He recounts Jesus many post-resurrection appearances and instructions to the disciples. Now Jesus instructs them to wait in Jerusalem, for, in a few days, they will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. As usual, the disciples misunderstand, and ask him if he is going to restore the kingdom of Israel. Jesus tells them it is not for them to know the Father s plans; but that they will be his witnesses, not only in Jerusalem and Judea, but "to the ends of the earth". After saying this, Jesus is taken from their sight. Suddenly, two men dressed in white garments (angels) appear to them and ask them why are they standing here looking up at the sky. The angels tell them that Jesus has been taken up into heaven and will return to them in the same way. In the second reading, St. Paul writes to the Ephesians, praying that God will send them the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, giving them knowledge of Jesus Christ; that their hearts be enlightened so that they may know the hope and the richness of the glory that is their inheritance, and that they may believe in the power of God made manifest in Christ. Luke ends his gospel narrative today with an account similar to the one in his beginning of the Acts of the Apostles. Significantly, however, in the gospel Jesus reminds the disciples that it was written (foretold by the prophets) that the Christ must suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day, that repentance for sins would be preached in his name, and that the disciples are witnesses to these very things. Jesus then tells them that he is sending the promise of the Father upon them and that they are to stay in the city until they are clothed with power from on high. He then blesses them and is taken up into heaven. The disciples return to Jerusalem "with great joy" and are continually in the Temple giving praise to God. Acts 1:1-11 Ephesians 1:17-23 Luke 24:46-53 Mary and Mother s Day In the month of May we honor the Blessed Mother and in a special way make extra time and prayer for our devotional life. These devotions remind us of Mary s "yes" to God that made possible the birth of Christ in our human nature. The motherhood of Mary confirms the full humanity of Christ in the Incarnation, sanctifying our human family. Pope Paul VI puts forth a beautiful understanding of our teachings about Mary and her role in the lives of the faithful. He reminds us that we venerate and honor Mary for her role in salvation and for the love that she had for God. It was God s will that she become the Mother of his only Son and that she nurture and support him throughout his earthly life. Mary continues to intercede for all her children as our guardian. So today we also honor our mothers for all they have done for us in imitation of Christ and Mary. Their love and sacrifice for us throughout our lives, their generosity and care, often get taken for granted. Today we want to recognize them and to say what often goes unsaid: Thanks, Mom!

3 Ascension of the Lord Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today is the Feast of the Ascension. Alleluia! Today Christ is taken up into heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father. This feast is the culmination of the Easter season and the goal of the Pascal mystery. What began on Good Friday, as a tragedy, finds its fulfillment in the Ascension. Through his Resurrection, Jesus overcomes the power of death. In his Ascension to heaven, Jesus is restored to his divinity, asserting his power over creation. In his Ascension he makes it possible for us to ascend to heaven at the end of our earthly journey. More importantly, it is only through the Ascension, Christ physically leaving this world, that he makes it possible for the Holy Spirit to come down upon us and to dwell within us. Only if we have the Holy Spirit to unite us to Christ in this life on earth can we hope to be glorified and united with him in heaven. Both St. Luke and St. Paul remind us of the power of God working through Christ. By recounting all the things that God has done in Christ, they hope to stir within us a sense of wonder, awe and majesty. They know that it is only through the experience of being caught up in the glory of God that a person can come to faith. St. Paul was a devoted and brilliant student of his religion, but it was only after his experience on the road to Damascus that he came to faith. St. Paul s personal experience of the Rapture (caught up into heaven) is what moved him to evangelize the world. The spiritual reality of our faith is that the gift of the Holy Spirit is the Rapture in the life of a Christian. It is the power of the Holy Spirit that must be the driving force and vision of our lives if we expect to be caught up in the Rapture at the end of time to dwell with Christ in heaven. "Rapture" simply means to be caught up in a state of total wonder and awe. This same Rapture is what is promised to the apostles by Jesus at the time of his Ascension. St. Luke calls this the power of the Holy Spirit in the Acts of the Apostles but in the gospel, Jesus calls this the "promise of God". Jesus says that he will send the promise of God upon them and that they will be clothed with power from on high. Jesus tells us that his life, death and resurrection have been foretold by the prophets. The promise was given to Abraham two thousand years earlier. By recounting the story of salvation we are to be drawn into this very mystery with a sense of wonder, awe and majesty. A careful reading of the scriptures is given to us so that we may believe the promise of God. This Rapture is promised as the completion of history, what Catholics refer to as the Second Coming of Christ. After Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples are staring up at the sky. This is a perfectly normal reaction. Watching someone ascend the sky to heaven doesn t happen every day. As they are watching and pondering, two men (angels) appear and promise them that Jesus will return in the same way. This promise of the Second Coming is referred to as the Rapture in order to help us achieve this state of wonder, awe and joy in the majesty of God. This joy of being caught up in the power of the Holy Spirit, the receiving the promise of God, is our entrance into the divine life of Christ. The celebration of Easter is a reminder of that initiation and the promise of its culmination in heaven. We honor the Virgin Mary in a special way throughout the month of May. We put the statue of the Blessed Mother on the Holy Family altar as a reminder of her special role in God s plan of salvation and in our lives. I encourage everyone to pray the mysteries of the rosary each day this month as we celebrate the gift of salvation during the Easter season. Happy Mother s Day and God s Blessings to all the wonderful women who have meant so much to us. I am truly blessed that my mother is still with us. Let s take time to show our love and gratitude to our moms. In this month when we honor Mary, we are reminded of the special place that mothers have in our hearts. My sympathies go out to all who have lost their mother and for whom this day brings only a reminder of that loss. May God grant you peace and consolation as you remember the great gift of your mother s love. Mother s Day Flowers are on sale today after all the masses. These beautiful flowers make a wonderful gift. All proceeds will go to support the work of the Women s Center to help families in crisis pregnancies and promote the dignity of all human life. Our second collection today is for Catholic Charities to help needy families throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Thank you all for your continued generosity. The Red Ribbon Gala raised just over $32,000 for our parish. Thanks again to Kathy Ernst and her team for all their hard work. Further details can be found in her update on page eight. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
