ROBERT BELLARMINE St. Robert Bellarmine was born in 1542 and became one of the great teachers of the Catholic faith. In a time of great turmoil (the Reformation), St. Robert systematized Church teachings against the attacks of the Reformers. His greatest work, Disputations on the Controversies, set forth Christian doctrine in a clear and compelling way. A life-long scholar of the Scriptures and the early Fathers of the Church, his writings helped explain not only the content of our faith, but that Jesus as a living person is the source of revelation. Our faith is not merely a set of doctrines, but the person of Christ living in the Church today. He wrote two important catechisms on the faith. He was appointed the personal theologian to Pope Clement VIII who elevated him to the office of Cardinal based on his great learning. St. Robert Bellarmine remained a Jesuit priest at heart, living a life of austerity and generosity to the poor. He died on September 17, 1621, was canonized in 1930 and was named Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI in (Adapted from Saint of the Day, edited by Leonard Foley, O.F.M.). Because our parish was founded in 1930 it was decided to dedicate our parish to this newly canonized saint. In the development of religious education St. Robert was the first person to recognize that children are different from adults. He said that if we are going to teach our children we have to teach them as children, not simply as little adults. He believed in "age appropriate" learning, a model we take for granted today but was revolutionary in his time. The reading from the Book of Wisdom describes the importance and priority of our personal relationship to the Spirit of Wisdom. The writer says, I prayed...i pleaded and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, And deemed riches nothing in comparison with her He goes on to say that God is the guide of Wisdom and the director of the wise. St. Paul reminds the Corinthians that they have received the Spirit of God, not that of the world. He says the natural person, the one caught up only in him/herself and the life of this world, does not accept what is taught by the Spirit. Paul says that it is only the spiritual person, the one putting on the mind of Christ, who is able to discern and act wisely. The gospel of Matthew today begins with Jesus telling his disciples, None of those who cry out, Lord, Lord, will enter the Kingdom of God but only the one who does the will of my Father in Heaven. Only the one who hears and follows his words is wise. Jesus then tells the well known parable of the wise man building on rock and the foolish man building on sand. Today we are instructed that we must build our lives upon the Word of God. When we do, the Wisdom (Spirit) of the Lord will come to us and lead us to the Kingdom of God. Wisdom 7:7-10, Corinthians 2: Matthew 7:21, 24-29

3 September 15, 2013 Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the feast of our patron, St. Robert Bellarmine. His gift to us today is his love for Scriptures and for the Church. His teachings remind us that the person of Jesus Christ is the source of our faith and the revelation of God. The doctrines of the faith are revealed truths that lead us to the Truth, Jesus himself. St. Robert saw the Church both as the institution that nurtured the faith of the apostles and as the manifestation of the living Christ. The scripture readings for the call us to seek the Wisdom of God for our lives. The author promises those who value God s ways will receive the Spirit of Wisdom (God himself) a gift worth far more than the riches of the world. As we remember St. Robert, let us imitate his search for wisdom and holiness in our own lives. We also celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the dedication of the new church. It is a good time to reflect on the meaning of parish and what it means to be a community of faith. The church is not simply a place but the focal point of our spiritual lives. Catholics often speak of going to church or mass. It is actually more fitting to speak of gathering with the church. The difference is not one of semantics, but a whole different way of viewing the world. When church is a place we go to, it can become simply one more thing we do, another activity in our busy lives. But when church is the community with which we gather to be with the Lord, then church becomes what God means it to be, the center of our lives where we are nourished together, and where we share the blessings of faith, community and sacrament. It is not simply what we do but who we are. Mass is family time. Just as the Sabbath is a gift from God as a day of rest and time to share with our families, so, too, the celebration of the mass is a gift from God. This is also family time. We gather as God s family to rest in the Lord and to share in the celebration of all God s gifts. Through our presence at Church, the whole community is a gift to one another. Being together allows us to live in, and share, the blessings of being God s people. Together we become the living body of Christ. By realizing that we don t just "go" to church, but we gather "with" the church, we understand that through this celebration we are nourished and sustained, and able to move back into our busy lives and bring God s message of love to the world around us. To help us define and understand who we are as parish here at St. Robert s, we will be holding a Ministry Fair in Kernaghan Hall after all the masses this weekend. I strongly encourage everyone to come downstairs to see all the different ministries that take place in our parish and to help build our parish by sharing your gifts and talents. We also will be updating our Parish Census. Please take the form that has your name on it and update the information that we have in our records. There is also space to tell us what you like about our parish and what changes or new ministries you would like to see. We hope to gain a deeper understanding of our larger parish in order to grow and better serve our faith community. Coffee and Donuts will be served after all the Sunday masses downstairs in Kernaghan Hall. We will also celebrate Catechetical Sunday at the 10 a.m. mass with a special blessing for the Catechists and Volunteers in our Religious Education programs. There is no greater mission in the Church than to share our faith and pass it on to the next generation. Our Deacon Candidate, Bill Frere, is beginning the third year of formation. He has been sharing part of his journey in a series of articles (see page five). This year he will be focusing on diaconal service to the liturgy our sacraments, liturgical ministries, prayer and devotionals as well as sacramental ministry to the sick and the homebound. You may notice something different this morning as he lectors at the 10:00 a.m. mass. He will be vested in an alb the same white garment that priests, deacons and altar servers wear. Technically all liturgical ministers should wear albs at the liturgy, but it simply is not part of parish spirituality nor very practical. Bill will occasionally be vested at special celebrations to highlight his ongoing formation in service to our church. I will be featured in the current issue (September 15) of the New World under the 5 Minutes With Father column. I am grateful to be able to share part of my faith journey with the larger Church in the Archdiocese. Next weekend we will celebrate Seminary Sunday when we will host a guest from Mundelein who will share his faith journey as a seminarian. There will also be a second collection at all the masses to support our seminaries. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

ROBERT BELLARMINE! Did you know that St. Robert Bellarmine parishioners and families contribute 1,000 s of volunteer hours each year?! Every effort contributes to making St. Robert Bellarmine parish a vibrant community. WANT TO BE A PART OF IT? Stop by Kernaghan hall a er mass September 14 and 15. There will be coffee and donuts. All parish organiza ons and ministries will have tables invi ng you to learn about their efforts and ways you might be able to help out as a volunteer. We will also be kicking off our Parish Census. Stop by the table to help us update our records on registered parishioners. Don't miss out! EUCHARISTIC ADORATION...HE IS PHYSICALLY WITH US When Jesus told the apostles that He would be with the Church even to the end of time, He not only meant this in a spiritual sense but also in a physical sense. Jesus knew man and his weaknesses. He knew that without His close physical association with man, we would falter and stray. The institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper was not for just the moment, but it was His gift to us by staying with us physically through time. The Council of Trent in 1545 confirmed that not only was the Holy Eucharist to be received, it was also to be worshipped and adored. This document also stated that the Blessed Sacrament should also be reserved in churches and carried to the sick. In other words, Jesus was to be with us at all times--- --in the Churches, at the Masses, and even in our homes or hospitals when we are sick. Conversely, Jesus has given us an opportunity to be with Him at all times. This Wednesday the Church will be open for Adoration from 9 am - 5 pm with Benediction immediately following at 5 pm. Jesus is there in The Real Presence, exposed to us, not in His glory, but in a quiet way, ready to listen to us and to spread His Blessings upon us. He is willing to be with us as He promised. Are we willing to be with Him or are we too busy? There, now, I have found the whole secret of it: the unconditional self to Our Lord. (St. Peter Julian Eymard)

5 September 15, 2013 Page 5 YEAR ONE CANDIDATE We began our second year of formation for the Permanent Diaconate in August During formation this year, we took formal academic classes in Sacraments of Initiation, Old Testament, New Testament, Christology, Evangelization, Moral Theology, Diaconal Ministry in a multi-cultural Church, monthly theological reflection groups and spiritual direction, retreats and days of reflection, as well as practice sessions on Presiding at Rituals and Worship. It was a rigorous and demanding Year of Candidacy, full of research papers, exams and hours of intense reading and reflection. On October 14, 2012, Bishop Goedert called me to the Rite of Candidacy where I publicly resolved to complete my preparations and be prepared in mind and spirit to faithfully serve Christ and the Church as a Permanent Deacon. This was the first official recognition by the Church that I have a vocation to the Diaconate. Ginger was also required to write a letter of consent to Cardinal George in support of my moving forward on the Path of Candidacy. On April 13, 2013, Bishop Perry presided at the Rite of Reader where I was instituted as a Reader in the Catholic Church. Unlike the role of lay lector, the Reader is a formal Office in the Church where I am required, as a vested minister, to proclaim the Word in the liturgical assembly, to instruct children and adults in the faith, and to prepare them to receive the sacraments. With this new role, I am being called to take a more active role in the liturgical life of the parish as a visible sign of Christ the Servant. In addition to all of the above mentioned responsibilities for this year, I am also tasked with a Ministry to the Word Field Education Project. It is designed to assist me in becoming aware of the various ministries and activities at St. Robert s, develop an awareness of the skills necessary in working with these ministries, and become sensitive to the dynamics of pastoral relationships. It challenged me to observe 9 different ministries within the parish and then to develop a proposed ministry for St. Robert s that is not currently being offered. The completed project was submitted by August 1, 2013 and is intended to be part of our Parish Transformation Action Plan. This is the last in a series of 3 written by Deacon candidate/st Robert Bellarmine parishioner, Bill Frere. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN GIVING A LITTLE OF YOUR TIME TO THE LITURGY? HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF BEING A LECTOR OR A EUCHARISTIC MINISTER? Each week Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers help to ensure that the Liturgy flows smoothly, ensure lay people have an important role in the celebration, and represent the various cultures and ages of our community. Lectors generally serve once a month, Eucharistic Ministers serve 2-3 Sundays a month. If you think you might have the time to dedicate to this important ministry, please come to the Training session on Thursday, September 26th at 7pm in church. If you have any questions, please call Chrissy at

For more information, please contact Lisa Jerzyk, at ljerzyk@catholiccharities.net; or ST. ROBERT BELLARMINE IS NOW A FAIR TRADE COFFEE PARISH! You might see the announcement above and think, What does that mean? or Why does it matter? The decision of the St. Robert Bellarmine Parish Organizations to be Fair Trade makes a huge difference. First some facts: Coffee is the second highest traded commodity in the world second only to oil. Coffee is grown by millions of people worldwide primarily in impoverished countries. The price of coffee impacts the livelihood of those millions of people. Fair Trade means that those who grow the coffee are receiving a fair price for their efforts. Fair Trade means that those who grow the coffee are able to do things they have never been able to do before such as provide enough food for their families or send their children to school. What does that mean for us here at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish? All the coffee served at parish events, coffee and donut Sundays, and other gatherings in Kernaghan Hall will be Fair Trade Coffee. We will be making a difference in the lives of millions by choosing coffee with the Fair Trade Logos. If you would like more information, go to: or If you would like to support this effort, please make a donation to help purchase the fair trade coffee we use here at SRB. $10 or $20 will help keep this initiative going. If you would like to purchase fair trade coffee for your home, look for the fair trade logos on products in the grocery store. Every cup counts!

7 September 15, 2013 Page 7 COMMUNITY - CENSUS How are you Inspired by Community? How are you Inspired by our St. Robert Bellarmine Community? How do you help to build a community that inspires others? As a parish we celebrate community in a number of ways. The parish picnic, the Harvest Gala, our festive St. Patrick s Party and Comedy Nights are all big ways of celebrating and building community. But in small, countless ways every day the people of St. Robert Bellarmine build community that inspires us to be all God has called us to be. Next weekend after all the masses, come down to Kernaghan hall to enjoy a little hospitality, and a chance to learn about all the different parish organizations and ministries. Find out how you might be able to lend an hour or two a month. Whether you like to garden, coach, tutor, or work on a computer your dedication is important! We are also starting our Parish Census. You will have a chance to look at the information we have for you on file and update addresses, s, etc. Not only will this help us update our records, but it will also give us a chance to find out how we can better serve the needs of the community. Plan on coming down to Kernaghan Hall after all masses September 14 and 15. Enjoy some coffee and donuts, update your records, and see how you might be able to help build community.
