4 Together Let Us Cause God Joy Today is the Fourth Sunday of Easter and the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. The Responsorial Psalm is We are His people, the sheep of His flock. (Psalm 100:1-2,3,5) Please continue to pray for vocations, as we are always in need of good and faith-filled young men and women to follow in Christ s steps. IS THE BIBLE THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD? By Jason and Ron Carlson During a question and answer session at a speaking engagement, a university student asked this question, Is the Bible the Inspired Word of God? In answering this question, I encouraged him to consider the following facts about the Bible. First, the Bible is not just a single book. Rather, the Bible is actually a collection of 66 books, which is called the Canon of Scriptures. These 66 books contain a variety of genres: history, poetry, prophecy, wisdom, literature, letters and apocalyptic, just to name a few. Second, these 66 books were written by 40 different authors, authors who came from a variety of backgrounds: shepherds, fishermen, doctors, kings, prophets and others. And most did not know each other personally. Third, these 66 books were written over a period of 1,500 years. Fourth, the 66 books of the Bible were written in three different languages. In the Bible we have books written in the ancient languages of Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic, a reflection of the historical and cultural circumstances in which each of these books were written. Also, they were written on three different continents: Africa, Asia and Europe. This shows the diversity of God s people. So think about the above realities: 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1,500 years, in three different languages, on three different continents. What s more, this collection of books shares a common story line: the creation, fall and redemption of God s people, God s universal love for all of humanity and a common message salvation is available to all who repent of their sins and commit to following God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength. In addition to sharing these commonalities, these 66 books contain no historical errors or contradictions. God s Word is truly an amazing collection of writings! Now I offer you a challenge. If you can find 66 books which match the characteristics of the 66 books in the Bible and are written by 40 different authors on three different continents over 1,500 years and in three different languages with a common storyline and a common theme, and a common message, with no historical errors or contradictions, then I will admit that the Bible is not the inspired Word of God. The student replied, That s impossible. How great is our God? I hope you found this article as informative as I did. Next week we celebrate Confirmation. Please keep our Confirmandi in your prayers. Members of the Greeters Ministry extend a warm welcome to everyone as they arrive for masses, promoting a friendly atmosphere in our St. Ann Parish community. Currently, this group seeks a new leader. Don Schiller heads the Ushers, who also greet our parishioners and guests at weekend, holiday and special masses. Additionally, ushers assist with seating, guide the flow of people during Communion, take up the monetary collection and distribute bulletins after masses. Some of our ushers are also trained in CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) facilitated by the Lansing Fire Department. These two ministries advance the philosophy that all are welcome at St. Ann Parish. If you are interested in becoming either a Greeter or an Usher, please call the Parish Office at

7 GOOD NEIGHBOR Day PARADE St. Ann Parish will once again participate in the Village of Lansing s annual Good Neighbor Day Parade! Saturday May 4, 2012 The parade is the perfect opportunity to show the community that the family of St. Ann s is a welcoming parish and has been for 100 YEARS! We are hoping many of you will come out and show your parish pride! We need volunteers to walk with us. You can wear any St. Ann gear: walk as a team in uniform, wear gym clothes, Catholic Schools Week T -Shirts, any Green & Gold will do! Everyone in the parade will receive a hot dog when we reach Lan-Oak Park. We will also need assistance decorating the float. We plan to decorate in the St. Ann parking lot on May 4 at 10:00 a.m. Anyone interested in donating bags of individually wrapped candy for distribution at the parade may leave their contributions at school, the parish office, or in the decorated box in the Narthex. If you send it through school, please mark it GOOD NEIGHBOR PARADE. You can even drop off your candy while we decorate the float that morning in the parking lot. The St. Ann float will be lined up on Wentworth Ave. Our line-up position is TBA watch for details. All walkers should be there between 1:30 and 1:45 on parade day. We would love to have all parishioners walking/riding with us. If you are unable to accompany your child, you will have to meet us when we arrive at 178 th St. across from the Eisenhower Center.
