Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the first reading from the Prophet Jeremiah, God pronounces a curse on the shepherds who have led his people astray, scattered them and not taken care of them. He tells them he will punish their wicked deeds. God promises his people that he himself will bring them to good pastures and will give them shepherds who will care for them. God further promises to raise up a righteous shoot from the house of David to save his people. Jeremiah is giving the people a prophecy of the coming of the Messiah. In his letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul tells us that it is Christ who is our peace, the one who reconciles us both to God and to one another. In the Gospel Jesus invites the apostles to come away to a quiet place to rest after their journeys. However, the people follow them. Upon seeing the weary multitudes, Jesus heart is moved with pity because they are like sheep without a shepherd and he began to teach them many things. Jeremiah 23:1-6 Ephesians 2:13-18 Mark 6: Having Trouble Hearing at Mass? When a person with a hearing loss is in a house of they are often a great distance from any given sound source, and in such a listening they can experience difficulty hearing. Assistive listening devices (ALDs) aid the hearing impaired and expand the of hearing aids and cochlear implants by amplifying the sounds in houses of worship. 3 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk In today s scriptures, we hear the promise of God to take care of his people. This promise extends to all of us today. In Jeremiah, we hear God s promise to send the Messiah to save his people. In Ephesians, we are told that we are reconciled with God through the blood of Christ which brings us peace and salvation. In the gospel, we hear of Jesus compassion. The Prophet Jeremiah, writing at the time of the Babylonian Exile, tells the leaders of his people that God will punish them for being bad shepherds. By misleading the people and ignoring the Covenant, the princes and priests will bring ruin upon the nation, and the people will be scattered to foreign lands. But God promises the people that he will be their shepherd and protect them from evil. The Responsorial Psalm is a beautiful expression of faith in this promise. God also promises that he will send a righteous shoot, a descendant of David to be our savior, bringing peace, justice and security. We see these promises fulfilled in Jesus, who, as St. Paul tells us, is our peace. It is Christ who reconciles us to God and to one another. According to St. Paul, Jesus preaches peace that will put enmity to death and give us access to the Holy Spirit. Christ offers us the possibility of reconciliation to God through his own blood so that we might experience his peace, allowing peace to reign in our hearts. The Holy Spirit enables us to overcome our own hatred so that we can be reconciled to one another. Only then can we take advantage of the Atonement of Christ and be reconciled with God. In the gospel, we see Jesus moved with pity for the crowds because they are like sheep without a shepherd. Like the leaders of Jeremiah's time, the leaders have been unfaithful to the Covenant and have led the people astray. Jesus seeks to bring them back, so he began to teach them many things. Before he feeds or heals them, Jesus teaches them. He proclaims to them the good news of God s love and calls them to the Covenant, to love God with all their hearts and to love their neighbor as themselves. This is the freedom and peace that St. Paul talks about in the second reading. Today we are reminded that we have seen the fulfillment of the promise of the Old Covenant. Therefore we can believe and trust in the words of the one who spoke them. If we believe the word of God and if we want the promise to come to fruition in our lives, we must trust the Holy Sprit to guide us in the way of peace with God and with all those from whom we are divided. Practically speaking, it is our response to God s love by living as Christ taught (in loving God and neighbor, living the Beatitudes and obeying the Commandments) which is the evidence of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, uniting us to God in this life and, we hope, in the next. Cardinal Cupich has asked all the priests and their key parish staff and council members to attend a two-day Divine Renovation workshop on evangelization connected with Renew My Church. A maximum of six people per parish (including the priests) will gather in Rosemont (October 1-2) to explore ways to bring new energy to the life of our parishes. We will be studying and discussing this project over the summer in preparation for the workshop. Thanks to all the volunteers who came out on Saturday, June 30 to help with the new Learning Garden. In spite of being one of the hottest afternoons of the year, much was accomplished on the grounds and building the various learning stations. Thanks also to Kim Nigro and James Ouper for leading the project. Our new principal, Deanne Roy, has been with us for three weeks now, interviewing for a new assistant principal and staff replacements, as well as familiarizing herself with the school and its operations. Thank you to Chris Wilson, Steve Powrozek and the teachers who have been her advisory committee to help her in the transition process. Meanwhile, Wayne and Jeremy (maintenance staff) have been working hard to get the school fixed and ready for the new year. The new school family reception will be held on August 13 and classes start on August 20. The summer will be over before we know it. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

6 Page 6 July 22, 2018 Meet Deanne Roy, New St. Robert Bellarmine Principal After 16 years as principal of St. Thomas the Apostle School in Crystal Lake, Deanne Roy has returned to her roots on Chicago s Northwest side to guide our St. Robert Bellarmine community as its new principal. I grew up in this neighborhood! I feel so blessed to be back here. The timing was just right as all three of my sons were off to college. Ms. Roy holds a BA degree in Communications from DePaul, a Master s from National Louis University, and started her PhD in curriculum administration at Northern Illinois University. She has three sons, 19, 22, and 26. She also has 15 years of experience in the classroom teaching at both St. Thomas and public schools out in Woodstock, IL and at St. Eugene s here in Chicago, where she first began her career. Ms. Roy has developed certain values after many years in Catholic education. Faith is #1. I think every Catholic school can grow in their faith. Other values include a strong educational foundation and building a sense of family and community, which starts and ends at home. I ve learned as an administrator that parents are the first and primary educators and faith instillers of their children. We can only do so much from 8 to 3:00 and need the parents to be our partners in both. Ms. Roy prides herself on being open and honest in communications with parents, and to always listen to their valuable opinions. This first year at St. Robert Bellarmine will be a learning experience as she settles in to learn about our great school and community. I like the energy I m seeing! I m excited to see a lot of parent involvement. I hope to maintain all the great things about St. Roberts including its strong enrollment and dedicated staff. There are many great traditions here that I hope to keep alive and well. But change is a good thing, too, and Ms. Roy is tasked with filling 8 open staff positions with vetted and qualified new hires that will bring fresh perspectives and breathe new life into our school. I m not going to fix what s not broken and will spend much of this first year observing and getting feedback from the pastor, staff, and school families. Any changes will be strategic and rolled out over time. While her official start date was July 1, Deanne Roy still hopes to spend some time this summer where she is happiest: outdoors. Whether hiking, fishing, or out on the boat on Lake Marie, she loves to be with family in nature. She considers herself lucky to be able to spend more time back in her neighborhood and in the same building as her mother. She s gotten older so my mom and I watch over each other. If my boys decide to come back after college, we have room. I m sure I am hoping for that more than they are. Run with the Nuns Runners and Walkers Welcome Race day Sunday, October 14, 2018 beginning at 6:30 AM. Run with the Nuns is a race through natural hills and picturesque scenery of Mount Assisi and the Mount Assisi Convent (13860 Main St, Lemont, IL 60439). This challenging all-terrain course features a variety of surfaces from asphalt to grass. All participants will receive a race medal and a dry-fit shirt. Registration fee is $40 for adults. Registration on the day of the race is $45 cash or check only. The cost is ONLY $20.00 for children 12 and under who walk or run with a parent. Shirt sizes are guaranteed only for registrations received before September 20, After September 20th, your shirt size may not be available. 7 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 Be an angel! Make a difference! The Dominican Literacy Center is in great need of women volunteers for its session, which begins this September. This program offers tutoring in speaking, writing, and reading of English to immigrant women in the Melrose Park area. It is unique in that it offers tutoring on a one-to-one basis (one student with one tutor). A time commitment of 1 and1/2 hours per week is all that is necessary. Classes are held at the Dominican Literacy Center, which is located on the 2 nd floor at 1503 Rice St (in Sacred Heart Parish, in Melrose Park). Four consecutive and informative training sessions will be held on the evenings of Aug. 14 (Tuesday), Aug.16 (Thursday), Aug.20 (Monday), and Aug.22 (Wednesday). Each training session (held at the Dominican Literacy Center) will begin at 6:30pm. Participants need to attend ALL four sessions. We are looking for a few good persons to deliver meals and help to ensure our seniors can remain at home. Can you help? Meals are prepared fresh each morning and ready to be picked up at 10:30 a.m. at 1717 Rand Road, Des Plaines. Each route has around 12 to 16 clients and takes no more than 2 hours to complete.
