BARNES Dear Parents, UPCOMING EVENTS NOV 6 8:45 am Mass Grs 7 & 8 NOV 10 FSA Mtg in Convent 7:00 pm NOV 11 Veterans Day NOV 13 1st Trimester Ends I hope many of you were able to enjoy the Heavenly Celebration of the Saints at Mass on Sunday. What a beautiful tribute for All Saints Day. Many of our school and Religious Education students participated in this impressive ceremony. Our children s choir and the adult choir joined together to sing sweetly like the angels in heaven. Thank you to everyone who helped to make our Halloween celebrations so much fun even though the weather did not co-operate for our little parade. We do have a lot of pictures available and you can check out the Photo Gallery on our website and enjoy them. Fun Food was exceptional. Our character word for this month is initiative. Don t forget the first Trimester will end on Friday, November 13th. Students should have completed all assignments by then. The Student Council is sponsoring a Turkey Drive for needy families again this year. Look for the flyer in this week s newsletter and please be generous. At the 10:00 am Mass on Sunday, November 8th we will honor All Service Men and Women, Past and Present. Please join us and keep them in your prayers.

3 5th Annual Progressive Holiday Mixer The St. Barnabas Men's Club is hosting its 5 th Annual Progressive Holiday Mixer on Friday, December 4 th at 6:30 pm sharp at the St. Barnabas Gym. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Ticket costs are $55 per person (payable to the St. Barnabas Men s Club) and include food, drinks and transportation. The proceeds go to the Family School Association s Teacher Gift Fund. Do not delay, tickets are limited and we expect to sell out. Please contact one of the individuals listed below for tickets. St. Barnabas is participating in the Market Day Pie Fundraiser. We will earn EXTRA PROFIT for every dessert you purchase using the special flyer. Pies/desserts must be pre-paid, and can be picked up on Saturday, November 21 st at 11:30. If every family buys just one dessert, we will make our goal! In addition, the top pie seller will win a $25 Target gift card!!! Please return the separate order sheet with your payment to Karen Lenehan no later than Friday November 6 th. 5 Sunday Gospel Reflections Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B November 8, 2009 Year B Read Sunday's gospel, Mark 12:28-34 Gospel Summary Mark relates the story of the scribe who asks Jesus what is the greatest commandment. This was a fairly serious question since there were some 613 commandments in the Jewish Torah. In a conversation between student and teacher, Jesus answered the scribe claiming that the greatest commandment incorporated two of the commandments known to the Jewish people. The question couldn't be answered with just one command. Jesus said that people first were to love God with their whole being. The second part of the answer understood that most people love themselves enough to take care of themselves and their affairs. Jesus said that we were to love our neighbor in the same way as we love ourselves. The scribe then repeated what he understood Jesus to say and Jesus told the man that he had a good understanding. If the scribe lived in the way that Jesus said, the scribe would certainly live in the Kingdom of God. Reflection for Families Jesus asks us to do something hard in this command. When we think about putting God first, that doesn't seem too difficult. We know we love God, so hard can this be? But do we find excuses not to worship God at mass? Or do we sometimes forget to talk to God in prayer? What about the time we were impatient with one of God's children because he didn't drive fast enough, or she didn't share her possession with us? Loving God with our whole self and thinking as much of other people as we do ourselves, is a tall order. Most of us put our own wants and needs first, even before God. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family Set two bowls or containers on the table one evening after dinner this week. Go around the table and ask each person to name their favorite activity. Use one bowl for things that do not serve God or other people and use the second bowl to represents things we do that do serve God. Put a penny in the appropriate bowl as activities are mentioned. Continue going around and depositing coins for other activities described. At the conclusion, compare the number of coins in each bowl. What did you learn about your family? Do you need to make any adjustments? If you feel pretty good about how your family shows love for God and others, what will you do to continue that? Discussion Starters 1. 6 It s A Pizza Party!!! Congratulations to Ms. DeLacey Room 105! They collected 652 Box Tops for Education and 231 Kemps Milk Tops in our October contest. We hope you enjoy your pizza! I would also like to send a huge THANK YOU to all students at St. Barnabas. The numbers from this contest were outstanding: Box Tops for Education 7,503 = $ Kemps/Swiss Valley Milk Tops 1,514 = $75.70 We have earned $ for St. Barnabas way to go everyone! 7 Turkey Drive The Turkey Drive is back! Starting November 5, to November 17, 2009, you may bring in money for a turkey. Just $15 will provide a turkey dinner for a family in need. Last year we sent a check for $500 to the Maple Morgan Park Food Pantry. Please be generous!

8 Saint Xavier University and The Shannon Center presents... Turkey Shoot - Family Style Friday, November 20 th 7pm-9pm Registration is at the door. The cost is $5 per team What is a Turkey Shoot? A Turkey Shoot is a free-throw contest to win the grand prize of a yummy turkey! One parent/guardian at least 18 years old and one child from the same family will shoot 10 free throws each. Add up your ages to be placed in the correct division: o Group 1: 25 & under o Group 2: o Group 3: o Group 4: 62 & up The family that makes the most free throws in each age group will win a turkey!

9 Thank you for your donation to Dylan s Gifts 2009! This year we took over 1,000 new toys and books to Hope Children s Hospital and Hope s Ronald McDonald House. These toys and books will help make so many kids happier when they are at the Hospital. We can t wait to do this again next year! Thank you for your help and honoring Dylan with us!
