2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace June 3, 2018 Dear Friends, This year Corpus Christi falls upon the heels of Memorial Day, which at first glance might seem totally unrelated. However, if we recall what took place in a small village called Abitene (present-day Tunisia) in the year 304, we might appreciate both all the more. In 304, Christians under the rule of the Emperor Diocletian were forbidden to conduct any form of religious worship. The penalty of death was placed upon the possession of Sacred Scripture, gathering on Sundays to celebrate the Eucharist and simply gathering together as an assembly. In Abitene, located along the Northern Coast of Africa and was part of the Roman Empire, forty-nine Christians were taken by surprise one Sunday while they were celebrating the Eucharist. It is related that they had gathered in the house of Octavius Felix, an activity held as an egregious offense by the Imperial Rule. They were discovered, captured and taken to Carthage where they were investigated by the Proconsul Anulinus. At first, they were asked whether they kept the Scriptures in their homes, to which they responded we keep them in our hearts. One of the most significant details that remain from these events is the response that a Christian, named Emeritus, gave to the Proconsul during the interrogations. The Christians then were asked why would they dare transgress the explicit orders of the Emperor. Emeritus replied frankly: Sine dominico non possumus, that is, without Sunday, we cannot live. In other words, they honestly and forthrightly testified that, as Christians, we cannot live without joining together on Sunday to celebrate the Eucharist. We would lack the strength to face our daily problems and we need it to not succumb to sin and death. The 49 Christians were subjected to tortures and they ultimately shed their blood for their faith in Jesus Christ. They suffered death, but they were awarded life eternal life by offering their own life as a testimony to their love for He who died for them. On Corpus Christi Sunday, we have the honor, the privilege, and the freedom, to humbly go in procession with the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, who takes the humble and fragile form of a host. As we honored this past Monday, Memorial Day, the memory of all of those who shed their blood for our freedom, we can thank them again for the freedom to publically honor Him who shed His blood to give us freedom from sin and death. Jesus has given us the ultimate gift of Himself in what the Church calls the Sacrament of Love (Sacramentum Caritatis), and the moment I realize this my life changes. My life becomes a response to this love, greater than any other, and in this way my life, my happiness, and my freedom is fulfilled. Captivated by the love of God, one can live the radical offering of one's own self in response to that love. A response that has no expectation nor measure beyond the simplicity of faithfulness and adoration. (cf., Ps 85,10) Our response is not contained within some complex secret, available only to the learned or the righteous; but, is a response of gratitude. One that is offered to the thief on the cross, to the leper, and to the lowly sinner for all. The only requisite for this is a pure and humble heart. For it is the humble heart that understands God's relationship with us as His creatures and consequently our real dependence upon Him. A dependence that was understood well by the Christians in Abitene in 304, a dependence that led them to risk (and offer) their very lives in order to live. Sine dominico non possumus! If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Three main reasons why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register. 2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married whether you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding. If you re not a registered parishioner, this will greatly delay the process. 3. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family. Anyone, regardless of where they live (and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas), is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months. Registering is easy!
