Margaret Ludden, Robert Walsh, Patricia Klenck, Gina Brettman Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph The Book of Sirach, part of the Wisdom literature of the Old Testament, was written to guide the people in obedience to the will of God. Today s reading is a commentary on the fourth commandment, to honor one s father and mother. The author has written down the wisdom from his grandfather (Jesus Ben Sira). He sets forth a very practical guide to healthy family relationships. God sets a father in honor over his children and confirms a mother s authority over them. Children must honor their parents and care for them when they are older. St. Paul continues this theme in writing to the Colossians. He says that husbands and wives must be mutually supportive and children must obey their parents. He tells them to be kind, compassionate, humble, patient, thankful and forgiving. Above all, they are to put on love. In a sense, love is who they are to become. The gospel of Luke shows the Holy Family following their religious duty by bringing the child Jesus to the Temple to be consecrated to the Lord. Two devout worshippers, Simeon and Anna, display incredible joy upon encountering the child. They reveal Jesus role in our salvation. On this first Sunday of the Christmas season we gather to recall that holiness does not lie in extraordinary works, but in living a life of faith each day. We remember the faith of our ancestors, celebrate the faith of the Holy Family, and pray that our families are led to a stronger faith as they grow in love. Sirach 3:2-6, Colossians 3:12-17 Luke 2:41-52 Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God celebrates and affirms that Jesus, though born of a human mother, truly is divine. Promulgated at the Council of Ephesus in 431, the dogma affirms that in ways beyond our understanding God chose to reveal his plan of salvation to us through Jesus Christ. Jesus, uniquely, is both human and divine. We cannot comprehend how this is so, but we believe that it is so, and that Jesus is the true source of our salvation. Numbers 6:22-27 Galatians 4:4-7 Luke 2:16-21

3 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. This feast continues our celebration of Christmas. Jesus was born into our human family to sanctify our families. When we honor the Holy Family, we honor our own families and seek to imitate their mutual love. We look to Jesus, Mary and Joseph as a model to teach us love, respect, honor and selfsacrifice for one another. We seek their prayers to help us in our family relationships. In the Incarnation we participate in the Divine Exchange : God joins our human family so that we may join his divine family. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph mirrors the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in that the three are truly one in a divine relationship of love. Just so, our families, though made up of many members, are still one family, united in love. The scriptures today give us some guidance on how family members should treat one another. The reading from Sirach is a commentary on the Fourth Commandment. We should remember that he speaks of God s will, not just some maxim that we can choose to ignore. Parents have honor and authority over their children. We are called to honor our parents, to take care of them when they are old, even if they become infirm in mind or body. Since family relationships are based on the love of God, we should accept these responsibilities as labors of love, not as burdens or as inconveniences. Interestingly, this Commandment is the only one that comes with a specific promise from God: that you may have long life in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you. We are being promised eternal life. The patience and love we show our parents will be rewarded as we are more closely conformed to the divine image in which we were created. St. Paul echoes this theme in his Letter to the Colossians as he describes the virtues of a healthy relationship. We are to show compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. We are to bear with one another and forgive one another just as God has forgiven us. And above all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. St. Paul really challenges us to act on our faith, especially when it is difficult and especially toward those we love. Husbands and wives are to be mutually loving and respectful, avoiding bitterness. Children are to obey their parents. Parents are not to provoke or discourage their children. St. Paul tells us that the key to all this is gratitude. If we are grateful for the people in our lives, the love they give us and how blessed we are to be loved, the grievances will not upset us out of proportion. Nor will our grievances cause us to lose perspective on what is truly important in life: the fact that we are in a relationship of love with one another and with God. The gospel tells us the wonderful story of the Presentation in the Temple (the fourth joyful mystery of the rosary). Joseph and Mary bring the infant Jesus to the Temple, fulfilling the Law of Moses. Joseph officially claims Jesus as his son, thereby fulfilling God s plan that the savior will come from the House of David (pretty clever of God, isn t it?). Simeon, a holy and devout man who has long been waiting for the fulfillment of the vision, takes the child in his arms and blesses him. His prayer of gratitude is recited every night by those who pray the breviary: Now, master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all peoples, a light for the revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel. The prophetess Anna, who has been waiting over sixty years for this moment, comes forth to confirm the message to Simeon, that this is indeed the child whom God has sent for the redemption of Jerusalem. A special word of thanks to all who have worked so hard throughout the Advent season to prepare our wonderful celebrations and to share the glad tidings with our family of faith. To all our musicians, singers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, greeters, altar servers and liturgy volunteers who worked on our worship celebrations; to our Art & Environment committee who keep our church beautiful and festive; to the Parents Association, the School staff and volunteers who hosted all the events and celebrations this past month. Wall Calendars for 2019, courtesy of Lawrence Funeral Home, are available at the back of church and in the rectory. We are providing a free copy of Edward Sri s new book, Into His Likeness, to our parishioners and those who attend our Christmas masses. Please take only one copy per family so that everyone can enjoy this exciting journey to discover Jesus in our daily lives. I hope that everyone had a blessed Christmas, and that our children and faculty are enjoying a well-deserved vacation. Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy new year. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
