4 Together Let Us Cause God Joy Today is the 15 th Sunday in Ordinary Time, and the Responsorial Psalm is, The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest. (Psalm 65:10, 11,12-13, 14) Matthew 13 talks about the sower who scattered the seed and how the seed s growth was dependent on where it landed. Years ago, I took a Master's Degree class at Purdue on communication in different cultures. We had many class discussions about different groups of the population, how they coped, and how they addressed jobs, culture and general knowledge. It was a wonderful class, and we had many guest speakers who offered even more background on various social groups. At the end of the course, we had to share what we had learned and present a lesson with hand-outs, music, paintings etc. One of the other students was a shop teacher in Crown Point. He worked three jobs and was an excellent carpenter. He wanted to make his presentation last. He started by saying that he had once assumed that everyone came with the same chances to make good. For his presentation, he had made each of us a tool box, and we were excited to see what they contained: each one held a compass, a pencil, a protractor, a ruler, paper and crayons. We were to draw a house, and the blueprint was included. Some of us had perfect tools, and did they ever make a great looking house! But some of us had pencils with no points, rulers that weren't straight, protractors that didn't work. It was very eye opening to us. The shop teacher explained, I have finally learned that we are not all blessed with the same tools, and we do need to be more understanding and helpful to each other. He received the top grade in the class, the only A+, and said that he learned more from that class than any other he had ever taken. He went on to be named Outstanding Teacher of the Year in Crown Point, and even his family noted a great difference in him and his attitude which, by the way, is 90% of how we all look and survive in this world. He planned to start the next school year with each student getting a tool box. I think rather a neat idea. Get your tool box ready Remember, Jesus was a carpenter. Serving Him Together, Barb A. 6 St. Ann 2014 penny drive pennies for plowing Winter may be over, but we re still buried, and every penny counts as we strive to drive away our 32k 2014 snow plow debt. So over the course of the summer, we invite you to help us make cents of the situation. Break open your piggy banks, dig into the couch cushions, dump out your change purses, look under the car floor mats, and empty your pockets of pennies. If you d like to unburden yourself of other larger coins (or bills, checks, etc.), we would be happy to have those as well! It might not seem like much, but one annoying little penny at a time can quickly add up to many helpful dollars if enough of us bring them in. pennies for perks We have challenged regular attendees of each weekend Mass to bring in at least 200,000 pennies over the summer, which would total $2,000 per Mass. The Mass that brings in the most money in total will win a special hospitality at the conclusion of the Drive. The final results and the winning Mass will be announced at Frankfest on September 12. keep saving those pennies! Donations are rolling in we ve even seen lots of bills and silver coins as well as several large checks in there! The collection bottles are in the Narthex to the right of the church doors before and after every weekend Mass. Our committee leaders want to make sure everyone enjoys themselves at the picnic, so we need some adult assistance with the concessions, food ticket sales, children s and adults games, and setup and clean up.
