Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden The Nativity of St. John the Baptist John the Baptist is the one who was sent to prepare the way of the Lord, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins so that our hearts could be opened to hear the good news of salvation. John the Baptist is the only saint whose birth we celebrate. This should give us an idea of how important John is in the plan of salvation and help us to focus on his message. John is the last of the prophets, of whom Jesus says no one is greater. John comes in the name of Elijah to announce the coming of salvation. He is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Israel, inaugurating the gospel and proclaiming that the Consolation of Israel is imminent. Isaiah tells us in the first reading that the Lord called him from his birth, making him a light of the nations so that God s salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. While this is normally applied as a prophecy about Jesus the Messiah, it is also a prophecy about John who announces the coming of the light and the coming of salvation. He is chosen from birth as Luke tells us in the gospel. Elizabeth, old and barren, conceives a child after the Archangel Gabriel visits Zechariah in the temple to announce the good news. When the child is born, they name him John, rather than after his father as was the custom, to tell the people that he has a different mission, that he has been set apart by God. Zechariah, who had been struck dumb, now recounts the vision and the promise of the angel and fear came upon all their neighbors and they understood that the hand of the Lord was with him. In the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul reminds the people that the prophecy of the promise of God has come true in the person of John the Baptist, who proclaimed this message of salvation and announced Christ s coming to the world. The importance both of the message and the messenger are the emphasis of this celebration. We are called to hear and believe the message, to repent our sins and convert our hearts so that we can receive the message of salvation. We are also called to imitate the humility of the messenger, who points to Christ rather than himself and says I am not worthy to untie the sandals of his feet.

3 The Nativity of St. John the Baptist Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk In a quirk of the calendar, we will not hear the scriptures from the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time today. We celebrate the Nativity of John the Baptist because this feast falls on a Sunday this year. The importance of this event cannot be overstated. First, John is the only saint whose birth we celebrate as a solemnity. Even Mary s birth is an optional memorial in the church calendar because it is her Immaculate Conception that is the important event in the plan of salvation. Secondly, when June 24 falls on a Sunday, the celebration supersedes the normal Sunday celebration. The Church is telling us to pay attention; something important is happening. John the Baptist is the forerunner of the Messiah, the herald who announces that the salvation of God s people is at hand. He comes to tell us to prepare the way of the Lord, preaching a baptism for the forgiveness of sins. Basically it is a spiritual spring cleaning so that we can receive the Lord into our hearts. The focus of today s celebration is on John s birth. It is about what God is doing. The prophet Isaiah tells us that the Lord called him from his birth; the Lord named him while still in his mother s womb. This is the story of John s conception which immediately precedes today s gospel. While in the temple, Zechariah is visited by the Archangel Gabriel who announces the fulfillment of the prophecy and tells him the child is to be named John. This is a break with tradition as sons were named after their fathers (or, more usually, their grandfathers). The scripture tells us that no one in Zechariah s family is named John. While it may seem like an insignificant detail, it really is of prime importance. God always acts outside the norms of human expectations to tell us something important is going on. Elizabeth is chosen because she is old and barren. Mary is chosen while she is still a virgin. God appears to Moses in a burning bush. All these signs (as well as Jesus miracles) are given to get our attention. Then we are able to hear the message. God is bringing his plan of salvation to fulfillment. The promise made to Israel was that Elijah would return to announce that the Messiah was coming. John was chosen to bring that message to the people. The celebration of his birth is a cause for great joy. Salvation is at hand. The kingdom is about to be made a reality. Wake up! Get ready! Don t miss it! When John is circumcised in the temple and given the name of John, Zechariah s speech is restored and he tells the people the announcement of the angel. All were filled with wonder and knew that God had a special plan for the child. That plan, of course, was to be the herald, the forerunner of the Messiah. Heralds, like angels, are messengers. When God sends a messenger, we are supposed to listen. The message is that the kingdom is at hand. We are called by John to repent, to recognize our need for God s grace so that we can receive Christ into our lives. John is the Voice who announces that the Consolation of Israel is coming. Jesus is Salvation; he gives us the Holy Spirit, the Consoler. We are to hear the message, to repent our sins and believe the Good News. We celebrate the birth of John the Baptist on June 24, the summer solstice, because we celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25, the winter solstice. Just as Jesus is the Light of the world, celebrated symbolically when the sun returns and the days get longer, so, too, do we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist when the days are getting shorter. John tells us that he must decrease and Christ must increase. John points not to himself, but to the one who is to come. He tells us that he is not the Messiah, that he is not worthy to untie his sandals. We are called to imitate the messenger, to act in humility, to realize that all we are and have is a gift from God. St. Paul reminds us in the Acts of the Apostles that it is to the God-fearing that the word of salvation has been sent. So we celebrate today God s plan of salvation and pray for the grace to be more like St. John, to open our hearts to God s will rather than our own. He must increase and we must decrease if we are to enter into his kingdom. The 9th Annual Walter Monco Memorial Day at the Races will he held this afternoon at Arlington Park race track. We gather to remember a dearly beloved member of our parish for over fifty-five years who passed away nine years ago. His family established a scholarship in his name to benefit our school and inaugurated this event to raise money for the scholarship fund. I hope to see some of you there. Have a great week and a wonderful summer. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
