Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the book of Deuteronomy, the Israelites are afraid that, after Moses dies, if they hear the voice of God again they will die. Moses tells them that the Lord will raise up another prophet for them. The Lord tells them that, if they do not listen to this prophet, they will have to answer to God for it. In the second reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians that he wants them to be free of anxiety. He says that it is best to remain in their present unmarried state so that they might more easily follow the Lord without distraction. In the gospel Jesus teaches in the synagogue, astonishing the people because he drives out unclean spirits and speaks with the authority of God. Deuteronomy 18: Corinthians 7: Mark 1: The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord commemorates when, at eight days old, Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. In bringing Jesus to the Temple and naming him as his son, Joseph becomes his legal father, making Jesus truly the Son of David and heir to the Messianic Prophecy. The Presentation of the Lord is the Fourth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary, helping us to remember the great events of salvation history in the Incarnation. The prophet Malachi, announcing the coming of the messenger to prepare the way of the Lord, says that the Messiah will be like a refiner s fire, purifying the children of Levi to restore the kingdom to the favor of the Lord. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews says that Jesus freely accepted his own death to free humanity from slavery to sin and death. In the Gospel the Holy Spirit sends Simeon into the Temple to take the baby Jesus in his arms, bless him and announce that he has seen the salvation of Israel. The prophetess Anna confirms the message saying that this child is the redemption of Jerusalem. Malachi 3:1-4 Hebrews 2:14-18 Luke 2:22-40 continued from page three The Feast of St. Blase will be celebrated this Saturday at the 8:30 a.m. mass. There will also be a communal throat blessing at the Friday 8:30 a.m. mass attended by the school and at all the weekend masses. Please see page four for a brief explanation of this feast. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

3 The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Our Scriptures today call us to listen and to act on the Word of God. We are reminded that God will hold us responsible, not only for the sins we commit, but also for the good we fail to do. As Christians, our lives are oriented toward God and the divine life we have received in baptism. So often we get caught up in the affairs of the world that we do not hear the Word of God. Even worse, at times we may even deliberately ignore God s commands. In the first reading, Moses tells the people that God will give them what they asked for, namely a prophet to tell them the Word of God. They were afraid to hear God s voice or see his face. They knew that it was dangerous to come face to face with the living God. So they asked for an intermediary, someone to bring God s word to them. But throughout the Scriptures they ignored the prophets when the message was not what they wanted to hear. And God replies that anyone who fails to listen to his word spoken through the prophets will suffer the consequences. Fortunately, we are blessed to have a prophet who speaks God s Word. In fact, the prophet is God s Word. The prophet promised to us is Jesus himself. In the gospel reading we hear Jesus teaching in the synagogue with authority. The people were astonished at this because their regular teachers (the scribes and the Pharisees) always deferred to the higher authority of the Law and the Prophets. Jesus claimed that authority for himself, driving out demons as a sign of that authority. Even the demons acknowledged him as the Holy One of God. And so the Word of God is made known to us through Sacred Scripture. The Bible is God s self-revelation to us for our salvation. Jesus performs physical cures so that we may be open to the Word that gives spiritual healing and the promise of everlasting life. To act on his Word is to be healed spiritually so that we may share in his own divine life. God gives us commandments so that we may be conformed to his image. St. Paul s odd advice to the Corinthians is not a commentary on marriage but a call to keep our eyes focused on God. He wants us to be free of anxieties, not to impose a restraint upon us, so that we can see clearly the will of God and act upon it in our lives. Because Jesus has shown us the face of God s love and mercy, we need not be afraid of coming face to face with God. It is the Spirit of God dwelling within us that empowers us to do his will without fear, even in difficult or unpopular circumstances. Refusal to listen to and obey the Word of God brings spiritual death. This is not a threat but a biblical reality. The opposite is also a biblical reality. When we hear and act on the Word of God, even when it is difficult or we are afraid, his Word leads us to Christ and gives us spiritual life. One way we can act on the Word of God is to support the Annual Catholic Appeal which begins today. Those people who have donated in the past should have received this year s information in the mail directly from the Archbishop s office. In-pew parish pledging will take place during mass the weekends of February 3-4 and Most of these funds support Catholic education, capital needs for poor parishes, aid to the poor and archdiocesan support ministries. Since we had the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign last year, our target is only 75% of the normal goal. Our reduced goal this year is $ $25,273. All (100%) of the funds above our targeted goal are returned to the parish. Please see the article on page five. I will be participating in the Catholic Leadership 360 Review process this winter. It is part of the ordinary review process that takes place every five years or so for all archdiocesan priests. Part of the process includes the opportunity for all parishioners to provide feedback in a systematic way about my ministry, both strengths and weaknesses, through a simple anonymous survey available on the Archdiocesan website. It should take no more than half an hour. My understanding is that the survey must be completed by February 20 th. I would greatly appreciate your input in this process. The more people who take the survey, the more helpful the feedback. Please see Bishop Manz letter on page eight for his commentary and instructions on how to participate in the review process. Today we began Catholic Schools Week with a special Blessing of the teachers, staff and school board at the 10:00 a.m. mass, followed by an Open House in the gym. All are welcome. There will be several events throughout the week, including the talent Show, Spelling Bee and Science Program. Please see the school website for details. Continued on page two

A Warm Welcome to our New Parishioners Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rau Join fellow parishioners and Deacon Bill as we spend time with Sunday Scriptures: Preparing to hear God s Word Learning more about Scripture Asking what Scripture is saying to me Growing spiritually with others February 1 - Thursday morning 9:15 in Kernaghan Hall O, taste and see the Goodness of the Lord. (Ps. 38) Learn more at our Open House! Sunday, January 28 11:30 am - 2:00 pm. Or find more information at srb-chicago.org Feast of St. Blase St. Blase was a fourth century bishop in Armenia, renowned for his personal holiness and dedication to the physical and spiritual health of his people. He was tortured and beheaded for refusing to sacrifice to pagan idols. Legend has it that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. Because of this miracle of intercession, St. Blase became the patron saint for the healing of throats. Through the intercession of St. Blase, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. His feast day is February 3rd.

5 The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 Dear Parishioners, 2018 Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal Begins Come, Follow Me This year our parish, along with all the other parishes, will again conduct the Annual Catholic Appeal to support the work of the Archdiocese. Because we held the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign last year, our goal is only 75% of the normal Appeal target. Our goal for 2018 is $25,273. We have always exceeded our goal. All (100%) of the excess funds will be been returned directly to the parish. Although we have new furnishings for Kernaghan Hall in the Capital Plan, we would like to raise enough money through this year s Appeal to provide for a much-needed new sound system. This would greatly enhance our enjoyment of the many parish and school events, social and faith formation programs that take place in our parish hall. The 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway. The theme, Come Follow Me, is an invitation to continue the work of Jesus, taking care of one another by using God s gifts to help build his kingdom on earth. Those who have contributed in the past should have received a letter from Archbishop Blase Cupich. In addition, we will be conducting the in-pew pledging process at all the masses over the next two weekends. The Cardinal asks that you make a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please respond generously. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Annual Catholic Appeal also gives funds or support that is of great help here at St. Robert Bellarmine parish. For example, the Annual Catholic Appeal funds or supports: (1) Catechist and Youth Ministry/Young Adult programs and events such as Holy Fire and Theology on Tap; (2) The Annual Parish Leadership Day, which is for every ministry leader, parish pastoral council member, and other parishioners considering a more active role in the life of our parish; (3) The volunteer catechists for the Special Religious Education (SPRED) Program, which is supported by the Archdiocesan SPRED agency by means of curriculum and training that reaches out to, and integrates, teens and young adults with special needs in our parish family; (4) The Lenten Education materials that are used by our school and religious education program students; (5) Continuing education and formation for priests of the Archdiocese. As the theme of this year s Appeal Come, Follow Me reminds us, we each have a responsibility to recognize God s gifts to us and to nurture them. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish, for our Archdiocese, and for the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. As you review the mailing and parish materials from Archbishop Cupich, please note the ministries and services funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal. Note those mentioned above that directly support the work of our parish. Please give generously. When our parish reaches its 2018 goal of $25,273 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received over this goal will be returned to us as a rebate for use in our parish. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
