2 Special Thanks A warm Thank You to the following for giving your time this Sunday, November 22nd: Hospitality: Marilyn Ortinau Sound: Matthew Fish Curtains, Tables, and Chairs: Mark and Nancy Fish Chalice Guild/Signs: Lizzie Fish Scrip Duty: Victor Paglisotti Children s Chapel: Susan Bell Special thank you to PJ Pyrchla for organizing the field trip to Sun Patch Youth Garden From the Interim Minister Rev. Dawn Fortune My first words this week need to be of thanks for the support and magnificent stole created by Carole Behrer to celebrate my ordination. I was amazed at the level of thought and artistry that went into its design and creation. I will wear it with pride and honor. This week s service will include a traditional(ish) cornbread communion. People who want to bake cornbread to share during the service and afterwards during our coffee hour brown bag potluck are welcome to bring it Sunday morning. (Remember that we are going to the Sun Patch Youth Garden after worship to help put the garden to bed for the winter!) Communion is a challenging topic for some Unitarian Universalists. For many, it brings to mind the high-church rituals from Christian churches we once attended. For many years, I was not comfortable using the term communion or partaking of shared bread in a ritual religious setting. I was raised Catholic, and I had unhappy memories associated with my time in that faith. I have come to look at communion in a new way now as a way to welcome others to our table, to share that which nourishes us with those we would bid welcome. This is especially important this week, when so many politicians around our country are going out of their way to exclude Syrian refugees from their table. Communion is about community about sharing resources so that all may be nourished. As Unitarian Universalists, we are called to share what we have, to speak of the foundational tenet of our faith that all are worthy of the love of the divine. Years ago, it was called Universal salvation. Today we call it the inherent worth and dignity of all people. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday. Dawn

3 Field Trip for All This Sunday, November 22nd: Come one, come all! This Sunday, November 22nd, Emerson children, youth and adults are invited to the Sun Patch Youth Garden located in the Grove neighborhood of St. Louis. As our Outreach Partner, Sun Patch is receiving 100% of our offertory plate donations this month and next. This field trip is an opportunity to put our hands and bodies where our money is going. Following our regular worship service, we will be lunching, cleaning up at Barat, then heading out to the garden. Please bring a brown bag lunch and something to share if you are so inclined. Also, remember to dress appropriately for the weather, the forecast says it will be chilly on Sunday. Our task is to spread mulch and help put the garden to rest for the winter. Our work time will be about an hour. If you would like to send your child without you, please let me know and I will arrange a carpool and send you a permission form to sign. Dawn French-Bell Emerson-supported West County Community Action Network ("WE CAN") Will Host Community Meeting on November 21 st WE CAN grew out of the weekly #BlackLivesMatter vigils that Emerson s Love First team started in October WE CAN includes Emerson s Love First team. and the group has led various West County racial justice efforts, including collaborating with the Chesterfield Police Department to address the prevalence of racial profiling in traffic stops. On Saturday, November 21 st from 9:30-11am at Lucky s Market (by the intersection of Clayton Rd & Clarkson Rd), WE CAN will host a public community meeting to build community and identify community priorities for its second year of organizing. A #BlackLivesMatter vigil and press conference will follow nearby the intersection of Clayton Rd & Clarkson Rd from 11:15am-12:15pm.
