or Father Coulter at the phone number on the back of the bulletin to make an appointment for private confession. THIS IS KOLACHI BAKE WEEK: Orders can be picked up Wednesday-Friday from 9am-3pm and following weekend Masses on December 1st and 2nd. THE GIVING TREE, sponsored by Catholic Charities and the Saint Luke Social Concerns Committee, has been placed in the church. Please return your wrapped presents with the tags attached to the narthex by December 16th. If you are purchasing a gift card as a present for the giving tree please bring it to the parish office or leave it in the sacristy. Do not leave gift cards in the narthex. CHRISTMAS FLOWER OFFERING ENVELOPES: You can send in your Altar Decoration envelope at any time. Please keep the names limited to THREE. Names will appear in the December 23rd bulletin. You are asked to turn in your envelopes before December 17th. BINGO HELPERS NEEDED: We are very fortunate to have a successful BINGO game at Saint Luke. BINGO is played every Monday and Friday. It acts as an ongoing parish fundraiser and requires MANY helping hands. Volunteers are desperately needed to guarantee the continuation of this fundraiser. Call the parish office if you would be willing to lend a helping hand. We will gladly put you in contact with the proper person. WANTED: VOLUNTEERS ~ Looking for a few good women (or men!) to volunteer to answer the phone in the office for 2-3 hours on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Morning or afternoon shifts! You decide! Call MaryAnn at the parish office if you have a few hours to offer the church, either every week or every other week. 5 30th annual Once Upon a Christmas Craft Show at Ursuline Preschool & Kindergarten, 4300 Shields Rd., Canfield. Saturday, December 1, 9:00am-4:00pm. Over 100 vendors, 50/50 raffle (last year s take home was $1,600.00), a variety of theme basket raffles, other individual raffles and a holiday bake sale. Free admission and plenty of parking. St. Stephen Parish in Niles, as part of its ongoing 165th Anniversary year celebration, is sponsoring a mission entitled, The Loving Mercy of God. The mission will be presented by Fr. Brian Walker, O.P., from the Saint Pius V Dominican Community of Chicago, Illinois, at 7 p.m. Dec. 2, 3 and 4 in the church, 129 W. Park Ave., Niles. Admission is free. A free-will offering will be taken to benefit the Dominican men in formation and older friars. START A HOLIDAY TRADITION: The Sisters of Humility of Mary will be hosting their annual Nativity Display on December 2nd from 12-5pm at Villa Marie Conference Center, 225 Villa Marie Road, Villa Maria, PA. This display of hundreds of nativity sets from around the world is an annual tradition for the sisters and will also feature entertainment from musicians and choirs. Admission and parking are free. A meatloaf dinner will be held from 12-4pm on Sunday, December 2 at a cost of $10 for a large dinner and $7 for a small dinner; a spaghetti dinner will be held from 12-4pm on Sunday, December 9th at a cost of $8 for a large dinner and $5 for a small dinner. Children 4 and under eat free and take out is available. Take some time out of your busy schedule and experience the beauty of the nativity displays.
