Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Third Sunday of Easter In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear part of Peter s Pentecost speech. The city is full of Jewish people from all over the world to celebrate the Jewish feast of Pentecost (a harvest festival). Peter preaches to them, proclaiming that Jesus is the promised Messiah from the House of David who has risen from the dead, fulfilling the prophecies of Scripture. He does not hold the Jews accountable for the death of Jesus, rather that he was delivered up to death by the set plan and foreknowledge of God. Peter and the apostles are witnesses to his resurrection and ascension into heaven, exalted at the right hand of God. Our second reading comes from the First Letter of St. Peter. He describes Jesus as the spotless lamb, unblemished from the foundation of the world, the sacrificial victim who was ransomed by God for us, while we were still in sin. He exhorts his followers to live in reverence and good conduct, putting our faith and hope in the promise of God. The gospel reading from St. Luke tells the account of the two disciples walking to the town of Emmaus and of their encounter with the risen Lord. At first they don t recognize Jesus. While describing the events of the last thee days to the stranger (Jesus), they say that they were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel. Jesus explains to them how the promised Messiah had to suffer and die and be raised up on the third day. When they come to an inn and have supper, they recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread. Jesus vanishes from their sight and they return to Jerusalem to tell the apostles that they have seen the risen Christ. Acts 2:14, Peter 1:17-21 Luke 24:13-35 Fifty Days of Easter Christ the Lord is risen from the dead! Alleluia! Sin and death crush us. The Resurrection ends this. Faith in the resurrection of Jesus proclaims that there is a future for every human being. The yearning we all have for unending life is answered definitively. We are freed from our bonds to sin and death. This is the reason for Easter; and Jesus is the everlasting sign of the promise of new and unending life for us. Because of this joy, the Church gives us fifty days to gaze into and contemplate the wonder and love of this mystery. Our words can fall silent before the mystery of the resurrection. With this joy of new and unending life, only one word may remain to us: Alleluia!

3 Third Sunday of Easter Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk The Scripture readings in the Easter Season continue the story of the Resurrection. We read the accounts of the Risen Christ appearing to the disciples (the Gospels) and hear the story of the early Church (the Acts of the Apostles and the First Letter of St. Peter). In today s readings, Peter proclaims to the Jewish people that Christ is the fulfillment of God s eternal plan for salvation; and later tells his followers to conduct their lives with reverence if they are to attain faith s goal, the salvation of their souls. The account of the disciples on the Road to Emmaus highlights for us the real presence of Christ in the Scriptures and the Eucharist. As Christ explains the Scriptures, their hearts burn within them. The Holy Spirit is revealing to them the presence of God. As Jesus breaks the bread, their eyes are open and they recognize him as the Risen Lord. The celebration of the Mass is the highlight of our Christian life because we hear the Word of God proclaimed in the Scriptures (the Table of the Word) and we receive the Bread of Life (the Table of the Eucharist). Openness to the Holy Spirit allows God s Word to penetrate our hearts and enables us to discern God s will in our lives. The Eucharist received in faith re-inscribes the image of Christ on our souls, allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us to act on God s Word and lead us to share his divine life. As disciples of Christ, we are called to conduct Godly lives in reverence, faith and hope. We will celebrate the presence of the Risen Christ in our lives in the Sacrament of First Holy Communion this coming Saturday morning, May 6th. Fifty-eight of our children will receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time. It is wonderful to share this gift of our faith as we gather together around the Table of the Lord. We honor the Virgin Mary in a special way throughout the month of May. We will put up a statue of the Blessed Mother on the Holy Family altar for the month as a reminder of her special role in God s plan of salvation and in our lives as Catholics. I encourage everyone to pray at least one mystery of the rosary each day this month as we celebrate the gift of salvation during the Easter season. May Crowning, led by the school students, will be celebrated on Friday, May 12th, at 7 pm in the church. All are welcome. The New Parishioner Dinner will be held on Monday to welcome all parishioners who have registered in the last six months. Thank you to the members of the Welcome Wagon and volunteers for hosting this event. The Parents Association will be hosting a textile Recycling Drive on Saturday, May 13th. Please see the bulletin for details. Also on May 13th, The Asian American Group of SRB will host a Luau Night. This will be a fun evening of food, dancing and fellowship for only $10 a person. All the proceeds will help fund our Simbang Gabi celebration in Advent. Please see the bulletin for details. Mothers Day is Sunday, May 14th. The Respect Life group will host the annual Mothers Day Flower Sale to benefit the Women s Center to aid families in crisis pregnancy. There will also be a second collection for Catholic Charities. The need is extremely urgent again this year since, due to the ongoing budget crisis in Springfield, the state owes over $30 million to fund services that have already been provided. Cardinal Cupich has asked us to focus on two areas of importance to the Catholic faithful and all the people of Chicago. The first is the ongoing violence, particularly gun violence, taking place in our city. He hosted the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday in Englewood to highlight the issue and has pledged $250,000 to help fund neighborhood initiatives to work with young people in troubled communities. All of us are encouraged to take an active role in some way to help overcome the despair and decay that plague so many of our neighborhoods. The second area is that of immigration reform. Our system is clearly broken, creating hardships for many families as well as divisions in the country on how best to approach the issue. Consequently, much money, time and energy has been wasted as the problem becomes more critical. The Cardinal asks us to actively pursue the Catholic principles of mercy, solidarity and social justice to work together for the common good and ensuring the integrity of our borders. I am giving a Men s Retreat this weekend for about 80 men at the Franciscan Retreat Center in Lemont. Please keep these men in your prayers. I will be back in the parish later this afternoon. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
