BAPTIZED INTO THE FAITH Ethan Jack Charoenrath Son of Matthew & Michele Charoenrath Liam Scott Leeders Son of Terrance & Colleen Leeders Nathan Keyon Longmire Son of Daryl Lonmire & Maria Apostol Eric Joshue Rivera Son of Eric Rivera & Trataurachi Estrada Third Sunday of Easter In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, St. Peter preaches the new faith before a crowd in the Temple area. He accuses his listeners of denying the Holy and Righteous One (the Messiah) and of putting to death the author of life. Then in a conciliatory tone, he adds that he knows that they acted out of ignorance; and that Christ s suffering was foretold in Scripture. Now they must repent and be converted to receive forgiveness of sins. In his First Letter St. John tells us that he is writing so that we may not commit sin. He says that Jesus is the payment for all people s sins and that we must keep God s commandments if we are to have the love of God in us. Today s reading from Luke s Gospel describes another post-resurrection appearance of Christ. The disciples are gathered together as two of them describe an encounter with the Risen Lord, when suddenly Jesus stood in their midst. They were startled and terrified, thinking that he was a ghost, but Jesus calmed their fears by letting them examine his glorified body and even eating with them. The disciples calmed down so that Jesus was able to teach them and to open their minds to understand the Scriptures. Acts 3: 13-15, John 2: 1-5a Luke 24: Capital Repairs The parish is planning to invest in some major repairs in the school this summer. Beginning in June, after school lets out, we will replace all three of the school roofs. The work is estimated to cost $140,000, funded out of the Capital Campaign. We will also be removing the old floor tile in the hallways and office areas in the junior building and replacing it with new vinyl flooring tile. The school planning committee is working on upgrading the quality and the design to give the school a bright, modern look. Total cost of the project is estimated at $25,000, funded out of bequests to the school and from savings. We are also exploring the possibility of replacing the gym floor this summer with a new hardwood floor if a special donation comes through. Otherwise, we will delay the installation until sufficient funds are generated through the Sports Board Comedy Nights and other fundraising efforts. Finally, we plan to have the school s name and directional signage installed through the school campus and parking lots. Total cost of this project, including installation permits, is $11,000, funded in part with a grant from the Archdiocese.
3 April 22, rd Sunday of Easter Page Three From the Pastor s Desk All of today s readings for the Third Sunday of Easter focus on the necessity of the death of Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus has nailed our sins to the Cross in order that we might receive the forgiveness that we cannot achieve on our own. On Easter Day Jesus poured forth upon mankind the merits which he had gathered on Good Friday (quoted from Blessed Ildefonso Schuster). Our Easter joy is the recognition of this truth. Our salvation is the humble acceptance of this gift. When the Risen Christ appears to the disciples, their first reaction is fear. They think that they are seeing a ghost, an unholy being from the realm of the dead. They do not yet understand the scriptures that the Messiah must first suffer and then be raised. Nor do they yet understand the implications of the Resurrection and the glorified body. Jesus reassures them that it is truly he, himself. Only then are they overjoyed and able to understand the truth that he has been telling them for the last three years of his public ministry. More than any other phrase in the gospels, Jesus tells us, peace be with you and do not be afraid. We get beyond our fears and doubts so that we may believe. Conversely, when we see with the eyes of faith, our fears will be relieved and we will receive the peace that only Christ can give. The gospel opens with the two disciples recounting what had happened to them and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread (the Road to Emmaus story). This is a reminder to them that Jesus continues to be present to his people in the breaking of the bread. In the gospel Jesus eats a piece of fish, continuing the theme of the sacred meal, and explains the scriptures to them. He tells them (as Peter later explains to the Jewish people in our reading from the Acts of the Apostles) that the Messiah had to suffer and die for the forgiveness of sins. It is in the celebration of the Eucharist that sins are forgiven (the daily failings due to human weakness). St. John tells us that Jesus has given us an Advocate with the Father to expiate our sins. He also reminds us that when we keep God s commandments (live in the truth of his Word), the love of God is perfected in us. In the Eucharist we are joined more closely to Christ as we recognize his presence. This real presence of Christ is the expiation of our sins and the fulfillment of his promise to remain with his people. This is indeed cause for joy and for giving thanks. Last Sunday, three of our older children celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Communion, receiving the Eucharist for the first time at our family mass. Congratulations to Selena Carmona, Holly Lewandowski and Katelyn Saunstaire. Please continue to keep these children and their families in your prayers. Thank you to our Liturgical Ministers who hosted the Coffee and Donuts after the masses last Sunday. This past Friday we had a wonderful celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Thank you to Bishop Andrew Wypych for presiding at this beautiful celebration. Thank you to all of our catechists, teachers and sacramental staff for preparing our young people and organizing the celebration. Special thanks also to the volunteers who prepared and hosted the lovely reception with such good food for us to enjoy after the liturgy. Congratulations to all our Confirmandi. There will be a special Blessing for our Sports Teams at the 10 a.m. mass this morning. Our student athletes, their coaches and their families have worked hard to learn to incorporate our Christian values and the spirit of teamwork and cooperation as well as learning the joy of sports. Blessings to all our Sports Team members. Thanks to our Business Manager, Kathy Goetz, and to some of our more internet-savvy volunteers, we now have the capacity to process on-line donations through the Give Central system. Give Central was specifically designed for the Archdiocese and allows parishioners and others the ability to securely contribute on-line. I am excited about this opportunity here at St. Robert s. Many of our neighboring parishes are already using Give Central and have found it to be safe, secure and helpful. Simply go to the parish website and find the appropriate donation link. Please call Kathy at the rectory for more information. Due to you, our parishioners, we have raised nearly $7,000 for the new technical school at the Maison Fortune Orphanage in Haiti. We will have progress reports on the school in future bulletins. Thank you very much for your generosity. Finally, the Finance Committee and I have approved some major capital repairs to the school this summer. Please see page two for details. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

5 April 22, rd Sunday of Easter Page Five Conversations on Faith Thursday May 3rd 7 p.m. in the Rectory Do you know what our faith teaches about Justice in our world? Throughout our history, and specifically in the last 100 years, the Catholic Church has taken a stand for the poor and vulnerable in society. Our church, through Catholic Social Teaching, has influenced many things from unions and the 40 hour work week to schools and hospitals that are open to anyone, to the way we care for God s creation; but so few people realize that this is an integral part of what it means to be Catholic. Come find out more about what many people say is the church s best kept secret and join the conversation about how to make it an important reality today. What responsibility do we have for our neighbors? - Catholic Social Teaching ST. ROBERT BELLARMINE ADULT EDUCATION Conversations on Faith are part of the Adult Education at St. Robert Bellarmine. We believe that we are always learning what it means to be an adult in the church. No matter how grown up we are, we can still Grow in our Faith.
