4 Together Let Us Cause God Joy Today is the 14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time and 4 th of July weekend. Hope you have all enjoyed the fireworks somewhere. The Responsorial Psalm is, Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for His mercy. (Psalm 123: 1-2, 2, 3-4) The Gospel according to Mark 6:1-6 talks about Jesus first being welcomed, and then He was amazed at their lack of faith. REMIND US OF THE WAY WE WORD by: Richard Lederer, a linguist I am going to illuminate old expressions that have become obsolete because of the march of technology. These phrases include don't touch that dial, carbon copy, you sound like a broken record, and hung out to dry. Back in the olden days we had a lot o moxie. We'd straighten up and fly right. Heavens to Betsy! Gee whiskers, Jumping' Jehoshaphat! Holy moly! We were in like Flynn and living the life of Riley, and even a regular guy couldn't accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all the tea in China. Back in the good old days, life used to be swell. Swell has now gone the way of beehives, pageboys and the D.A.s, of spats, knickers, fedoras, poodle skirts, saddle shoes and pedal pushers. Oh, my aching back and Kilroy was here, but Elvis has left the building. Remember I'll be a monkey's uncle! or This is a fine kettle of fish! There were Mickey Mouse watches, hula hoops, skate keys, candy cigarettes, little wax bottles of colored sugar water, and an organ grinder's monkey, and last time I saw you you were knee high to a grasshopper. Fiddlesticks! You look like the wreck of the Hesperus. Cooties. Going like crazy. I'll see you in the funny papers. Don't take any wooden nickels. Heavens to Murgatroyd. And awa-a-ay we go! Think about Carter's little liver pills. We are now of a certain age and have been blessed to live in changing times. For a child each new word is like a shiny toy, a toy that has no age. We are at the end of the chronological arc, but we have the advantage of remembering there are words that once did not exist, and there are words that had their hour upon the earthy stage and now are heard no more, except in our collective memory. Share a few of these sayings with others and smile at them when they too remember them, or share them with your grandchildren, the little grasshoppers. God smiled and knew they were good. It helps to become involved with others who have experienced something similar. Sharing eases loneliness and allows an expression of grief in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding. Grief is a testament to the person who has left us. Love does not end, so we feel the loss for years to come. Coffee & Comfort is a place to share stories, to confide in others who truly understand, and to discover hope and healing. We meet on the first Monday of every month. If you re going to be away this summer, you can place your weekly envelopes in the Sunday collection or leave them at the Parish Office before you go or upon your return. Just remember that individual envelopes need to be in before the weekly drawings if you intend to participate. And if you have contributions to go to our Coins for Communication Drive, you may drop them off at the Parish Office during the week. Be sure to indicate which Mass time you want to credit with your donation there will be a special hospitality for the winning Mass at the end of the Drive. Lansing Council Raffle Tickets Sale July After Masses in the Narthex Our 60th Annual Council Raffle has begun, our main fundraiser for the year. With your help, we can raise funds to do more for those less fortunate than us. Each ticket is $20, and for every five tickets you purchase, your sixth will be FREE! The drawing will take place on August 15 at the annual Cheeseburger in Paradise Party. Don t wait until the last minute! We thank you for your support of the Knights.

6 St. Ann 2015 penny drive coins for communication Last summer, your generosity raised over $8,000 toward our snow plow debt, so we would like to challenge you to top that this time to make a nice dent in the $20k it will take for us to upgrade the St. Ann phone systems. Break open your piggy banks, dig into the couch cushions, dump out your change purses, look under the car floor mats, and empty your pockets of pennies. If you d like to unburden yourself of other larger coins (or bills, checks, etc.), we would be happy to have those as well! We will have receptacles in the Narthex for your donations, as well as a graphic to track our weekly progress. It might not seem like much, but one annoying little penny at a time can quickly add up to many helpful dollars if enough of us bring them in. pennies for perks How about some friendly competition to make our Penny Drive a little more interesting? We challenge regular attendees of each weekend Mass 4 p.m. Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. Sundays, and 10:30 a.m. Sundays to bring the equivalent of 300,000 pennies over the summer, which would total $3,000 per Mass. The Mass that brings in the most money in total will win a special hospitality at the conclusion of the Drive. The final results and the winning Mass will be announced at Frankfest in September. 7 Friday, July 24, 7-11pm Park Plaza Team St. Ann! We just ran the Techie Trot, now it's time to ride the LOOP! If we sign up as a team for the 3rd Annual Lansing on Pedals, July 24, we can take advantage of the group discount. This year both rides begin at 7:00 p.m. (Phase I is 6 miles--end your ride then, or stay on for Phase II, which is an additional 7 miles). Interested parties should print and fill out the registration form at and drop at the Parish Office with their checks made out to the Lansing Chamber of Commerce ($18 per person). We have applications in the office too. All applications in hand by July 15 will make up Team St. Ann! YOU RE INVITED! We hope everyone will join us at the St. Ann Parish Picnic on Sunday, July 26 after the 10:30 Mass. Along with games, refreshments, a piñata re-match, and bingo, the Picnic Team is planning a craft fair for parishioners to sell their wares. We are asking a contribution of $25 for each entry and that you bring your own table. You will receive $5 back in food coupons the day of the picnic. Come into the office to complete an application, or download one from our website and drop it off with payment. A LI L HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS... Join together with old friends and make a few new ones on the Picnic Team! We need the help of students looking for service hours or adults to assist with children s games (helpers over 17 must be Virtus trained for this one), concessions, ticket sales, and setup or clean up. We also need prize donations for our children s games such as bubbles, crayons, puzzles, coloring books, markers, Play Doh, and sidewalk chalk.
