Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the reading from the prophet Isaiah, the Lord commands his people to share their bread with the hungry, to shelter the homeless, to clothe the naked and care for the oppressed. To those who obey his commands, the Lord promises to protect and to answer their prayers when they cry out to him. God s promise of salvation is given to those who obey his commands. They will be wrapped in the glory of the Lord and all will see their light shining in the darkness. St. Paul proclaims the mystery of God, the revelation of salvation in Christ Jesus. Paul tells them his proclamation is not made with persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Holy Spirit and power so that their faith might rest, not on human wisdom, but on the power of God. Jesus continues the Sermon on the Mount with the symbols of salt and light. He compares the disciples to the salt of the earth, salt that is used to flavor and preserve food. If the salt loses its taste then it is no longer any good. If the disciples do not live as Jesus has taught them, then their teaching loses its value. He also calls his disciples the light of the world. The lamp is put on a stand to give light to the entire house, not to be hidden under a basket. The disciples are to let their light shine so that others may see their good deeds and glorify God. Isaiah 58: Corinthians 2:1-5 Matthew 5:13-16 On Friday, February 21st Saint Robert Bellarmine will host a blood drive from 1 pm 5 pm in Kernaghan Hall. Due to holidays and the inclement weather Heartland is in urgent need of blood products for the 49 hospitals they support. We are asking that you take time from your schedule to help save a life. All donors will receive coupons from Corner Bakery at Village Crossing for a free drink, free soup, and a free sweet with purchase as well as points towards merchandise in Heartland s Warm Hearts Club. To schedule an appointment call Amy at or at azagroba@heartlandbc.org. To schedule yourself online go to Appointments preferred but walk-ins are always welcome! All donors need to have a photo ID to donate.

3 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures call us to live our faith in concrete deeds and actions. God promises salvation for those who do. Of course, it is not our actions that earn us salvation, but that our good deeds are evidence of the life of God within us. The first reading occurs after the Israelites had returned to the promised land after their captivity in Babylon. God is promising them a new start. Basically, God is asking them to get it right this time. The Lord asks his people to fulfill the Covenant by works of justice. Sharing their bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless and clothing the naked are the concrete ways that God insists are the signs of those who possess his Spirit. These are the ones Jesus refers to as seeking after righteousness who are given the kingdom of heaven. In his very poetic way, Isaiah tells the people that your light will break forth like the dawn, vindication will go before you and the glory of the Lord will be your rearguard. If they keep God s commands then the Lord will be with them to protect them and to heal them in their time of need. Having just returned from their second (!) exile, Isaiah is exhorting them to get it right this time. The delivery from exile by a Persian (pagan) king is what St. Paul refers to as a demonstration of the Holy Spirit and the power of God. Jesus puts it quite simply in the portion of the Sermon on the Mount that we hear today. He uses the similes (literary comparisons) of salt and light to tell the disciples that they must live out the faith and teachings that he has given them. They are to be salt, adding flavor and preserving the life of God within them, so that others can taste the goodness of the Lord. They are to let their light shine so that all may see the glory of God in their good deeds. We are all called to be the light of Christ, living our faith in concrete ways that others may experience God s love through us. Through baptism we are made living Christs and are given the responsibility to imitate Jesus through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, through compassion and forgiveness, through self-sacrifice and love for others. Who we are as children of light should be apparent (made manifest) by what we do. Recently we were visited by the state inspector for school recertification (a process that recurs every seven years or so). The good news is that the inspector was extremely complimentary. She was effusive in her praise of our students, the faculty, the organization of our files, policies and procedures as well as how clean and well-maintained we keep our school buildings. Thank you to Mrs. Mijal and all the faculty and staff for a wonderful job. It is nice to be recognized publicly for the quality of our school. We can all be very proud of our parish school. The School Volunteer Appreciation Party was held last Friday. It was a fun time, a chance to socialize with faculty and volunteers. But most importantly, simply a time to celebrate who we are as a community without any other purpose or goal. Thank you to all the teachers and faculty who hosted this wonderful evening to honor all those who have devoted much time and talent to support our school. And, or course, my gratitude to all of our parents and volunteers who dedicate themselves to our school community. On Friday, February 21st, St Robert Bellarmine is hosting a Blood Drive in response to the current blood supply shortage. Please refer to page 2 of the bulletin for more details. The Parents Association will host their school family Carnival Night this Tuesday. The Confirmation Retreat will be held this Wednesday. Please keep all our candidates, their families and sponsors in your prayers. The Annual Catholic Appeal begins next weekend. The pledge process will take place the following two weekends, February and March 1-2. Most of these funds support Catholic education, capital needs for poor parishes, aid to the poor and archdiocesan support ministries. This year the finance committee and I have decided that we would like to add our own capital needs to the appeal. I will have an article about this in next week s bulletin. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

6 Page 6 February 9, 2014 Martha Grieashamer featured in the Chicago Tribune PEN PALS: PROFILES OF TRIBUNE LETTER WRITERS Writing letters since: The great Chicago blizzard of 1967 and the race riots of 1968 (more than 15 published pieces in the Tribune). Life Story in 50 words or less: Born and raised in Chicago's Jefferson Park; graduated from Steinmetz High School in Worked for close to 25 years at Bankers Life and Casualty, as well as at her church, St. Robert Bellarmine. She has participated in community outreach at Mercy Home. Now retired, focusing on writing. Self-description: "I'm a happy person. I like to be active. I'm an animal lover." She lives with her pet parrot, Ozzy, also known as "Screaming as Jesus" for his shrill voice. She reads and writes avidly. Her current favorite book is Maureen McCormick's (formerly Marcia on "The Brady Bunch") "Here's the Story; Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Voice." But she is a writer first and foremost and likes to voice her opinion on issues close to her heart, like Chicago Public Schools and the Cubs. She finds it offensive that the mayor criticizes CPS but sends his own children to private schools. Writing experiences: Besides her regular letters to the Tribune, Grieashamer has also been working on a book since she was 15 years old. "I'm working on what they call the great American novel," she explained. The story focuses on a troubled family with multiple children, one of whom burns her eyes out in a chemistry lab accident. Unique trait: Grieashamer believes a good letter to the editor "makes a point," and enters into conversation with current news topics or other letters. She enjoys submitting online after years of writing by hand. "I get words in my head and I have to write something, and once I get on the computer, it just flows. I don't even have to think about it half the time; it just comes." Wednesday, February 12 4 pm - 10 pm Dine in or carry out--just say SRB and Joe's will donate 10% of your order to our school. 9 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 9 Dear SRB Community, The St. Robert Bellarmine Sports Board The SRB Sports Board is currently looking for a new board member; one of our two vacant spots has already been filled! We welcome parents, alumni, grandparents, parishioners and other community members to our Board. We currently have the immediate need to replace a very hard working, passionate, and dedicated individual. This individual will be with us until the end of the school year; however, they would be willing to begin transitioning their duties to a new board member in preparation for the upcoming school year. While we are always looking for members with a variety of skills, our immediate need is for an individual with very specific skills and responsibilities. The Database Manager position has already been filled! The second position we are actively looking to fill is for a Sports Awards Manager. This position will manage the sports awards using a database, and help to coordinate, with the support of the entire Board, our Sports Awards Banquet. This position also requires knowledge and use of Excel, a high level of organization and great attention to detail. Our team hosts a variety of fundraisers and events throughout the year. We work very hard as a team to give our students the opportunity to participate in a great interscholastic sports program. Without our volunteer Sports Board, our student athletes would not have the opportunities they do. We are hoping to fill this position as soon as possible. If you feel you have these skills and are interested in joining SRB s Sports Board please contact us at srbsportsassoc@gmail.com. Please consider joining our team! Sincerely, The SRB Sports Board SAINT PATRICK HIGH SCHOOL cordially invites you to gather with family, friends and classmates at the Shamrock Green & Gold Dinner Auction on Saturday, March 1, 2014 Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Hall 1340 West Washington Boulevard Registration Now Available For questions or info, contact Patti Fabrizio pfabrizio@stpatrick.org (773) x 257
