In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, God surprises everyone by revealing that his salvation is open not only to the Jewish people, but to everyone. St. Peter is told, through a vision, to go to the house of Cornelius, a Gentile. When Peter enters the home and Cornelius falls at his feet, Peter understands the vision that God had sent him to slaughter and eat animals he previously thought unclean. Now no one is unclean: St. Peter exclaims, In truth, I see God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. The first Letter of John contains the simplest, but most stirring description of God for us: God is love.. We come to know God through our love for others. The gospel of John today is also simple and straightforward. As Jesus kept his Father s commandments and remains in him; so must we keep Jesus commandments in order to keep his divine life alive within us. His commandment is to love one another, even to the point of laying down one s life for one s friends. Jesus tells us these things so that his joy may be in us and our joy might be complete. Acts 10: 25-26, 34-35, John 4: 7-10 John 15: 9-17 MARY AND MOTHER S DAY In the month of May we honor the Blessed Mother and in a special way make extra time and prayer for our devotional life. These devotions remind us of Mary s yes to God that made possible the birth of Christ in our human nature. The motherhood of Mary confirms the full humanity of Christ in the Incarnation, sanctifying our human family. In his wonderful encyclical Marialis Cultus Pope Paul VI puts forth a beautiful understanding of our teachings about Mary and her role in the lives of the faithful. Pope Paul reminds us that we venerate and honor Mary for her role in salvation and for the love that she had for God. It was God s will that she become the Mother of his only Son and that she nurture and support him throughout his earthly life. Therefore it is only right that she be honored above all others. Mary continues to intercede for all her children and be our guardian and protectress. A mother s work is never done! So today we also honor our mothers for all they have done for us in imitation of Christ and Mary. No matter how old we get, mom is still mom. Their love and sacrifice for us throughout our lives, their generosity and care, often get taken for granted. Today we want to recognize them and to say what often goes unsaid: Thanks, Mom!

3 6th Sunday of Easter Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter. The scriptures not only remind us of God s love for us; but also tell us how this love ignites and transforms us. In the gospel Jesus tells the apostles that he loves them with the same love that the Father has for him. This love is nothing less than sharing in the fullness of God s own divine life. In order to remain in that love the disciples are told that they must obey his commandments and love one another. Jesus tells them that there is no greater love than to lay down one s life for one s friends. He is telling them this as he prepares to go to the Cross to lay down his own life for all of us. If we want a share in God s kingdom then we must be willing to imitate Christ s sacrifice as well. Jesus tells the apostles that he has chosen them and appointed them to bear fruit that will remain. Jesus is referring to the building of his body (the community of faith) by living in imitation of Christ himself. By our demonstration of unselfish love, living the virtue of charity, we show to others the face of God s love. St. John tells us to love one another because love is of God; and if we love, then we will know God. Not that we have loved God, but that he has loved us and sent his Son as an expiation of our sins. God loved us first. God has given us the possibility of sharing in his life through the blood of Christ. If we want to accept God s forgiveness (the choice is ours alone), then we must reciprocate in loving God by loving one another. Can we love others first; acting in charity and forgiveness before they deserve it? Paraphrasing St. John; in this is love; not that they have loved us, but that we have loved them and have ourselves been an expiation for their sins by sacrificing ourselves for their good. Happy Mother s Day and God s Blessings to all the wonderful women who have meant so much to us. I am truly blessed that my mother is active and healthy. Let s take time to show our love and gratitude to our moms, grandmothers and step-mothers. In this month when we honor Mary we are reminded of the special place that mothers have in our hearts. My sympathies go out to all who have lost their mother and for whom this day brings only a reminder of that loss. May God grant you peace and consolation as you remember the great gift of your mother s love. We will have a special Mother s Day blessing at all the masses today. Mothers Day Flowers are on sale today after all the masses. These beautiful flowers make a wonderful gift. All proceeds will go to support the work of the Women s Center to help families in crisis pregnancy and promote the dignity of all human life. Our second collection today is for Catholic Charities to help needy families throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Thank you all for your continued generosity. Thank you to Ed Stecker and the members of the Welcome Wagon for hosting the New Parishioner Dinner this past Monday. We had over forty people, coming together to share a meal and to celebrate our faith community. The crowd was so large that we had to move into the Parish Hall for the first time. Our parish is truly a wonderfully warm and hospitable community. May Crowning was celebrated this past Friday. I always enjoy this wonderful devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It contains so many traditions of the living faith of our people Scripture, rosary, Benediction, processions and hymns. I really love to see the children learn the richness of our tradition and come to appreciate our Blessed Mother in her unique personal relationship with Christ and with each of us. Fr. Mike will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of his Ordination to the priesthood next Saturday, May 19, at the 5 p.m. mass at St. Bartholomew. I am grateful to Fr. Pawel Zemzcak, the associate at St Pascal, who has graciously volunteered to celebrate our evening mass so that I can join Fr. Mike for this special occasion. All parishioners are invited. Also on Saturday, the Sports Association will host the annual Comedy Nite, featuring entertainment by Global Giggles and food from Smokey s Barbecue. Doors open at 6 p.m. This event is always a lot of fun. Details are on page seven. Next Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. This Holy Day commemorates Christ s triumphant return to his heavenly throne, opening the gates of paradise to all his faithful people. 5 6th Sunday of Easter Page 5 COMMUNITY SPIRIT GARDEN UPDATE Our Community Spirit Garden project is underway. The city has approved funds to have the land made fit for gardening and the construction of a new fence. Planning meetings will be held in Kernaghan Hall on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7 p.m. Our next meeting will be May 21st. Join us in our "growing endeavor" as we start the design process. Now that the weather is warming up and you are looking at changing your landscape, cleaning out the garage or shed, please consider recycling your tools, stone and garden supplies. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Religious Education Registration has begun for the students returning for classes in September. Please return your forms and fees as soon as possible by mail, in the Sunday collection basket or on Sunday, May 20 in the vestibule before and after the 10 a.m. Family mass. Religious Education Director, Debi DeMario, will be available to meet you and answer any questions you might have and to help with registration after the Family Mass on Sunday, May 20. She will be in the vestibule of the church before and after mass and would like to get to know you. LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I LOVE YOU. Helping others by donating to Catholic Charities has become an important part of the Mother s Day celebration at this parish. Contributions can still be made online at or mailed to 721 N. 6 Page 6 May 13, 2012 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION HE IS PHYSICALLY WITH US When Jesus told the apostles that He would be with the Church even to the end of time, He not only meant this in a spiritual sense but also in a physical sense. Jesus knew man and his weaknesses. He knew that without His close physical association with man, we would falter and stray. The institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper was not for just the moment but it was His gift to us by staying with us physically through time. The Council of Trent in 1545 confirmed that not only was the Holy Eucharist to be received, it was also to be worshipped and adored. This document also stated that the Blessed Sacrament should also be reserved in churches and carried to the sick. In other words, Jesus was to be with us at all times-----in the Churches, at the Masses, and even in our homes or hospitals when we are sick. Conversely, Jesus has given us an opportunity to be with Him at all times. On Wednesday s the Church is open for Adoration from 9 am - 5 pm. Jesus is there in The Real Presence, exposed to us, not in His glory, but in a quiet way, ready to listen to us and to spread His Blessings upon us. He is willing to be with us as He promised. Are we willing to be with Him or are we too busy? There, now, I have found the whole secret of it: the unconditional self to Our Lord.
