Acts describes the believers gathered in one place together as Jews from every nation descended on Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost (the celebration of the Law given to Moses on Mt. Sinai). Pentecost, Greek for 50 days, was celebrated fifty days after Passover and becomes the birthday of the Church. Described here, the Holy Spirit comes upon the first disciples in a strong driving wind and then settled on them as tongues as of fire. The large crowd of Jews were astounded and amazed as they listened to the disciples and heard them speak, each in their own native language, as they proclaimed the Good News of Jesus. The Letter of St. Paul to the Galatians describes how one is to live by the Spirit. Paul contrasts the results of one who is guided by the Spirit to one who lives in the desire of the flesh. Living in the flesh leads to immorality, impurity, and hatreds, while living in the Spirit leads to love, joy, and peace. For Paul, those who accepted Christ cannot live as those unconcerned about the things of God. They must imitate the fruits of the Spirit leading to love of fellow human beings. The reading from John s Gospel recounts Jesus explaining the role of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. He tells them that when the Advocate comes he will testify to me. Jesus describes the unique relationship that he, the Father and the Holy Spirit maintain. He has much more to tell the disciples but because they cannot bear it now, he tells them when the Spirit comes, he will guide them in all things. Acts 2: 1-11 Galatians 5: John 15: 26-27; 16: FEAST OF THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY This Thursday, May 31, we celebrate the Visitation of the Blessed Mother to her cousin Elizabeth. In the first reading the prophet Zephaniah tells Zion to shout for joy and exult because God has given them a mighty savior. In Luke s gospel we hear the story of the Visitation. Mary goes to the hill country to visit her cousin Elizabeth who is carrying John the Baptist in her womb. Elizabeth recognizes her as the mother of her Lord because the baby has stirred in her womb, leaping for joy when he sensed that the Messiah was present in Mary s womb. Mary then proclaims her Magnificat which we have echoed in prayer throughout the centuries. The significance of this celebration is to remind us that God is faithful to his promise and has given us a Savior who shows us God s love, mercy and fidelity. We are called to respond, rejoicing in God s love and loving one another. Zephaniah 3:14-18a Luke 1:39-56 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL PLEDGE REPORT The monthly pledge billings for the Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal pledges have been mailed. It is very important that these pledges be paid so that our parish will reach and, hopefully, exceed our goal. Once the pledge payments have exceeded our goal, all of the additional funds are returned to our parish for use in our ministries. PARISH GOAL: $31,278 AMOUNT PLEDGED: $36,341 AMOUNT PAID: $20,026 REMAINING BALANCE: $16,315
3 The Solemnity of Pentecost Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, rejoicing in the gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost, Greek for 50 Days, officially ends the Easter season. For forty days after the Resurrection Jesus appeared to the disciples and continued to instruct them. At his Ascension he told them to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Ten days later, while the apostles were in fearful hiding, the Holy Spirit descended on them in a great wind with tongues of fire. God never does anything half way. These manifestations of God do more than reveal his power and are more than a wake up call pointing to an important event. In Pentecost the disciples were filled with God himself. They received the promised indwelling of the Holy Spirit. In the Acts of the Apostles we are told how this transformed them. Strengthened by the power of God, the disciples boldly and publicly proclaimed the Risen Christ as Lord and Messiah. Thus, Pentecost completes the Paschal Mystery and marks the birth of the Church. In its visible dimension, the Church is created around the apostles who journeyed with Christ and were witness to both his resurrection and his teachings. Jesus gave the apostles the commission to testify to the Spirit of Truth that has been given to them and to proclaim the good news of salvation. The Advocate will also teach them to testify to the truth which is the glory of the Father. In its invisible, or spiritual dimension, the Church forms the mystical Body of Christ, a spiritual communion of those who have received the gift of the Holy Spirit (baptism). The bishops and presbyters call the visible community together so that the Holy Spirit can bring out the invisible spiritual gifts of all the faithful to live the good news. In John s gospel Pentecost actually takes place on Easter itself. He relates that it was on the evening of that first day when Jesus had risen from the tomb that Jesus comes to the disciples. His first words are Peace be with you. And, of course, the disciples rejoice when they see him. Easter is first and foremost a season of joy. When Jesus preached his public ministry, he promised to be with them always. In the Resurrection they experience the joy of that promise come true. Theologians call this theme of John s gospel realized eschatology. Eschatology is Greek for last things. What St. John proclaims is that the kingdom of God is already present in the world. Jesus first words are peace be with you. It is Christ s presence that brings peace; a peace that the world cannot give. He then breathes the Holy Spirit upon them. They receive not just the power of God, but God himself. The Holy Spirit is the real presence of Christ in the world. This is of utmost importance to St. John. In his gospel the disciples receive the Holy Spirit before the Ascension. John wants us to understand that Jesus never leaves us. The apostles are commanded to impart this same Holy Spirit, the divine life of Christ, to all who come to believe. St. Paul tells us that the Holy Spirit bestows his gifts on all those who profess Jesus as Lord. We all have different gifts but they come from the same Spirit to contribute to building the kingdom of God here on earth. And the peace that Christ gives us is his own indwelling presence in our lives that casts out fear and enables us to live as children of God. In the coming of the Holy Spirit all the baptized have received the indwelling of God and are partakers of the divine nature. St. Paul tells us that when we live in the Spirit we exhibit his fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness and self control. Exactly how we live out our baptismal grace is the work of the Holy Spirit calling forth our individual gifts so the divine image can grow in us and transform the world. Thank you to the Sports Board for hosting the Comedy Nite last Saturday. We had a very enjoyable evening and were able to raise some funds for the new gym floor and other needs for the school. I will let you know the financial results as soon as they are available. Thanks also go to our Girl Scouts who hosted the Coffee and Donuts last Sunday. Monday our nation celebrates Memorial Day. I want to extend my thanks and prayers to all our veterans and active duty military men and women and their families. We want to remember all those who died in service to our country. Our parish mass will be at 9 a.m. More information on Memorial Day can be found on page five. This will be a very busy and exciting week for our school. Our Eighth Grade Graduation Mass and Ceremony will be celebrated in the church this Friday at 7 p.m. Also on Friday the Kindergarten Graduation will be held at 9 a.m. in the Parish Hall and the Pre-School year-end picnic will be held at Dunham Park at 11:30 a.m. Next Sunday the School Board will host Coffee and Donuts after all the masses and there will be a special Student Blessing at the 10 a.m. mass for all students including elementary, high school and any other educational programs. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

We remember all those who gave their lives in service to our nation, as well as their families who mourn them. We pray for those who died, for all our veterans, our active military personnel and for their families. Three years after the Civil War an organization of Union army veterans established this day to honor all who died in that terrible conflict among the states. Originally called Decoration Day, it was a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Major General John Logan established Decoration Day on May 30, probably chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. The first major celebration was held at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C. It was not until after World War I that the commemoration was expanded to include those who died in all American wars. Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday in In the reading from the Book of Numbers the Lord instructs Aaron to bless the Israelites that the Lord will look kindly upon them, bless them and give them peace. The gospel reading from St. Matthew is the litany of the Beatitudes. God blesses those who imitate the virtues of Jesus, bringing Christ to those around them. Numbers 6:22-27 Matthew 5:1-12a

7 The Solemnity of Pentecost Page 7 ST. ROBERT SCIENCE PROGRAM In honor of the Palos Hills Bald Eagles, that have recently hatched eaglets; the 7 th graders have been studying and researching about the American Bald Eagle. On Wednesday, May 9 th, the 7 th grade students participated in a wonderful and enriching activity in science class. Their task was to build the strongest eagle nest and pack it full of softballs, baseballs, and golf balls. These balls were to represent eagle eggs. The 7 th graders have been researching about how huge eagle nests truly are, and the hard work and time that is put into creating them. (The largest nest to date was discovered in Florida, weighing over 4 tons) To make this task even more exciting, the different sized balls were assigned different point values. Men s softballs equaled 5 points, women s softballs equaled 4 points, baseballs equaled 3 points, and golf balls equaled 1 point. The teams who built the strongest nest with the most points would be the winner. Mr. Marusek, the same man who helped run the Girls Science Olympics, was present during this activity. He was gracious enough to collect massive bags of sticks and branches to help make this possible. Before the event began, he explained to the students that he has run this activity for many years throughout grade schools and high schools. Before he came to St. Robert Bellarmine, the current record was 45 points. Needless to say, our 7 th graders were motivated! After about an hour and a half of building, the 7 th grade students managed not only to beat the current record, they actually smashed it, making us so proud! Our third place team- Jenny Buske, Megan Walsh, and Jessica Keathley, scored an amazing 116 points! Our second place team-orion Heinosh, Carlo Fontaine, and Christian Aggari, scored an outstanding 136 points. Finally, our first place winners blew the competition and the record away with an amazing 207 points. Our winners were Michael Silva, Owen Meade, and Robert Van Houghton. These three young men created the most amazing nest. It took them about two hours of hard work, careful planning, and teamwork to pull this off! GREAT JOB EVERYONE!!!!!!
