4 St. Ann Parish Council Annual Second Collections Explained ONE CHURCH ONE MISSION Since the foundation of the, it has been the tradition of the Christian community to share goods because the believers were all one heart and mind. (Acts 4:32) One of the principal tasks of the Apostles in the early was to collect goods and redistribute them in an equitable way. In the same way today, our St. Ann parishioners donate from time to time to a very specific cause. The Catechism of the Catholic teaches, From the very beginning Christians have brought, along with the bread and wine for the Eucharist, gifts to share with those in need. This custom of the collection, ever appropriate, is inspired by the example of Christ who became poor to make us rich. WHAT ARE NATIONAL APPEALS OR COLLECTIONS? To assist parishes and dioceses in providing for an orderly and equitable sharing of the community s goods, the Holy See and United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) have identified key missionary priorities. These often result in special parish collections that take place on a national scale, known as Second Collections in all parishes around the Archdiocese. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THESE COLLECTIONS? Promoting the Gospel: Supports Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) & Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). CCHD & CCC promote the Gospel to those in poverty by providing grants to community-based groups, using an array of media tools. Clergy Health & Retirement Trust: Supports the retirement, medical, and financial needs of priests of the Archdiocese. Seminarians: Supports the formation and training of seminarians. Support of the Around the World: Supports evangelization and formation in underdeveloped areas of the world, given to Catholic Relief Services, in Latin America, in Africa, and in Central & Eastern Europe. Let s keep in mind that with the national collections, we are participating in an important work of the Universal. We are bearing witness to Christ s loving presence in the world and carrying forth the evangelizing mission proclaimed in the Gospel in a special way. To all our Parishioners at St. Ann: The Parish and The Committee on National Collections offers its deep gratitude to all those in dioceses and parishes who work so hard and with so much love to make the national collections a success year after year. Further information regarding collections will appear in the bulletin from time to time, so you will have all information pertaining to them. The next upcoming collection is March 10,2019: Collection for Aid to the in Central and Eastern Europe. An envelope has been provided for all parishioners of St. Ann with their monthly Sunday Offertory envelopes. You can also find extra envelopes in the Narthex. 4

6 St. Ann Dear Friends, What a busy time we are having! I hope everyone enjoys themselves at A Night at the Palace this weekend. Thank you so much to all of our dedicated volunteers who have spent countless hours to make this one a night to remember. Once we are past this event that has been taking so much time and attention, the rest of this school year is sure to fly by. The winner of our classroom contest in the Slam Dunk Hunger Out of Lansing Food Drive is 5th Grade! They will be receiving a visit from the SAS Candy Cart in the near future. Congratulations all, and thank you, thank you to everyone who donated. At press time, we haven t yet found out how we stacked up against the other Lansing schools. But even if we didn t win the overall contest, the true winner here is the Lansing Food Pantry. I m proud to know such generous students and families! Hope to see everyone at Schoop s on Tuesday for our annual Mardi Gras Supper Club. They are so generous with us, anyone who dines on our behalf at any time all day long will earn us back 15% of their bill. We have our monthly SIP day early dismissal at 1:30 that day, so why not head right over for an after-school snack? Don t forget your voucher. Supper Club Tuesday, March 5 St. Ann Supper Club is a monthly fundraiser in which local establishments return to us a percentage of all food purchases made by St. Ann community members and friends. Come in any time between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., turn in the St. Ann voucher when you pay, and our friends at Schoop s will donate back 15% of all St. Ann supporters dine in and carry-out purchases. Vouchers are in this week s bulletin and are on facebook and the school website. Please share with your friends! The response to our Practice Preschool in March has been overwhelming, and our initial session has already filled! However, we are still accepting applicants, and we will contact parents to let them know when we will be able to welcome their little ones. 7 Upcoming Events ASH WEDNESDAY IS MARCH 6, 2019 Palms from last year may be brought to church and placed in the baskets in the Narthex. The palms will be burned on Monday, March 4. Please do not bring any palms after Monday. The ashes will be used at the Masses and Services on Ash Wednesday. It helps to become involved with others who have experienced something similar. Sharing eases loneliness and allows an expression of grief in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding. Grief is a testament to the person who has left us. Love does not end, so we feel the loss for years to come. Coffee & Comfort is a place to share stories, to confide in others who truly understand, and to discover hope and healing. We meet on the first Monday of every month. Follow us on Exploring Priesthood Weekend March 15-17, 2019 This retreat is designed to help men discern God's call to the diocesan priesthood. Throughout a weekend of prayer, discussions, fraternity, recreation, and presentations from current faculty and seminarians, attendees will better understand God's movement in their hearts as they experience life on the Mundelein campus. You will have the chance to learn the steps for discernment, values of priestly life, and the structure of seminary formation. Current seminarians will share their vocation stories, and you will join them at Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, and the Liturgy of the Hours.
