Our apologies and our congratulations go to: Matthew Raymond and Samantha Stefanski Second Sunday of Easter In this reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the early church community devoted themselves to the teaching of the faith, to the breaking of the bread, the communal life and prayers. The people praised God and enjoyed the favor of the entire community. In his first letter, St. Peter recalls God s great mercy, granting the faithful an imperishable inheritance through the resurrection of Christ Jesus. He tells his followers to rejoice in this; for although they may have to face trials at the present time, they will attain faith s goal: the salvation of their souls. In today s gospel passage, Jesus enters into the upper room, in his first post-resurrection appearance, and bids peace to his disciples. He shows them the marks on his hands and side to prove it is really he. Jesus breathes on the disciples, imparting to them the Holy Spirit. Thomas, who was absent, does not believe the others when they tell him the good news. Jesus appears the following week, greeting them again with peace. He shows himself to Thomas, who believes and worships the Risen Lord. Acts 2: Peter 1:3-9 John 20:19-31 Divine Mercy Sunday Our Christian faith really is all about mercy, the mercy of God and the mercy that we are to extend to others. The Easter Triduum that we have just celebrated is the ultimate expression of God s mercy. Jesus takes our sins upon himself and nails them to the cross. Through his Resurrection we have access to eternal life with him in his kingdom. In baptism we die to sin and rise to new life. At the elevation of the host during the Eucharistic Prayer we affirm our faith: Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory. Every time we receive communion we are participating in the paschal mystery and partaking of the true bread of life. So every Sunday is a celebration of divine mercy. Based on a revelation to Sr. Faustina, a Polish nun who died in 1938, Pope John Paul II declared the Second Sunday of Easter to be Divine Mercy Sunday. Sr. Faustina calls us to pray for divine mercy, to come to know divine mercy and to bring divine mercy to others. Sr. Faustina was canonized (proclaimed a saint) on April 30, 2000.

3 Second Sunday of Easter Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we concluded the Octave of Easter, eight days of celebrating the resurrection of Christ. One of the recurring themes throughout this season is that of peace. In fact, the whole Christ event is about peace. Jesus comes to bring peace to our souls, the peace that the world cannot give. This peace takes many forms. One form of this peace is the security of knowing the promise of an eternal life of joy with the Lord. The Resurrection promises that death is not the final word. Our participation in the life of Christ, given at baptism, gives us the peace of knowing that when our earthly pilgrimage is complete, we will be united with God and with our loved ones forever. Another form of Christ s peace is serenity of heart. God is always present to us through the Holy Spirit to guide, nurture and protect us on our earthly journey. Our scriptures today show us the truth of both these promises of peace. The reading from the Acts of the Apostles shows this peace in action. The community of believers gathered in joy to celebrate the breaking of the bread and devoted themselves to prayers. The apostles worked many signs and wonders, leading to the awe and support of the surrounding community and to an increase in the number of people who were being saved. We, too, participate in this peace and joy when we break the bread and share the Eucharistic meal in communion with one another. The Eucharist is the visible presence of the Risen Christ among us today, given to us by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit. St. Peter tells the early Christian community that the resurrection of Christ gives them a new birth in hope of an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled and unfading, kept in heaven for them by the power of God and safeguarded through faith. We are to keep the faith, even though we may face various trial in this life, so that we will experience the indescribable joy of salvation. At his birth in Bethlehem Jesus is given the title Prince of Peace. In today s gospel the Risen Christ says to the disciples, peace ; and breathes upon them. They receive the Holy Spirit as Christ sends them forth, just as the Father has sent his Son. He gives them the power to forgive sins, which in this context refers to the commission to baptize. As Christ has given them his peace through the gift of the Holy Spirit, so, too, are the disciples to impart this gift of peace to others through the bestowal of the Holy Spirit in the waters of baptism. It is through baptism that sins are forgiven and the believer is born into the kingdom of God. Our Holy Week and Easter celebrations were truly moving spiritual experiences. They are the high point of our faith. I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to give us the opportunity to be drawn so deeply into the mystery of God s love. Last week s column included a general thank you written before Holy Week. Now that the celebrations have taken place, these words take on a deeper meaning. A special thanks to Grace Pinas, Celeste Burke and the Art and Environment Committee for decorating the church so beautifully. To Dennis Costanzo, the choir and cantors who provided the wonderful music. To the lectors, Eucharistic ministers and altar servers. To Pat Zyburt who coordinated the lectors and the practices for the Triduum. To Mary Ann Furphy who coordinated the volunteer participants during the liturgies. And to all of you who joined together in worship to raise our prayers and praise to God. Our Lenten Almsgiving Appeal for the Maison Fortune Orphanage in Haiti raised $5,850. The money will provide scholarships for the older children to attend the McKenna Technical Institute (another branch of our missionary efforts in Haiti) to provide job training and business skills to the young people. Thank you for all your generosity and support. The Sports Association Dinner and Awards celebration will be held this Wednesday, April 30th. The enthusiasm and commitment of the board, the coaches, parents and players is truly inspirational. The sports program provides opportunities for growth in the life lessons of hard work, teamwork, sportsmanship and the bonding of friendships. I always look forward to this joyful celebration. Thank you to all for the many hours of time and love given to our student athletes. This Saturday, May 3rd, our children from the school and religious education programs will be celebrating the reception of their First Holy Communion. It is a joy and an honor to be part of this major event in the life of these young people. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives, the gift of the Risen Christ himself, fulfilling his promise to be with us to the end of the age. It is in the Eucharist that we draw our strength, our hope, our very spiritual life. The total cost of this project is $8,000. The Saint Robert Bellarmine Sports Association (SRBSA) has already pledged $4,000, which will complete half the classrooms in the school. Now we are reaching out to you to help us fund the other half of this project by making a pledge to this effort. IT S SIMPLE. HERE S HOW IT WORKS: Bingo Boards will be placed in the back of church on April 27 th and May 4 th. Each Board will have 30 boxes with a dollar amount ranging from $1 to $30. Select the dollar amount you would like to pledge, sign your name in the box of the dollar amount you are pledging, and write a check or pay cash in that amount to the SRBSA. There are also 4 boxes containing $75, $150, $300 and $465. If your pledge box is taken, no worries! You can combine boxes to total up to your pledge amount. For example, if you wish to pledge $30 and the $30 box is taken, you can select a $20 box and a $10 box. Any combination will work.
