Please pray for our Sick Ted Agustyn, George Vail, Nicky Owens, Katherine Wagner, Gina Brettman Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord This last Sunday of Lent we hear two gospel readings, both of which describe the climactic events in the life of the Son of God. In the opening gospel St. Matthew describes Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The people shout out with joy, praising God for the mighty deeds that they have seen, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. They expect him to be, like King David, a conquering hero, one who will throw off the yoke of Roman domination. It is precisely out of fear of the Romans that the whole city was shaken and asked who he might be. It seems like the people s great joy cannot be contained. But in less than a week they will turn on him. We read in Matthew s Passion narrative that Jesus is abandoned by the very people he came to save. Judas betrays him; the disciples leave him and flee; the religious leaders falsely accuse him as deserving to die; the soldiers mock him and spit on him; Pilate knowingly condemns an innocent man; and the crowds, who welcomed him so warmly a few days earlier, call for the release of the convicted murderer Barabbas, yelling for Jesus to be crucified. The prophet Isaiah, writing six hundred years earlier, describes this suffering servant who speaks for God and who will ultimately triumph, but nevertheless is rejected by all. St. Paul describes Jesus as equal to God (revealing the early Church s belief in Christ s divinity), and yet he took the form of a slave...he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death. For his obedience, Jesus is the glory of God, who all people in heaven and on earth and under the earth will confess as Lord. Matthew 21:1-11 Isaiah 50:4-7 Philippians 2:6-11 Matthew 26:44 27:66 The Easter Triduum The Triduum, Latin for Three Days, is the most sacred time in the life of the Church. These three days, consisting of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, the Passion of the Lord on Good Friday and the Resurrection of Jesus at the Easter Vigil are really one continuous celebration of the salvific work of Christ. The tremendous event that makes possible our individual salvation takes us on a roller coaster ride of emotional highs and lows. As we begin Holy Week with Palm Sunday, we witness Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The people are delirious with joy as they see the longawaited Messiah enter his royal city. On Holy Thursday Jesus celebrates the Last Supper, both a great feast and an announcement of his coming death. He is celebrating the Passover, the Hebrew participation in God s deliverance of his people from slavery in Egypt. Jesus institutes the Eucharist, his continuing presence in his Church. On this day we read John s gospel, which has no institution narrative. Instead, Jesus washes the feet of his disciples. At first this is a scandal to them; but Jesus teaches them that in order to follow the Christ they must empty themselves in service to others. This is exactly what he does the following day on the Cross. Good Friday sounds like an oxymoron since we celebrate Christ s Passion. Jesus, innocent and without sin, suffers cruel torture and death as a criminal. But it is precisely in this self-emptying and taking on the nature of human sin that Jesus brings God s mercy and forgiveness to the human race. Good Friday, in the depths of its tragedy, reveals to us the fathomless goodness of God. Jesus enters into the tomb, and at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday he conquers evil. His glorious Resurrection destroys sin and death forever.
3 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate Passion Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, the most sacred time of the year. This is the only day of the year in which we hear two gospels. These two gospels could not be more different. The entrance gospel describes Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem, with the crowds crying Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!, shouting for joy at the coming of the Messiah, spreading their cloaks on the road before him. The gospel of the day is the reading of the Passion, Jesus betrayal and crucifixion. The two gospels reflect our own divided nature. We have faith, we believe in the salvation of the Lord, we trust in his love, and we would like to be better people, reflecting the goodness in which we were created. At the same time, there is a side to our nature which is self-absorbed, and self-reliant. We look to the values of the world for security and self esteem because a part of us does not trust in the Lord nor believe in the value of self-denial as the road to sanctification. But a closer reading of the gospel gives us hope. Jesus goes to the cross without condemning either his accusers or his friends who denied him. The Lord s treatment of Peter and Peter s conversion are the greatest hope for ourselves. Jesus tells Peter that his faith will be shaken and he, too, will abandon him. Peter declares that though others faith may be shaken, his will never be. Jesus prophecies that before the cock crows Peter will deny him three times. Peter does deny him three times. And when the cock crows, he realizes his betrayal and weeps bitterly. This is the great hope for all of us. Peter s weeping is the sign of his conversion, his recognition that he indeed is in need of grace. It is only when he admits his weakness that the grace of God is able to enter in. And, of course, we know the rest of the story. Jesus is resurrected and Peter is given the keys to the kingdom. This forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit is available to us as well. We often fail, but God s forgiveness is always available to allow us to get up and go on. All we have to do is accept our weakness and trust that God s grace is enough. St. Paul s letter to the Philippians quotes an ancient Christological hymn that affirms the divinity of Christ and proclaims that God himself took on our human nature, humbling himself as a slave and being obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this God highly exalted him and all are to profess him as Lord. It is through obedience and self-denial that Jesus is able to conquer sin and obtain for us salvation. It is our own obedience and self-denial that gains us a share in his exaltation in heaven. The Church will be closed during the first part of the week for preparations and rehearsals for the Triduum services, except for morning mass and funerals. The Triduum will begin on Holy Thursday, April 17th, with morning prayer at 8:30. We will celebrate the mass of the Lord s Supper at 7 pm, concluding with a Eucharistic Procession. The church will remain open until midnight for Adoration and quiet prayer. On Good Friday, April 18th, the church will open at noon for private prayer. Living Stations of the Cross will be celebrated at 3 pm. The celebration of the Passion of the Lord will begin at 7 pm, concluding with the Veneration of the Cross and distribution of Holy Communion. On Holy Saturday, April 19th, the Blessing of the Easter food baskets will take place at 1 p.m. downstairs in Kernaghan Hall. The Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited and encouraged to join us in these most holy celebrations of our faith. Please note that no other masses, not even funerals, are permitted on these three days. Our Easter Sunday masses will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Our collection on Holy Thursday will benefit the Alexian Brothers in their ministry to those in the Chicago area suffering with HIV/AIDS. The collection on Good Friday will benefit the Franciscans in the Holy Land in the upkeep of Christian shrines and churches. Our second collection today will be for our Easter Flowers. The rectory office will close at 2:30 p.m. on Good Friday for the Holy Days and will not reopen until 8:30 a.m. Easter Monday, April 21st. Have a blessed Holy Week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are between 18 years and 59 1/2 years of age. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. This Week in Lent Individual Reconciliation April 12 Saturday 4:00-4:45 pm in the Church Lent is an intense moment of the Church s penitential practice. The celebration of Reconciliation is an integral part of prayer, fasting and almsgiving that shape our humility. 6 Page 6 April 13, 2014 GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION Christians around the world are united in a special way during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Our hearts, minds and prayers are also especially aware of the Holy Land. Our parish, once a year on Good Friday, is called on to support Christians in the Holy Land. Many Christians in the Holy Land depend on the collection for their lives. As a pontifical collection requested by Pope Francis, the annual Good Friday Collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. When you donate on Good Friday, you are supporting Christians in the Holy Land. The Good Friday Collection is requested by the Holy Father. Please be as generous as your abundance allows. PLEASE NOTE THE UPCOMING SCHEDULE CHANGES There will be NO Novena on Tuesday, April 15. The Church will be closed after the morning mass on Wednesday, April 16. The Rectory Office will close at 2:30pm on Good Friday, April 18 and reopen at 8:30 am on Monday, April 21. The Easter Vigil Mass will be at 7 pm on Saturday, April 19. There will be NO 5 pm Mass on that date. There will be NO 5:30pm Contemporary Mass on Easter Sunday, April 20th. Easter Greeting Easter is coming... Wouldn't it be grand if we could personally welcome EACH PERSON who will be attending Easter Sunday Mass here at St. Robert Bellarmine Church? Which Mass will you attend? Take a moment now to consider being a greeter at one of our church entrances on that holiest of days. Be the welcoming presence of the St. Robert Bellarmine community at an Easter Sunday Mass. All proceeds go to the school, Thank you. RELIGIOUS ITEMS WANTED FOR UGANDA During this Lent there are collection containers in St. Robert Bellarmine s vestibules for you to donate new or used religious items that will be donated to the rural village of Bunnamweri, which is located in south central Uganda and west of the capital Kampala. This village has a very religious population. The village is improving its access to clean and safe water, education, and general health services; it is promoting the Catholic faith in small Christian communities. The religious items being collected during March and April for this rural village can be new or used. They can be holy cards, religious medals, general prayer books, prayer books for the Stations of the Cross, rosaries, and religious statues. Please do not donate prayer cards related to funerals, because the people are not familiar with these. Since Uganda is a former colony of Great Britain, the people speak and read English in addition to their own local languages; they do not understand other languages commonly spoken in our community. Please do not donate items that need to be played on an electronic device due to the shortage of electricity in their area. Your donation of new or used religious items for this rural village in Uganda is one way of performing almsgiving during Lent this year. Thank you for your support. WELCOME TO ST.
