4 Together Let Us Cause God Joy Today is December 4 and the Second Sunday of Advent. The Responsorial Psalm is, Justice shall flourish in His time and fullness of peace forever. (Psalm 72:1-2,7-8,12-13,17) This week is also the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Thursday December 8, a Holy Day of Obligation. The Responsorial Psalm is Sing to the Lord, a new song, for He has done marvelous deeds. (Psalm 98, 1,2,-3ab, 3cd-4) SHOES TOUCHING MINE (Author Unknown) I showered and shaved, I adjusted my tie. I got there and sat in a pew just in time. Bowing my head in prayer, as I closed my eyes, I saw the shoe of the man next to me touching my own. I sighed. With plenty of room on either side, I thought, Why must our soles touch? It bothered me, his shoe touching mine. But it didn t bother him much. A prayer began: Our Father. I thought, This man with the shoes, has no pride. They re dusty, worn, and scratched. Even worse, there are holes on the side! Thank You for blessings, the prayer went on. The shoe man said a quiet Amen. I tried to focus on the prayer but my thoughts were on his shoes again. Aren t we supposed to look our best when walking through that door? Well, this certainly isn t it, I thought, glancing toward the floor. Then the prayer was ended and the songs of praise began. The shoe man was certainly loud, sounding proud as he sang. His voice lifted the rafters. His hands were raised high. The Lord could surely hear the shoe man s voice from the sky. It was time for the offering and what I threw in was steep. I watched as the shoe man reached into his pockets so deep. I saw what was pulled out, what the shoe man put in. Then I heard a soft clink as when silver hits tin. The sermon really bored me to tears, and that s no lie. It was the same for the shoe man, for tears fell from his eyes. At the end of the service, as is the custom here, We must greet new visitors and show them all good cheer. But I felt moved somehow and wanted to meet the shoe man. So after the closing prayer I reached over and shook his hand. He was old, his skin was dark, and his hair was truly a mess. But I thanked him for coming, for being our guest. He said, My name s Charlie; I m glad to meet you, my friend. There were tears in his eyes but he had a large, wide grin. Let me explain, he said, wiping tears from his eyes. I ve been coming here for months and you re the first to say Hi. I know that my appearance is not like all the rest. But I really do try to always look my best. I always clean and polish my shoes before my very long walk. But by the time I get here they re dirty and dusty, like chalk. 4 Today s Readings First Reading He shall bring justice for the afflicted; the earth shall overflow with the knowledge of the LORD (Isaiah 11:1-10). They strive to enhance the experience of the liturgy for the parishioners. Lectors have the awesome task of proclaiming God s Word in such a way as to give meaning and understanding to it so that parishioners can incorporate it into their everyday lives, says Debbie Bona, Lector leader. Lectors also read our intercessions and announcements at Mass. These are also important tasks of the lector as they give a voice to the needs and prayer intentions of our Parish community, says Debbie. Lectors can indicate their availability and a preference of Mass times. They meet four times a year as a ministry, and new lectors must attend a training. Parishioners need to be high school aged or older to join this ministry. 6 December 4, 2016 Dear St. Ann Parish Family, Wishing Everyone a Blessed Advent During this season of lights, let s remember the true light, Our Lord, as we prepare for His Coming. We at St. Ann School are gathering in prayer around our Advent wreaths. In the spirit of giving, our 8 th Grade Student Council Executive Board members will join Father Bill and me on Thursday in delivering Christmas cookies to all the police and fire stations in Lansing on behalf of our school. Grade 5 Family Mass A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Valerie Hunter and her fifth graders for leading us in prayer at our 10:30 a.m. Mass today. Please join us right after the Family Mass for the annual lighting of our Parish Christmas tree in the Narthex. Our students partnered this year (older grades with younger grades) to make their family ornaments during a recent religion class. There was a lot of giggling, glue, and glitter. Good times! Christmas Program Tuesday, December 6, 6:30 8:00 p.m. You are cordially invited to attend the children s Christmas Program on Tuesday night. Their energetic voices and contagious smiles are certain to put everyone in the Christmas spirit. Supper Club Thursday, December 15 Please take the night off from cooking and join us at Five Guys in Munster. Five Guys will donate 20% of your check to St. Ann s, and an additional $1 per milk shake. Supper Clubs are always tasty fundraisers! Thank you for your continued support of our parish school. A Night at The Palace Looking forward to our St. Ann fundraiser in March. A dinner dance (and more!) will be held on Saturday, March 4 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Dream Palace in Lynwood.
