III Katherine Hill and Bart Sieka III Carolyn Guy and Michael Labalestra A WARM WELCOME TO OUR NEW PARISHIONERS The Matlock family Ms. Julie Diaz THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Today s Scriptures relate the sacrifices offered to God to make peace for the sins of humanity. In the reading from the Book of Exodus Moses reads to them the commandments of the Lord given in the Book of the Covenant. The people reply that they will listen and obey all that the Lord has commanded them. After this Moses takes the blood, which was considered to be the source of life, of sacrificed bulls and sprinkled it on the people signifying the covenant with God. The Letter to the Hebrews tells of the New Covenant which is the only sacrifice that can truly sanctify those who have sinned. It is only through Christ, the eternal high priest who offers to God his own blood, that humanity can be cleansed and receive eternal redemption. This is dramatically portrayed in Mark s gospel as Jesus meets with his disciples in the upper room to eat the Passover lamb immediately before his Passion. Our Lord reveals the new and everlasting Covenant: that he himself is the sacrificial lamb and mediator between God and humanity. Jesus took the bread and gave it to them declaring: this is my body; and, after giving them the cup this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for you and for the many so that sins may be forgiven. Exodus 24: 3-8 Hebrews 9: Mark 14: 12-16, THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS AND THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus refers to the whole mystery of the Incarnation and Christ s immense love for the Father and for us. When we meditate upon Jesus heart we think of how he loves us beyond any love we can imagine. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a symbol of that love. This devotion expresses the Church s beautiful historical piety for Christ and calls us to conversion and penance, love and gratitude for Christ s sacrifice on our behalf. The real human beating heart of Christ echoes in the Immaculate Heart of Mary, his mother. Mary as mother and as disciple enjoys a unique relationship with Christ. She participated like no other could have in humanity s salvation. The memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary celebrates this unique relationship between Son and Mother and the extraordinary greatness to which Mary fulfilled her role. Mary in an immaculate way was conformed to the will of God the Father. She was detached from the desires of the world and self-love and separated herself entirely from sin. Through her own free will Mary was submissive and abandoned herself perfectly to the designs of God. The ancient devotion to Mary s Immaculate Heart moves us to reflect on Mary s interior life and virtues, drawing us closer to God.

3 The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. This celebration reminds us how much God loves us. The Father is willing to sacrifice his only Son. Jesus gives his life for us and sends us the Holy Spirit so that we can experience his forgiveness and share in his divine life. At the end of last week s gospel Jesus promised to remain with us to the end of the age. The Eucharist is the fulfillment of that promise. In today s gospel we hear St. Mark s version of the Last Supper. At the Passover Feast the night before his death, Jesus gives us the new Covenant. Jesus takes the bread and the cup, blesses them and gives them to his disciples, proclaiming it to be his very body and blood, poured out for our salvation. The Jewish Feast of Passover commemorates their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. Commemoration is more than a remembrance. In a mystical way the Jewish people believe that they participate in that deliverance every time they celebrate Passover. For all Christians, the passion of Christ is our deliverance from slavery to sin and death. At the Last Supper Jesus institutes the Eucharist as the commemoration of his passion. In a mystical way, we too, participate in Christ s death and resurrection every time we celebrate the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the heart of our faith. Many people believe that the Eucharist is simply a reminder of Jesus, or at best a spiritual communion with Jesus or a symbolic gesture of our unity as believers. Many others don t see how it makes any difference. This truly is a tragedy. Flannery O Connor once wrote concerning the Eucharist If it s just a symbol, then to hell with it. The martyrs of the early church wrote Without the Eucharist we cannot live. We would certainly still have our physical life. But without the faith and grace of the Eucharist our spiritual life is diminished and the image of Christ in which we are made will disappear (literally rot away in the words of St. Athanasius). We need to be drawn back into this mystery of our faith, the greatest gift we can receive, our Lord himself. Thank you to our School Board members who hosted the Coffee and Donuts last Sunday. Thank you to all who have hosted throughout the year. This event will go on hiatus for the summer and will resume in September. We will begin the next construction phase of our Capital Campaign tomorrow, Monday June 11, with the replacement of the school roofs. We will also be replacing the vinyl floor tiles in the junior building of the school, giving it a bright, new look that should last for many years to come. All the funds are already in the bank through the capital campaign donations (new roofs) and from bequests and gifts (flooring). We also received a very generous donation from a former parishioner that will allow us to replace the gym floor with a brand new, state-of the-art wooden floor that should last another fifty years or more. I hope to have more details in the near future. The Church celebrates two special feasts this week. The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is this Friday and the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is this Saturday. See page two for more details. Our second collection today is for the Chicago Priests Retirement and Medical Fund. The pension fund has taken a beating recently. Combined with soaring medical costs, this has caused a financial crisis for our retired priests. Thank you for your continued generosity. The annual Parish Calendar Meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 19 at 7 pm in Kernaghan Hall. Leaders of parish ministries and organizations please bring your calendars. Any other requests for use of the parish facilities should be submitted in writing to Ginny, our parish secretary. Father Matt Feit will be with us again this summer. He will be arriving on June 27th. He is a good friend and a great storyteller. It is always good to see him and I look forward to his visit. Next Sunday is Father Day. Although my own father passed away nineteen years ago, he was a wonderful presence in my life and he continues to be an important influence today. Let us celebrate the influence of these men and all those who have been mentors and role models for us throughout the years. There will be a special blessing for our fathers next weekend at all the masses. Have a great week and a wonderful summer. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION HE IS PHYSICALLY WITH US When Jesus told the apostles that He would be with the Church even to the end of time, He not only meant this in a spiritual sense but also in a physical sense. Jesus knew man and his weaknesses. He knew that without His close physical association with man, we would falter and stray. The institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper was not for just the moment but it was His gift to us by staying with us physically through time. The Council of Trent in 1545 confirmed that not only was the Holy Eucharist to be received, it was also to be worshipped and adored. This document also stated that the Blessed Sacrament should also be reserved in churches and carried to the sick. In other words, Jesus was to be with us at all times-----in the Churches, at the Masses, and even in our homes or hospitals when we are sick. Conversely, Jesus has given us an opportunity to be with Him at all times. On Wednesday s the Church is open for Adoration from 9 am - 5 pm. Jesus is there in The Real Presence, exposed to us, not in His glory, but in a quiet way, ready to listen to us and to spread His Blessings upon us. He is willing to be with us as He promised. Are we willing to be with Him or are we too busy? There, now, I have found the whole secret of it: the unconditional self to Our Lord. (St. Peter Julian Eymard)

5 The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ Page 5 There is no other way to say it CATECHISTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR! How can our rich intellectual and spiritual traditions be passed down to the young people of our parish? Who will teach the children s hearts and minds what it means to be Catholic? We need you! The St. Robert s Religious Education Program needs you! You can team-teach with a friend or spouse, you can teach on your own. You do not have to be a professional teacher, experience helps; but is not necessary, and there are trained individuals, other catechists and myself to help you. Training is offered beginning in late August and goes throughout the year. The program needs: 1 Second grade catechist (our class is growing) 1 Seventh grade catechist to team teach 1 Eighth grade catechist Whether you are single or married, with or without children, old or young, it is everyone s responsibility. Why wait for someone else to volunteer? Why don t you be the first one to pick up the phone and call? The Religious Education Program also needs VOLUNTEERS to assist with things that come up throughout the year (social events, retreats for the children, activities). If you are interested or have any questions please contact: Debi DeMario at or SRBRE1@YAHOO.COM MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST As we think of the significance of the gift of Christ s Body and Blood our response can only be joyful thanksgiving! Is God calling you to bring that joyful praise to the world through priesthood or religious life? For information about diocesan priesthood contact Fr. Brian Welter at or at bwelter@archchicago.org or go to For info on religious life contact Sr. Elyse Ramirez, OP at or eramirez@archchicago.org, For the Permanent Diaconate program contact Deacon Bob Puhala at or bpuhala@usml.edu.
