The prophet Isaiah tells them to be strong and fear not for God will protect them. The Lord will come to save them. He will make the blind see, the deaf hear, the lame to leap like stags and the mute to sing. Further he will turn the burning sands into pools of water and cause rivers to come forth in the dry land. St. James tells his listeners to treat the poor with the same dignity and reverence that they give to the rich, since God himself has chosen the poor to be heirs to his kingdom. In the gospel Jesus cures a deaf man who has a speech impediment. The people are astonished and go out proclaiming the wonders of his healing power. Isaiah 35:4-7a James 2:1-5 Mark 7:31-37 Labor Day Our nation will celebrate Labor Day on Monday, September 7th. The Church teaching on the value and dignity of human labor goes all the way back to the story of creation. In the first reading, St. Paul reminds the Corinthians that God multiplies his favors among his people, so that they will always have a surplus for good works. Since God supplies all they need in abundance he exhorts the people to be generous in their giving to the poor. In the gospel, Jesus tells his disciples to always be ready for their master s return. When the Lord returns and finds his faithful people waiting for him, the Lord himself will put on an apron and wait on his servants. 2 Corinthians 9:8-11 Luke 12: 35 40

3 Twenty-Third Sunday In Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures remind us of the tremendous power of God in our lives, especially in times of trouble. The prophet Isaiah tells the people that God will protect Israel from their stronger, more militant neighbors, will heal the sick, and will provide flowing rivers in the desert and fill the parched land with pools of life-giving water. In the second reading we hear that God chooses the poor of the world to be rich in faith and heirs to the kingdom which he promises to those who love him. In the gospel Jesus cures a deaf man with a speech impediment. What is interesting to me about the gospel, beyond the astonishment of the crowd at the miraculous healing power of Jesus word, is the fact that the story takes place in the Decapolis. The people of the Decapolis (Greek for ten cities) were Gentiles, living east of the Sea of Galilee beyond the Jordan River, outside of Israel. In touching the man, Jesus makes himself ritually unclean. This is something that an observant Jew would never do. The story tells us that God s salvation is open to all, perhaps the least likely ones, and that God will go to unimagined lengths in order to save his people. God invites us to trust in his power and mercy, and calls us to extend his compassion to the needy. You may have noticed that the paper Recycling Bin is back. For those of you who do not know the history, we used to have the recycling bins several years ago, with the money raised going to the school (about $3,000 per year). But because of the weight of the truck, the parking lot had to be resurfaced every three years at a cost of about $10,000. So I decided to remove the bins. Given Pope Francis new emphasis of care for our Common Home, I thought we could help raise awareness and be part of the solution. The funds raised will now go to the capital fund to cover any future costs of resurfacing the lot. I m not sure if there is a net ecological benefit from the tradeoff of the recycled paper versus the torn up pavement and the polluting effects of resurfacing, but we live in an imperfect world and sometimes have to make imperfect choices. We had a great time at the Parish Picnic last Sunday. Over 200 people came together at Dunham Park to celebrate our parish community, the Eucharist and our fellowship as the living body of Christ. The weather really turned out for us. There wasn t any rain, and the overcast skies kept down the heat. We were able to enjoy the grilled food, side dishes and desserts. The children enjoyed the moonwalk, the games, face-painting, and generally running around and having a good time. Thank you to the Parish Council, and all the parish organizations who helped make our day fun. We hope to have some pictures to share in next week s bulletin. Meet the Teacher Night was held this past Thursday, giving the school families an opportunity to meet the staff, see their children s classrooms and interact with the School Board members. On Monday our nation will celebrate Labor Day. The Church reminds us that work is not simply a means to a paycheck to take care of our material wants and needs. The dignity of work, in imitation of God s own work in creation, both fulfills us, giving meaning and purpose to our lives, and cooperates with God s plan for stewardship of creation to help him build his kingdom on earth. The rectory, school and religious education offices will be closed to honor our parish employees. Our holiday mass will be at 8:30 a.m. We honor working people everywhere, those who work hard to build our nation and our community, those who serve and protect us, and those who make our everyday lives easier. We remember those who struggled, and continue to fight for, the rights of working people. Religious Education classes begin this coming Saturday. We have several new catechists as well as a new DRE, Mary Ellen Casselman. She brings new energy and nearly twenty years of experience to our program. The first day of class is extremely hectic, and walk-ins make it very difficult on the staff and volunteers. Please register this week at the RE office if you have not already done so. Next weekend we will celebrate the Feast of St. Robert Bellarmine. We will also celebrate Catechetical Sunday. At the 10 a.m. Family mass there will be a special Blessing of Catechists for the catechists in the Saturday morning program and those who teach religion in the school. We also formally welcome Mary Ellen Casselman, our new Director of Religious Education and coordinator of sacramental preparation for all the children in our parish. Our Religious Education families will host Coffee and Donuts after all the masses next Sunday. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

A Warm Welcome to our New Parishioners Mr. Andrew Morkes and Ms. Amy McKenna-Morkes and Family Mr. and Mrs. Mark Gilhuly THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 9:00 AM KERNAGHAN HALL MEETING ROOM Every week we explore the scriptures for the coming Sunday. Learn about the scriptures through prayer and discussion with other parishioners. Questions? Call Bill at or srbvolunteers@yahoo.com. In honor of Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2015 the Parish Office will be closed. The daily Mass will be at 8:30 am. The parish bulletin is made possible through the people that take out ads on the inside back cover. Please take a look at the list of advertisers and patronize them whenever you have a need for the services they provide. Looking for Leaders to run Children s Liturgy of the Word St. Robert s is planning on starting a Children s Liturgy of the Word beginning Fall At the 10:00 mass, children will be invited to come forward to attend Children s Liturgy of the Word. This ministry serves children, by proclaiming God s word on a level that they understand, and by reflecting on its meaning in their lives. It will most likely be held in Kernaghan Hall. We are looking for a few adults to create a team. No formal training is needed but there will be some basic instruction and of course you will need Virtus Training. SRB will be glad to help with those. For more information, contact Trina Eifert or pnteifert@sbcglobal.net.
