Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Fifth Sunday of Easter The reading from the Acts of the Apostles describes St. Paul s difficulties when he first arrives in Jerusalem after his conversion. The disciples initially act with disbelief and are afraid of Paul. Paul, the last they had heard, was a violent persecutor of Christians. Barnabas, a Church leader, speaks on behalf of Paul, easing everyone s fears. Paul then moved about freely in Jerusalem and spoke out boldly in the name of the Lord. Soon a plot is hatched to kill Paul. The Church, which St. Luke describes as at peace and growing in numbers, sends Paul away to safety. In the first Letter of St. John, we hear his response to the mistaken belief of some Christians, that all that is necessary for salvation is professing faith in Jesus. Throughout John s Letter we hear him speak of the commandment to love others. St. John tells us: Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. To remain in Christ one must keep his commandments. In the Gospel of John today Jesus tells us he is the true vine, and his Father is the vine grower. Jesus says we are the branches that glorify God when we bear much fruit and become his disciples. This happens, says Jesus, when we remain in him through lives of love. God then prunes the branches in order that we may bear much fruit. Acts 9: John 3: John 15: 1-8 May: The Month of Mary May is the month when we traditionally honor Mary with a special emphasis on her role in the devotional life of the Church. We celebrate May Crowning, pray the rosary daily (at least one decade of the mysteries) and bring out the old favorite Marian hymns. For many people these devotions seem to be a nostalgic clinging to the past, but in fact are really tried and true ways to help bring us into the presence of God. The devotional life of the Church endures because it has deep spiritual meaning for those who practice it. Part of the reason for this is because Mary reminds us of ourselves. When we pray with Mary we see our story in her story. The meditation on the mysteries of the rosary draw us into the life of Christ. The mysteries allow us to see him through the eyes of Mary. These salvific events of Jesus life then become real to us, helping us to relate God s plan of salvation to the events and circumstances of our own lives. In Mary s response to the Christ events in her life, we are given a model for our own response. Of course, the role of Mary is much greater than this, but looking at Mary through this lens makes a good starting point for our own reflections on the love of God. May Mary s Magnificat lead us to our own exaltation in the joy of Easter!

3 Fifth Sunday of Easter Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Firth Sunday of Easter. In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear that St. Paul has begun his public ministry, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus. The Church was at peace and grew in numbers. In spite of troubles with the Hellenists and the Jewish leaders, the community of faith had the peace and consolation of the Holy Spirit. This is a good reminder that we, too, can have inner peace if we trust in the Lord. St. John tells us in his First Letter that if we keep his commandments we will remain in God s love and our hearts will be reassured and we will experience the presence of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. In the gospel Jesus reminds us that God is the vine grower. It is God himself who nurtures and protects us. Our Sunday readings during the Easter season from John s gospel show us that Jesus acts out of the power of God s love. Salvation comes from participating in that love by allowing ourselves to be drawn into the experience of that love. The Scriptures give us the story: God is telling us about his redemptive activities in human history, culminating in the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. In today s gospel, Jesus reminds us that we have to stay connected to the source, which is Christ himself. To stay connected to the source is why we come to mass, pray, read the Bible and celebrate the sacraments. Failure to do so cuts us off from the source of the love that is the power that conquers sin and death. Last week Jesus told us to listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd and to follow that voice. Today we hear that we are the branches connected to the vine of Christ. Both these gospel stories are metaphors for staying connected to the source of life. When we bear the good fruit of the Spirit we know we are connected to the vine. We are grafted onto the true vine at Baptism when we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. We are to nurture that gift, listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us and bear good fruit by obeying Christ s commands to love God and our neighbor. On Thursday the Sports Association hosted the annual Sports Award Banquet. It s a nice time to recognize the achievements of our student athletes. More importantly, it was a time to celebrate the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation and friendship. I also want to recognize all the board members of the Sports Association and all the coaches who spend hundreds of hours every year to provide these opportunities for our young people. Thank you to the board, the coaches, volunteers and parents who worked so hard on this evening and throughout the year. The 8th Grade Rummage Sale will be held this Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Kernaghan Hall. There are always some good bargains to be had. Proceeds go to the 8th Grade Class Gift to the school. On Saturday we will celebrate the Sacrament of First Holy Communion with sixty-two of our children and their families. This is always a beautiful celebration of our faith. It is a joy and an honor to be part of this major event in the life of these young people. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives as Catholics, the gift of the Risen Christ himself, fulfilling his promise to be with us to the end of the age. It is in the Eucharist that we draw our strength, our hope, our very spiritual life. As we keep these children in our prayers, let us also take the time to reflect on the joy, the grace and the goodness of God for this gift in our own lives. On Sunday we will host our New Parishioner Blessing and Reception. Our new parishioners have been invited to the noon mass for a special blessing. Please welcome them into our community. Mrs. Carrie Mijal will be leaving us the end of the school year to take on her new role as the School Principal at Visitation Parish in Elmhurst. She has been a guiding light to our families for the past ten years and will be deeply missed. I am pleased to announce that Ms. Deanne Roy has accepted the positon as the new principal for our parish school beginning on July 1st. Please see my letter on page four for more details. Please mark your calendars for Friday May 11th when we will honor our Blessed Mother with the celebration of May Crowning at 7 p.m. Catholics traditionally devote the month of May to Mary as a way to keep connected with the story of our faith. I have shared a few reflections on page two. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

April 29, 2018 Dear Parishioners, With the support of the Search Committee, I am pleased to announce that I have hired a new principal beginning July 1st. Deanne Roy comes to us with over 25 years of experience in elementary education, including the last 16 years as principal at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School in Crystal Lake. She has a strong background in administration, staff development and training, curriculum mapping and student mentoring. I know that Ms. Roy is highly qualified to build on the legacies of Sr. Mary Lou and Mrs. Mijal, continuing our long-standing traditions of focusing on the whole child in a faith-filled family environment. At the same time she will lead our school as we pursue continued growth and strive to build upon our rigorous academics. I am so grateful for all that Mrs. Mijal has accomplished these past ten years to increase our enrollment and bring in many new programs, as well as her dedication to our students, families and staff. Mrs. Mijal has done an outstanding job. In the coming weeks, Mrs. Mijal and Ms. Roy will work together on this transition. Mrs. Mijal will continue to manage the school, while helping Ms. Roy to become familiar with us. We hope to have an open house to meet the families before the end of the year. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

She relies on the Catholic Charities Senior Food Nutrition Program for all of her meals. Last year 145,547 food packages were delivered to low-income seniors in Cook and Lake counties. Without the food they receive from us, they would have to choose between a healthy diet and paying for medication and other necessities. Please give to Catholic Charities on Mother s Day to help seniors stay healthy. Learn more at Charity, patience, and tenderness are very beautiful gifts.
