Margaret Ludden, Robert Walsh, Patricia Klenck, Gina Brettman Feast of the Baptism of the Lord The Baptism of the Lord celebrates the human entrance into the divine family. Jesus, God-made-man, goes down into the Jordan River to be baptized by John to identify with the sins of humanity. Jesus does not need to be baptized for the forgiveness of his sins. He has none. Rather, by his baptism, Jesus sanctifies the waters so that we may be baptized for the forgiveness of our sins. In the first reading (one of the four Suffering Servant passages), the prophet Isaiah proclaims that God has sent his chosen one to bring justice to the nations, as a light for the nations to open the eyes of the blind and to set the captives free. In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, St. Peter comes to the house of Cornelius, a Gentile, and declares that in Christ salvation is open to all people. Those who fear the Lord and act righteously are acceptable to God. In the gospel reading, John the Baptist declares that he baptizes with water, but one mightier than he is coming who will baptize with fire and the Holy Spirit. Jesus is baptized along with the people. The Spirit descends and a voice from heaven is heard saying, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7 Acts 10:34-38 Luke 3:15-16, Put YOUR faith into ACTION! We need volunteers to take down Christmas decorations in Church. 3 The Baptism of the Lord Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today the Church marks the end of the Christmas season with the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord. The scriptures recount the unfolding of God s plan of salvation, revealing his love for all people. As we remember the stories of the season, we stand in wonder and gratitude for the amazing grace of God. In the gift of the Incarnation God takes on our human nature. Now at his baptism, Christ invites humanity to share in his divine nature. From the beginning of creation, God desired an intimate relationship with humanity. In the beginning Adam and Eve were created in God s own divine image. Original sin marred that image and separated them from God. But God did not intend to let human weakness ruin his plans. In other scriptures, the prophet Ezekiel reminds us that God did not create sin, and did not intend the death of any of his creatures. The unfolding plan of salvation is the continuous revelation of God s love. His grace is a continuous offer to us to enter into that love. In God s own image, we are given the power of choice: the gift of free-will. This is the one gift that God will never take away. We are invited to be in relationship with God, to share in his divine life. It is freely offered and we must freely accept. Biblical revelation is the story of human response to God s grace: sometimes freely accepted, usually freely rejected. Because of the repeated rejections of grace, God sends the prophets, performs miracles and gives signs of his presence to continuously manifest his love, and to invite us back into a relationship with him. Finally, he chooses to reveal himself in a way that will make his invisible presence visible so that we can see him clearly. Preface I for the Mass of Christmas tells us that Christ is the new and radiant vision of God s glory. In him we see our God made visible and so are caught up in the love of the God we cannot see. The wonder of the Christmas story is God s way of getting our attention. At Epiphany we hear the promise that God s love is open to everyone. The star that guided the Magi to the infant Jesus is the light of the Holy Spirit that continues to lead us to Christ. Today s first reading from the Prophet Isaiah recalls the fidelity of God. The people are in exile in Babylon because they had turned away from the Covenant. In the midst of their despair over the destruction of the Temple, and their exile from the Promised Land, Isaiah is a herald to the people. He proclaims salvation as an accomplished fact, even in the midst of exile: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my Chosen One with whom I am well pleased, upon whom I have sent my spirit; he shall bring justice to the nations In a prophecy of future deliverance, he proclaims, I have set you as a Covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring prisoners out of confinement and, from the dungeon, those who live in darkness. This is the message of Christmas. The Savior has come into the world as a light in the darkness, just as Isaiah promised. This promise is fulfilled in the mission of John the Baptist, who proclaims himself a voice crying out in the wilderness. The people will remember the prophecy of Isaiah when John proclaims that the one mightier than he is coming. John s baptism is for the repentance of sin, but Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit. Jesus allows himself to be baptized so that we can receive the Holy Spirit, and thus become partakers in his divine nature. The forgiveness of sins is essential for salvation. But far more amazing is the gift of the restoration of our relationship with God and our reunion with him. The Baptism of the Lord invites us into this divine relationship. How we live our daily lives is our response to that grace. Today s feast reminds us that Christ came to save all people. In Baptism, we are made sons and daughters of God, and therefore all people are our brothers and sisters. Pope Francis calls us to remember God s mercy and our own baptismal call to extend that mercy to others. Christ calls us to work for peaceful reconciliation and an end to all that divides us. Our Conversations on Faith series resumes this Wednesday at 7 p.m. Fr. Elliott Dees from St. Pascal will guide our discussion of the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The Girl Scouts will host Coffee and Donuts next Sunday morning after the masses. Please join us for this time of hospitality and fellowship. The Children s Liturgy of the Word and the Blessing of Winter Sports Teams will both be celebrated at the 10 a.m. mass next Sunday. 6 Page 6 January 13, 2019 SRB DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OUTREACH COMMITTEE Domestic violence (also known as spouse abuse, partner violence, intimate partner violence, battering, and numerous other terms) is a pattern of coercion used by one person to exert power and control over another person in the context of a dating, family, or household relationship. (domesticviolenceoutreach.com) Domestic violence incidents from our neighborhood have appeared in the news (Nadig Newspapers Chicago s Northwest Side Press): In Dec a woman was shot fatally by her ex-husband in the 4700 block of North Linder Ave. Afterwards, he committed suicide. In Oct a woman was choked and dragged out of her car by a man during a domestic-related incident near Higgins and Nagle Ave. Another woman, who was passing by, intervened; the man, who was trying to put the first woman in another car, fled the scene alone. In Nov a man stabbed a woman to death on the street in the 4800 block of North Moody Ave. after waiting for her for about forty minutes. He was caught later by police. The SRB Domestic Violence Outreach Committee will meet on Monday, January 14th from 7 pm to 8:30 pm in Kernaghan Hall. Please join us. Our mission statement is threefold as follows: To raise awareness of domestic violence, to help victims and perpetrators connect to support services, and to promote the prevention of domestic violence. Much gratitude and thanks to the group of over 25 "church mice" who donated their time and talent to decorating the church for Christmas. For example, Appeal funds support our Faith Formation, Theology on Tap and SPRED programs. As we contemplate God s many gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude.
