4 From the Pastor s Pen Dear Friends, Wednesday, August 15, 2018 we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The feast is a Holy Day of Obligation. There will be a Vigil Mass at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 in the Chapel. Mass for the Feast Day on August 15 is at 9:00 a.m. in church. The Feast of the Assumption is not simply a feast of Our Lady, but a sign of the promise that lies before all of us who believe in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. As Jesus ascended to the Father, so too did Mary, a model of the Church. Where Christ has gone, we too hope to follow. Our Lady s assumption into heaven is a clear sign of what lies ahead of us! There are certain facts of Our Lady s life that the Bible teaches explicitly. Her virginal conception of Jesus, for example, is put forth clearly and unequivocally in Luke s Gospel (1:34-35). Other facts are implicit in the biblical text, but have always been taught by the church, such as Our Lady s assumption and her immaculate conception (celebrated on December 8). The truth of these implicit facts is no less important for our understanding of the Gospel. In fact, implicit details are often more important to a narrative, because they show us what the narrator takes for granted. While in the most Holy Virgin the Church has already reached that perfection whereby she is without spot or wrinkle, the followers of Christ still strive to increase in holiness by conquering sin. And so they turn their eyes to Mary who shines forth to the whole community of the elect as the model of virtues.... Seeking after the glory of Christ, the Church becomes more like her exalted Type, and continually progresses in faith, hope, and charity, seeking and doing the will of God in all things. (Vat. He makes reference to the Jews ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life a marvelous promise, but this reward is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. 6 Dear Friends, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer it s so hard to believe the start of school is just around the corner! While the children are on break, the school building has been a hive of activity, with all of the cleaning, painting, carpeting, and the construction of our new stage (thank you to Mickey Lomeli and his fellow Chicago Carpenters for that one!). We inherited some fun furniture and materials from a school that closed in the city and are excited about how the building is shaping up for For our parents and students who are preparing for the new year, school supply lists by grade are available on our new website under the Current Families tab >Important Forms and Information. We will hold our very first Back to School Mass and Book Bag Blessing on Sunday, August 19 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass and hope you will all plan to attend. Afterwards, we will head over to the school building together for a Teacher Meet and Greet and the opportunity to drop off school supplies and visit your new classrooms. We have many new staff members who are eager to become acquainted with their students and families, so here s your chance! The first day of school for Grades K-8 is Tuesday, August 21, and there will be an 11:30 a.m. dismissal that day. PreK will begin later that week, and we will be off and running! We do still have seats available at several grade levels if you or someone you know is interested in joining us at SAS. The renewable scholarships are still available for Religious Ed. transfer students ($750) and new middle schoolers ($500). And don t forget, our current families can earn $500 referral incentives for every new family they bring in! In order to be a volunteer, coach, Religious Ed. instructor, Scout leader, field trip chaperone, lunch room helper or serve in any other capacity with children present, you need to be Virtus trained and complete a background check with the Archdiocese. You will be assisting the priest in the celebration of the Eucharist, which is the cornerstone of your faith. It is no different than being on the basketball team, or any other hobby or activity that you participate in.
