4 Together Let Us Cause God Joy Today is Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, March 29, We start Holy Week with Holy Thursday and the washing of the feet, the Last Supper on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Saturday, where the RCIA candidates will join with us. Welcome our new members, Ashley Candiotti, Jasmine Candiotti, Alyssa Greely (all three Sacraments of Initiation) and Larina Branch (1st Communion and Confirmation). The RCIA team has enjoyed making this journey with all of you. We have been truly blessed in getting to know you and sharing our faith with you, as you shared with all of us. For those persons today who call us to take time for work and for play, to make time for love and praise, to create time for rest and the leisure necessary for creation, we lift up our hearts in thanks. 6 From the Pastor s Pen Dear Friends, Over the last year or more, one topic of discussion at almost every maintenance committee meeting has been the current Baptismal Font and the numerous major problems with its condition and operations. The problems include leaking within/under the concrete flooring of the where the plumbing is buried; deterioration of the font inner walls; failing pump, heater, filter and other mechanicals; increasing difficulty to maintain a proper chemical balance; increasing difficulty maintaining proper water levels due to leakage; and moisture emissions causing the steel support system within the to rust. These problems have resulted in significantly more time spent on maintenance patches and higher costs to safely maintain the font where possible. Some of the issues we are experiencing require the replacement of various mechanical and other parts; the parts are difficult to locate if they even exist anymore. Overall, the font and its mechanicals have become obsolete and there are no simple or inexpensive ways to address repairs and ongoing maintenance. One of the most costly repairs is the plumbing leak: a large portion of the concrete floor (from the font in to the mechanical room near the ramp door) would need to be opened just to locate and repair the leak. This would merely address the leaking issue and nothing more, and then the list goes on with all the other parts of the system that require repair or replacement. Couple that with the rusting of the steel support structure and we have some serious issues to be addressed. Over the last year or so, the maintenance committee and I have discussed an array of patch solutions that could get us by for a short time, but we need to be realistic and think longer term. The most cost-effective and long-term solution is to replace the font entirely. After consulting with the maintenance committee and my staff, we all agreed replacing the font was the best solution for us. We will not replace the font with another built-in, near-gradelevel submersion font. This decision was made with maintenance and safety concerns in mind. Since I arrived here, I ve been told numerous stories of people falling into the font; one case I witnessed during the Easter Vigil a few years ago. While the injuries may not have been severe, they could have been Our new font will be dedicated and blessed shortly, and the existing font will be repurposed. I want to assure you that this decision did not come about without prayerful consideration and consultation, and it was not an easy decision to make. I thank you for your continued support. Fr.
