All who have no money are invited to receive grain and eat, to drink wine and milk, without paying and without cost. The Lord promises that those who listen to his word shall eat well and have life. St Paul tells the Romans that nothing at all can separate us from the love of Christ. Neither death nor life nor any creature can separate us from the love of God. In the reading from St. Matthew s gospel Jesus has pity on the hungry crowds. He takes five loaves and two small fish, blesses them and gives them to his disciples to give to the crowd. There were five thousand men, not counting women and children. All ate their fill; and when the disciples picked up the leftover fragments there was enough to fill twelve baskets. Isaiah 55:1-3 Romans 8:35, Matthew 14:13-21 Franciscan Missions We, the Franciscan friars are looking forward to coming to St. Robert Bellarmine Church the weekend of August 9 /10, 2014 to share with you the missionary and evangelization efforts that our friars are doing in the domestic and foreign missions of the Province of St. John the Baptist, Cincinnati, Ohio. Living and proclaiming the Gospel is our mission. We do so as brothers to each other and to the world, living with and for the poor, promoting justice, peace and the care of creation. We serve in many places including the Diocese of Montego Bay in Jamaica, villages in the Philippines and Africa. We are also serving in the foothills of Appalachia, the inner cities of Detroit, Cincinnati, and New Orleans. Br. Roger Lopez, O.F.M., will be coming to your church to speak on behalf of the friars. Thank you in advance for your hospitality and in your support of our friars who work in the missionary places of the province.

3 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Our scriptures this week remind us of God s great love for us and of his providence in our lives. In the reading from the Prophet Isaiah the Lord invites his people to come to him to eat and drink freely and without cost. In the gospel Jesus performs the miracle of the loaves and fishes, feeding the five thousand. God promises not just nourishment for our bodies, but food for our souls that will lead us to salvation. Isaiah speaks to the Israelites near the end of the Babylonian captivity more than five hundred years before the birth of Christ. All you who are thirsty, come to the water! Throughout the scriptures God uses the image of providing water in the wilderness as a sign of his fidelity to his people. You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat! God s gifts are freely given. The prophecy is a sign of great hope for the people. In the gospel vast crowds of people have followed Jesus to a deserted place. His heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. God cares about us deeply and performs miracles to take care of us when we are in need. At the end of the day his disciples ask Jesus to dismiss the crowds to go buy food for themselves. Jesus tells the disciples that there is no need for them (the crowds) to go away, and he instructs the disciples themselves to feed the people! This is a tall order, since they only have five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus blesses and breaks the bread. When the disciples distributed the bread there was more than enough for all. Jesus performs a miracle to feed five thousand men, not counting the women and children, with twelve full baskets left over. The miracle, of course, is a sign of God s presence in the world and of his compassion for us. The feeding of the five thousand provides more than just physical nourishment for the people. It provides them with hope because they have seen God intervene in their lives to help them. This miracle also points to an even greater miracle to come. The miracle prefigures the Eucharist itself, where Christ feeds us with his own body and blood for our spiritual nourishment and salvation. Because of his faith in God s providence, St. Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. St. Paul says that we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. He tells us twice in this short passage to the Romans that no one and no thing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. God invites us to come to his table. He offers his love and salvation freely, as a gift. We have no money of our own. The coin of salvation is the blood of Christ on the cross. In the Eucharist we participate in Christ s own death and resurrection and are given the bread and wine of eternal life. Through the Prophet Isaiah God tells us that the only cost to us is that we come to him heedfully. The Lord says, heed me and you will eat well...come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. In order to receive the gift of salvation we need to show up. God says that he will renew the everlasting covenant. When we listen and obey him we are keeping our part of the covenant. And when we do, God promises the benefits assured to King David. We will reign with him in God s kingdom and nothing will ever separate us from that love. St. Robert s will host a Blood Drive next weekend. The blood supply drops to critical levels in the summertime as more people are away on vacation and the need goes up due to the increase in accidents during the summer. There will be a blood donor sign-up after all the masses this weekend. The final session of Theology on Tap will be held tomorrow (Monday) at 7:30 in Kernaghan Hall. Theology on Tap is a four part speaker and conversation series for young adults in their 20s and 30s. Clarissa Aljentera, Coordinator of Adult Faith Formation & Social Media for the Archdiocese, will present a talk on how to apply the art of improvisation to our spiritual life. The Summer Mission Appeal will be held next weekend. Brother Roger Lopez of the Franciscan Friars will be with us to share their work with the poor of Jamaica. There will be a second collection next weekend. Envelopes are in your packets and available at church today. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

7 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 WORK IN PROGRESS Work continues on the renovated lunchroom at St. Robert Bellarmine School. Space for a new library/computer lab and science lab is being constructed along with an outside stairwell for the school year. Thinking College? Thinking Priesthood? Come to St. Joe s! St. Joseph College Seminary is a good fit for men who are interested in college and at the same time want to discover if God may be calling them to be a Catholic priest. Our seminary building is located on the lakeshore campus of Loyola University Chicago. Seminarians pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a minor in Communication from Loyola as they complete the Program for Priestly Formation. Be Challenged In addition to pursuing an academic degree, our seminarians continue to serve others, develop who they are as disciples of Jesus Christ, nurture their spiritual life and take the time needed to discover how God is calling them. Seminarians fully apply themselves in a formation program designed to develop good and healthy priests for the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Come & See! The best way to see if St. Joe s is right for you is to come and see it for yourself. Schedule a visit, arrange a campus tour, shadow a seminarian for a day, talk to our vocation director, or just stop by. Taking a look doesn t mean you have to apply, but it can help greatly in making a decision as you respond to the life God may be asking you to discover.
