4 Many Blessings... "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 On airplanes, the flight attendant tells passengers in case of an emergency to put on your oxygen mask before you put on your children s. You can t help others unless you first help yourself. I am reminded of this when I witness Baptisms, and students making their First Holy Communion and Confirmation. These are God s children who need guidance and support in receiving their sacraments. We have to encourage and educate them by example. Parents baptizing their children demonstrate the beginning of helping nurture a Christian life for them by making sure they start out life with God in it. When parents help their children continue their spiritual journey by supporting them in Communion and Confirmation, they are emphasizing that these sacraments are an important part of being a Child of God. They are effective role models when they attend Mass, which not only teaches their children how to worship God, but also helps them feel part of a church community where they can grow spiritually. Parents are sending the message: I am taking care of myself spiritually, and I also want my children to do the same. It s not only taking an interest in what their children are doing, it s leading by example. Godparents, sponsors, teachers, and others who care about our children also can provide support and effective examples of leading a good Christian life to those entrusted in their care. The more a child is surrounded by disciples of Jesus, the more likely he or she is to carry on this tradition as they mature in God s love. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity. The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise. In this Sunday s selection from the Acts of the Apostles Peter shows us how far God s love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter realizes that God no longer shows partiality to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God s love extends to all people, and so should ours. Copyright J. Coffee & Comfort A Support Group for Mothers Who Have Experienced the Death of a Child Monday, May 7 7-8:30 p.m. in the Parish Office When a child or grandchild dies whether an infant, toddler, school aged, teen, or adult parents mourn and begin a process of bereavement. It helps to become involved with others who have experienced something similar. Sharing eases loneliness and allows an expression of grief in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding. Grief is a testament to the person who has left us. Love does not end, so we feel the loss for years to come. Coffee & Comfort is a place to share stories, to confide in others who truly understand, and to discover hope and healing. We meet on the first Monday of every month. Bill called the five games of Bingo, our president, Gerrie Szweczyk, presented him with a monetary gift and our heartfelt thanks for being a part of our luncheons during his time at St. Ann. 6 sas Dear Friends, On a warm August day in 1985, a spunky 29 year old lady walked through the doors of St. Ann School and began to plant the seeds of learning in children. That was 33 years ago and that lady is Mrs. Debbie Johnson. Over these years, Mrs. Johnson has had the privilege to teach hundreds of students at St. Ann School, many of whom she is proud to have watched grow into successful adults. Throughout those years of dedicated teaching at St. Ann, she also made cherished friendships with colleagues, students, and families. It is with mixed emotions of joy and sadness that we write this letter. Mrs. Debbie Johnson announced that she will retire at the conclusion of this school year. It has been an honor to have Mrs. Johnson play a role in the educational development of many young people. Seeing each one succeed in his or her own way has been extremely rewarding to Mrs. Johnson, and will be something that students, staff, and parents will always remember. Mrs. Johnson has taught multiple generations of some families over the years as well: a true testament of her investment in Catholic education at St. Ann School. God chose to lead Mrs. Johnson down an adventurous path called teaching. And now God is leading her heart to a new journey enjoying a relaxing life of retirement. Mrs. Johnson s heart will be forever filled with gratitude for her experiences and time at St. Ann School. God bless you Mrs. Johnson, and thank you for your ministry as a Catholic School teacher at St. Ann School. You will be missed by all! Kindest Regards, 2nd Grade,-- --/Mrs. Kroen Saturday, April 14 was a very important day for our 2 nd graders. On this day, the children received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. Our students came to church dressed in their Sunday best ready to make their first confession. In spite of the unseasonable weather, the day proved to be a day to remember. Father Bill led the service and was accompanied by Fr. Len Dubi and Fr. Pat Lyons, who all made the day very special for our St. Ann and CCD students. Our students have been preparing all year to make the Sacrament of Reconciliation and now we will be placing all of our focus in class on preparing to receive Holy Communion on May 12 th. Please keep all of our communicants in your prayers as they prepare to receive the Holy Eucharist for the first time. CATHOLIC CHARITIES COLLECTION ON MOTHER S DAY As a senior citizen, Antonia does not have much income left after paying for rent, medications, and daily supplies. She relies on the Catholic Charities Senior Food Nutrition Program for all of her meals. Last year 145,547 food packages were delivered to low-income seniors in Cook and Lake counties. Without the food they receive from us, they would have to choose between a healthy diet and paying for medication and other necessities.
