Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the reading from the Book of Wisdom, we hear that evildoers are plotting against the just one of God, the prophet who calls the people back to the Covenant and repentance for their sins. The wicked plot to revile him, torture him and condemn him to a shameful death. St. James reminds his listeners that the passions of jealousy, envy and selfishness lead to evil and violence. He exhorts the people to peace, mercy and righteousness. In the gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that he will be handed over to those who will kill him; and that after three days he will rise from the dead. He then takes a child in his arms and tells the disciples that whoever receives a child in his name receives Jesus himself as well as the Father who sent him. Wisdom 2:12, James 3:16-4:3 Mark 9:30-37 Seminary Sunday Today the Archdiocese celebrates Seminary Sunday, honoring those who have answered the call to a vocation to the priesthood. Seminarians take a great leap of faith and invest vast amounts of time, talent and their own treasure to answer God s call to serve. The Seminarian Education Fund provides support for the training and education of men studying for the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Chicago. The fund helps to cover the cost to educate each Archdiocesan seminarian as he proceeds through the various stages of formation before he is ordained a priest. The average cost to educate a seminarian at Mundelein runs over $50,000 per year. With sixty-four men studying for the priesthood, this comes out to over $3.2 million per year. Please read Archbishop Cupich s letter on page six and make a generous contribution to support these men seeking to answer God s call to a life of service as a priest for the people of God in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

3 Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk In today s scriptures we hear how sin distorts our lives and our world. We also hear of God s plan for redemption and our opportunity to participate in that redemption through personal conversion. God calls us back to his Covenant through trust in his love for us that gives us the courage to transform our lives. Due to original sin, we often allow our passions to control our lives. Jesus invites us to come to him like little children, confident in his love. In doing so, our distorted emotions will be calmed and transformed into that peace which Christ alone can give. In the Book of Wisdom, the prophet calls the people to turn away from sin and to turn back to the Covenant. But the wicked do not want to hear the truth; so they contrive to have him condemned to a shameful death. In the gospel, Jesus foretells that he will be handed over to evil men who will kill him. We see in Christ the fulfillment of the Old Testament, that Jesus is the just one of God and that he will be put to death because he calls the people back to the Covenant. Our pride often prevents us from seeing or acting on God s Word. In the gospel Jesus also tells his disciples that after three days he will rise from the dead. The resurrection of Christ promises that evil can be overcome. The call to conversion is the call to overcome the evil in our own hearts. In the second half of the gospel reading, Jesus teaches us the path to humility. He tells us that those who wish to be first will be last. If we want to receive the grace of God we must come to him as the children do, by living in simple faith and trust, rather than by the sophisticated cunning of worldly wisdom. Last Sunday we recognized the Catechists, Teachers, Staff and Volunteers in our Religious Education Programs for all they do to share our faith with the children of the parish and to prepare them to receive the sacraments. This is one of the most important ministries in the Church and I am deeply grateful to all who share their gifts of time and talent to nurture the faith life of our community. This past Tuesday we held the Parent Confirmation Meeting. The 2019 Confirmation Rite of Enrollment will be celebrated next Sunday at the 10 a.m. Mass. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers. This past Friday morning the school held its annual Run-A-Thon fundraiser. This was a great time to see the children and many of their families come out to support our school. Donations can still be made to The St. Robert Bellarmine Parents Association. Today we celebrate Seminary Sunday. While we don t have a seminarian today to share his vocation journey, we are all reminded of the gifts that good priests have been to our parishes and in our lives. There will be a second collection today to support our Archdiocesan seminaries. The Parents Association will host a textile recycling drive next Saturday (all day) in the front parking lot. Please see page eight for more information. The Boy Scout Popcorn Sale will be held in the vestibule next weekend after all the masses. As of the Renew My Church focus on Evangelization, Cardinal Cupich has scheduled a two-day summit for all priests and pastoral staffs on October 1-2. The staff has been meeting meekly for the past eight weeks in preparation for the conference. There will be much work to be done after the summit. I will keep you posted as this process develops. Our Annual Financial Report for the year ended June 30th has been submitted and accepted by the Archdiocese. We will be analyzing and summarizing the results over the next few weeks, and will report to you sometime in October. 6 Page 6 September 23, 2018 Beginning on October 7 our parish will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God s Grace, The Women s Centers have saved almost 40,000 babies and their mothers from abortion since opening in Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church on October 7, fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of October 28. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Resurrection College Prep High School will be hosting two fall Open Houses for prospective students and their families to tour the school facilities and meet with current students, staff, administrators and coaches on Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 pm and Sunday, October 21, 2018 from 1:00-3:00 pm. Visitors will receive a personalized tour of the campus to visit classrooms, science labs, athletic facilities, fine arts spaces, and the Resurrection makerspace, the Innovation Lab. Visitors will also learn about the curriculum and programs at Resurrection, including the Mother Celine Honors Program, the Rankin Academic Support Program and the Practicum Job Shadowing Program. Information will also be provided about clubs and activities, as well as work/study, tuition assistance and scholarship opportunities. Resurrection also invites 8th grade girls to schedule a Shadow Day to spend the day at Resurrection. Students are paired with a current student to experience a typical day at Resurrection.
