Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Solemnity of Pentecost The reading from the Acts of the Apostles describes the believers gathered in one place together as Jews from every nation descended on Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost (the celebration of the Law given to Moses on Mt. Sinai). Pentecost, Greek for 50 days, was celebrated fifty days after Passover and becomes the birthday of the Church. Described here, the Holy Spirit comes upon the first disciples in a strong driving wind and then settled on them as tongues as of fire. The large crowd of Jews were astounded and amazed as they listened to the disciples and heard them speak, each in their own native language, as they proclaimed the Good News of Jesus. The Letter of St. Paul to the Galatians describes how one is to live by the Spirit. Paul contrasts the results of one who is guided by the Spirit to one who lives in the desire of the flesh. Living in the flesh leads to immorality, impurity, and hatreds; while living in the Spirit leads to love, joy, and peace. For Paul, those who accepted Christ cannot live as those unconcerned about the things of God. They must imitate the fruits of the Spirit leading to love of fellow human beings. The reading from John s gospel relates Jesus visitation to the disciples on the first day of the week (the day after his resurrection). They were cowering in the upper room, afraid of the authorities. Jesus bids them peace, and shows them his hands and his side. They rejoice. Jesus again tells them peace be with you and breathing on them he says, receive the Holy Spirit. He tells them, as the Father has sent me, so I send you. Acts 2:1-11 Galatians 5:16-25 John 20:19-23 Ordinary Time Tomorrow we return to Ordinary Time in the Church calendar. There is nothing "ordinary" about Ordinary Time. It refers to ordinal (numbered) time. The Weeks of the Year are numbered consecutively to mark the passing of time. Each Sunday is a Holy Day of Obligation as we celebrate the Paschal mystery. The Feast of Pentecost marks the end of the Easter season. Ordinary Time calls us to go forth and live the joy of Easter in our "ordinary" (daily) lives. To mark the change of seasons, the color of our vestments is green rather than the white of Easter. Ordinary Time extends to the end of the Church year, highlighted by the feast of Christ the King. The new Church year will begin on December 2nd with the celebration of the First Sunday of Advent.

3 Pentecost Sunday Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, rejoicing in the gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost, Greek for 50 Days, officially ends the Easter season. For forty days after the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples and continued to instruct them. At his Ascension, he told them to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Ten days later, while the apostles were in fearful hiding, the Holy Spirit descended on them as a great wind with tongues of fire. God never does anything half-way. These manifestations of God do more than reveal his power; and are more than a wake-up call pointing to an important event. In Pentecost the disciples were filled with God himself. They received the promised indwelling of the Holy Spirit. In the Acts of the Apostles, we are told how this transformed them. Strengthened by the power of God, the disciples boldly proclaimed the Risen Christ as Lord and Messiah. Thus, Pentecost completes the Paschal Mystery and marks the birth of the Church. In its visible dimension, the Church is created around the apostles who journeyed with Christ and were witness to both his resurrection and his teachings. Jesus gave the apostles the commission to testify to the Spirit of Truth that has been given to them and to proclaim the good news of salvation. The Advocate will also teach them to testify to the truth which is the glory of the Father. In its invisible, or spiritual dimension, the Church forms the mystical Body of Christ, a spiritual communion of those who have received the gift of the Holy Spirit (baptism). The bishops and presbyters call the visible community together so that the Holy Spirit can bring out the invisible spiritual gifts of all the faithful to live the good news. In John s gospel, Pentecost actually takes place on Easter itself. He relates that it was on the evening of that first day when Jesus had risen from the tomb that Jesus comes to the disciples. His first words are Peace be with you. And, of course, the disciples rejoice when they see him. Easter is first and foremost a season of joy. When Jesus preached his public ministry, he promised to be with them always. In the Resurrection they experience the joy of that promise come true. What St. John proclaims is that the kingdom of God is already present in the world. Jesus first words are peace be with you. It is Christ s presence that brings peace, a peace that the world cannot give. He then breathes the Holy Spirit upon them. They receive not just the power of God, but God himself. The Holy Spirit is the real presence of Christ in the world. This is of utmost importance to St. John. In his gospel the disciples receive the Holy Spirit before the Ascension. John wants us to understand that Jesus never leaves us. The apostles are commanded to impart this same Holy Spirit, the divine life of Christ, to all who come to believe. St. Paul tells us that the Holy Spirit bestows his gifts on all those who profess Jesus as Lord. We all have different gifts but they come from the same Spirit to contribute to building the kingdom of God here on earth. And the peace that Christ gives us is his own indwelling presence in our lives that casts out fear and enables us to live as children of God. After Jesus breathes on them, giving them the Holy Spirit, he commissions them as the Father has sent me, so I send you. This marks the beginning of the Church, reminding us that we are a missionary church, called to proclaim the gospel. Jesus gives the apostles the authority to forgive sins, a reference to baptism and membership in the body of Christ. We still proclaim this gospel 2,000 years later. We proclaim the Good News that in Christ Jesus we receive forgiveness for sin and are reunited with God by the love of Christ. Christ ascends to heaven and leaves us the Holy Spirit to guide the Church on earth in her mission to build the kingdom of God. As St. John reminds us, the kingdom of God is already present in the living body of Christ. We are called to live out our baptismal grace as the Holy Spirit calls forth our individual gifts so the divine image can grow in us and transform the world. As I mentioned last week, our Red Ribbon Gala was a wonderful time and a huge success. We raised over $38,000 dollars for the parish and school. We had a beautiful May Crowning celebration, one of the highlights of the month, on May 12. Thanks to Mrs. Sue Peters, our 8th grade teacher, for organizing and rehearsing the celebration. On Monday, May 28th, our nation will celebrate Memorial Day to honor all the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We will have a special blessing for all our veterans and active duty military personnel at all the masses next weekend. Our Memorial Day mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
