Jerusalem is besieged by the Babylonians and will soon be destroyed. The people have consistently ignored the warnings of the prophets. Jeremiah now tells them that the Lord will make a new covenant with Israel. The Lord promises to place his law within them and to write it upon their hearts. He will be their God, and they will be his people; God will forgive their evil-doing and remember their sins no more. The reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds the people that even though Jesus was the Son of God, he was in the flesh and he suffered. It was through his obedience in accepting his cruel fate that he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. In the gospel Jesus tells his listeners that only those who lose their life for the sake of the gospel will preserve it for eternal life. Jesus says that he will be glorified when he is lifted up (hung on the cross); and in so doing he will draw everyone to himself (be the source of salvation). Jeremiah 31:31-34 Hebrews 5:7-9 John 12:20-33 LENTEN RECONCILIATION SERVICE We journey through Lent to meet Jesus at the Font of Baptism at the Mass of the Resurrection (Easter). Through this time of fasting, prayer and penitence we seek to purify our hearts so that the Holy Spirit may find in us a fitting dwelling place. Just as we often do spring cleaning of our homes, we do regular spring cleaning of our souls. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an important spiritual practice for all Catholics. While we are required to confess all mortal sins to be in a state of grace to receive communion, the Church also recommends regular examination of conscience and confession of venial sins as a way of opening our hearts to our need of God s grace. These spiritual tune-ups help us to see where we are getting off-track in our relationships and behaviors that prevent us from living fully the life of grace. The Parish Lenten Reconciliation Service will be celebrated this Tuesday, March 24 at 7 p.m. with scripture, a time for personal reflection, examination of conscience and individual confession (either face-toface or in the confessional). This will be a grace-filled time for all of us. May all persevere on our Lenten journey and come to the joy of Easter. This coming Saturday, March 28th, from 4 to 4:45 p.m. will be the last opportunity for regular reconciliation before Easter.

3 Fifth Sunday of Lent Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk The Fifth Sunday of Lent begins what is called the Passiontide or the time of the Lord s passion, because in today s gospel Jesus tells the apostles that his hour has come. Jesus is already in Jerusalem, getting ready for the Passover. As our Lenten journey nears its end, Jesus reminds us that the goal of the journey is the Cross. It is only by going to, and through, the Cross that forgiveness of sin is possible. The crucifixion is the great event of history, the turning point in the story of humanity, and the focal point of our relationship to God. It has been written that the Passion is the story; all else is commentary. It is only in the Cross that the gospel has any meaning. In fact, our very lives can only have meaning when seen in light of the Cross. Today Jesus says that the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. His glory is not the Transfiguration that we heard three weeks ago. The glory is the Cross. Jesus tell us that unless the grain of wheat dies, it remains simply a grain of wheat; but when it dies it produces much fruit. The fruit of Jesus death is the forgiveness of sin, the reconciliation of humanity with God. Salvation has been achieved through Christ s death and resurrection. But we must make this salvation a reality in our own lives. We must all realize that the Cross is the turning point in our lives. Jesus says, whoever loves his life loses it, but whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me. This is not easy, nor was it easy for Jesus. I am troubled now. Yet what should I say, Father, save me from this hour? But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Being a Christian isn t easy. The way to salvation is through obedience to the will of God. This is the exact opposite of original sin that is glorified in our culture. The Letter to the Hebrews tells a different story. Jesus offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears. He clearly did not want to suffer and die. He learned obedience from what he suffered, and when he was made perfect he became the source of salvation for all who obey him. Jesus offered prayers and supplications in agony. In his agony in the garden Jesus asks God to let the cup pass from him. But Jesus adds, nevertheless, Thy will, not mine be done. To follow Christ is going to be troubling. To follow Christ will cause pain. But we are purified when we are obedient in the midst of hardships. This willingness to trust in God and to follow him is the goal of Lent, of our entire Christian journey. The Prophet Jeremiah tells us that God will make a new Covenant with us by placing his law within us, writing it upon our hearts. The promise is salvation. The Covenant comes in Baptism when we receive the Holy Spirit which is God dwelling within us, writing his law in our hearts. Then God makes another promise. He says, I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sins no more. Sanctification is the process through which we undergo transformation and is the proof of our acceptance of the Cross. The good news is that the Cross is not the end, but the beginning. Jesus rose from the dead. The Resurrection is God s fulfillment of the Covenant. It is the doorway that leads to heaven. We don t endure the Cross for its own sake. We allow the cross to unite us to God so that we can participate in the Resurrection. Lent is followed by Easter. In dying to self, we rise with Christ to eternal life. We have begun to receive bids for the new lighting system in the church. The original estimate of $30,000 seems to be accurate. We hope to have all the bids in by the end of the month and begin the work as soon as we get the contract approved by the Archdiocese. Since we hope to fund this project through the Annual Catholic Appeal, if you have not yet made a pledge, I encourage you to do so. Donations can also be made directly to the parish capital repair fund. Thank you for your continued support. Our Parish Reconciliation Service will be celebrated this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. This will be an evening of prayer, scripture and song with opportunities for individual confessions. The last scheduled opportunity for Reconciliation before Easter is this Saturday, March 28 from 4:00 4:45 p.m. Holy Week begins next weekend on Palm Sunday and the distribution of palms. There will be a second collection next weekend for our Easter Flowers. The Parents Association will hold the Easter Candy Sale after all the masses next weekend as well. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

7 March 22, 2015 Page 7 ROSARIES WANTED FOR UGANDA Uganda is a landlocked country in Eastern Africa. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, which is the largest tropical lake in the world. Uganda, whose capital Kampala is located on Lake Victoria, is a developing nation with approximately 38% of the population living on less than $1.25 a day. Poverty remains deep-rooted in the rural areas, which are home to more than 85% of the Ugandans. Uganda s population is skewed toward the younger generation with 48% of the population being less than 15 years of age. Christians comprise 88% of Uganda s population while Muslims represent 12% of the population. During Lent this year, will you please donate for Uganda new, used, or broken rosaries that can be repaired. You can place the rosaries into the labeled collection containers in St. Robert Bellarmine s vestibules The rosaries will be given to four people: Fr. John Bosco Ssekkomo, who is assigned to a parish in the business area called Nateete in the capital Kampala; to Fr. Dennis Kasule of the rural village of Bunnamweri, which is located in south central Uganda and west of the capital Kampala; to Bishop Martin Wamika of Jinja, the second largest city of Uganda and located on Lake Victoria to the northeast of Kampala; and to an order of Franciscan nuns. They will make certain that the rosaries will go to the people in the rural areas in the interior of Uganda. Sacrifice, prayer, and almsgiving are Lenten practices that the Catholic Church asks us to perform to renew our discipleship in Christ. Your donation of new, used, or broken rosaries for Uganda is one way of performing Lenten almsgiving. In 2014 during Lent, the parishioners of St. Robert Bellarmine parish donated over one thousand rosaries for Uganda. More rosaries are still needed. Thank you for your support. Maureen Moskal Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Arlington Heights The Way of the Cross - Downtown Chicago On Good Friday, April 3, 2015, the lay movement Communion and Liberation, with the blessing of the Archdiocese of Chicago, will lead the Way of the Cross around downtown Chicago. We will follow the cross silently through the busy city, living the memory of the Passion of the Lord, with stops that include meditations and choir music. Now in its eleventh year, the Way of the Cross in Downtown Chicago attracts over five hundred people each year making the event a unique experience of faith for those who join and an impressive sign for many bystanders who are often struck by the sight of this procession and are recalled to the significance of Good Friday. We cordially invite all the people of the archdiocese to join us at 8:45 am at Daley Plaza (Dearborn/Washington). We will then cross the river on the Michigan Avenue bridge and conclude at Holy Name Cathedral around 12:00 pm, stopping for meditations along the route. For more information you can visit or call (312)
