Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Mitchell Czajkowski, Patricia Klenck, Andrzej Kochanowski Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah, writing several centuries before Christ, tells the story, My friend had a vineyard on a fertile hillside and planted the choicest vines. The vineyard was well cared for but did not produce the intended crop of grapes, but wild grapes instead. He asks, What more was there to do for my vineyard that I had not yet done? The owner then says he will let the vineyard be destroyed because it did not produce good fruit. This is a parable of God s kingdom and a warning to the people to reform. St. Paul tells the Philippians to have no anxiety at all. He says this can be achieved through continuous prayer to God who will guard them. Paul then tells them to imitate him and to do whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely and gracious. If they do these things then God will be with them. In the gospel Jesus tells the religious leaders the parable of the landowner who leases his vineyard to tenant farmers who beat or kill the owner s servants sent to collect from them at harvest time. The owner finally sends his son to make the collection, thinking, They will respect my son. When the son is killed, Jesus asks the religious leaders what they think the vineyard owner s response will be. They answer that the tenants will be destroyed and replaced with new tenants. Jesus shocks the religious leaders by saying to them that they are the tenants in the story and that the kingdom of God will be taken from them and given to a people who will produce good fruit. Isaiah 5:1-7 Philippians 4:6-9 Matthew 21:33-43 Respect Life Month October is a month that Catholics have traditionally devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of God made flesh in Christ Jesus, the mother of the Church, and spiritual mother to each of us. Throughout the Archdiocese we honor the Blessed Mother by promoting the dignity of all human life and by making a conscious effort to bring peace and justice to all our relationships. As we celebrate Respect Life Sunday, we should all ask ourselves how well we promote a respect for life in the way we talk about others, the way we talk to others, the ways we treat our family and friends as well as the strangers, the marginalized and others whose beliefs we do not share, be they political, religious or social. Beginning this weekend, St. Robert Bellarmine parish will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer and other aid. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church this weekend, fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of October 25/26.

3 Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures tell us about God s invitation to us to participate in his kingdom and our response to that invitation. Our response to God has definite consequences on the salvation of our souls in this life and where we will spend the rest of eternity. The prophet Isaiah tells the parable of the vineyard that produced only wild grapes even though the vine dresser had given it the finest care. Wild grapes are sour and unfit to eat. He tells them that the vineyard is the House of Israel which will be trampled under foot. In the gospel Jesus tells the parable of the wicked tenants who would not pay the owner of the vineyard his share of the produce. The tenants beat or killed the owner s servants and finally killed his son as well. In response, the owner of the vineyard will send his wrath upon the tenants and destroy them. The context of the gospel is that of Holy Week. Jesus has entered Jerusalem in triumph and is teaching in the Temple precincts. This parable immediately follows last week s parable of the two sons sent to work in their father s vineyard. Jesus is hammering home the point that verbal assent to faith is not enough for salvation. The faithful must also walk in the path of righteousness, responding to the law of God by producing the good fruits of peace and justice and compassion. He has no time for subtlety since he knows that he is going to suffer his passion and death in a few days. In fact, in this parable he warns the leaders that they are going to kill him and that it is going to cost them dearly. He calls them wretched men who will suffer a wretched death and that the kingdom of God will be taken away from them. This is a call to conversion for us as well. The scriptures continually call us to act righteously by being generous in thought, word and deed. We are called to take care of the poor and the needy. How we treat others will be the measure by which we are judged by God. St. Paul reminds us that the way to salvation is to think about the things that God has taught us, that which is true, honorable, just, pure, gracious and worthy of praise. And then, he says, we are to keep on doing what we have learned and received. In the context of Respect Life Sunday, the scriptures call us to act justly toward the unborn, the terminally ill, the defenseless and the marginalized. Life is a gift from God for which we are all responsible. This includes, among others, the unborn babies, the infirm, those on death row, the outsider and the immigrant. The Church also teaches a preferential option for the poor as a reminder to consider the legitimate needs of others above our own comforts and preferences when making our decisions. Some of the issues highlighted this month are the rights of the unborn, inclusion awareness for those with disabilities, and support for missionary efforts working with the poorest of the poor throughout the world. We will be celebrating a special SPRED Mass today at noon for our friends in our religious education program with special needs. There will be refreshments in the hall immediately following the mass. All are welcome. On Friday, September 26th we held our 30th Annual Run-A-Thon. Thank you to the Parents Association and all the volunteers for another successful event and fundraiser for the school. Thank you also to all those who sponsored the children or made a donation. It was great day for building community and providing support for our school. The School will host We Love Our Kids Day this Friday, October 10th. There will be a special program for the families and projects in the classrooms with the children. We will also celebrate mass at 9:15 a.m. All are welcome. The Confirmation Rite of Enrollment will be celebrated next Sunday, October 12th at the 10 a.m. mass, followed by a mini retreat for the candidates. Please keep all these young people and their families in your prayers. The Harvest Gala honoring our school faculty will be celebrated on Saturday, October 18 beginning with the 5 p.m. mass followed by the social in the gym and school. More information can be found on page four. Tickets are available after all masses. Please pick up a Baby Bottle as you leave church today, fill it with your change, dollar bills or a check and return it to the rectory or the church by October 26. All funds collected will go to the Women s Center to assist them in their work with families in crisis pregnancies. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

9 Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 9 The St Robert Bellarmine Sports Association is in need of new volunteers to join our Board. We are looking for individuals that value fitness and athletics, and are willing to work as part of our team. There is an urgent need to replace a Board member that unexpectedly moved away. The duties of this person are to transition into our uniform/ equipment manager. This position would require ordering uniforms (through a pre-selected vendor) several times throughout the school year. This person would also be responsible for maintaining the upkeep of our equipment and all team related supplies for all sports. This would include ordering additional supplies, as needed, per the request of the board. Other duties include preparing coaches bags, purchasing scorebooks, maintaining first aid supplies, attending monthly meetings and helping to facilitate any and all fundraisers & activities we manage. We are also seeking additional members to transition into roles that will be become available in the near future, as a few of our Board members will be retiring when their children graduate. We would like to begin to prepare for this time, and make the transition as seamless as possible. A variety of skills are needed, so we are open to all that may be interested. All board members are required to attend our monthly meetings (normally the 2nd Monday of every month), be available for the few events we host, such as, Coffee and, the Sports Banquet honoring our athletes, coaches, and volunteers, & our annual fundraiser, etc. Don t have an athlete in our program yet.you can still get involved now, so that you may ensure this program continues to grow & improve for future Bruins. The Sports Association is a wonderful athletic tradition SRB offers and you can be a part of it. Our board welcomes parents, grandparents, siblings, parishioners, and alumni to get involved. Any person over the age of 21 that is interested in becoming a part of the SRBSA should srbsportsassoc@gmail.com.
