Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden The Ascension of the Lord Today we hear the beginning of St. Luke s account of the Acts of the Apostles. The reading describes the last encounter shared by Jesus with his followers before his Ascension into heaven. Luke says that Jesus was with the believers for forty days after his resurrection speaking about the kingdom of God. Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to come upon them when he ascends, and that they will be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. In the second reading, St. Paul urges the Ephesians to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. While Christ has given his followers different gifts (prophets, teachers, etc.), these gifts are all to be used to build up the Body of Christ until we all attain the unity of faith. The conclusion of St. Mark s gospel describes the Ascension. Jesus instructs his followers to go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel. He also reassures them by describing signs which will accompany those who believe. After he spoke these encouraging words, Jesus was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. Acts 1: 1-11 Ephesians 4: 1-13 Mark 16: Mother s Day Moms have been celebrated throughout time, of course, and in recorded events in Egyptian, Greek and Roman times. The origins of a specific Mother's Day go all the way back to the 16th century and the practice of visiting one's "mother church" once a year. On that day, dark ages moms would be reunited with their children at church. In the United States, a mother and social activist, Julia Ward Howe, worked to create a Mother's Day for Peace day during the Civil War in an attempt to organize mothers against war. It was not until 1914 that President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day to honor mothers whose sons had died in war. Since then, Mother's Day has gone on to become the most popular day of the year. Mother's Day is celebrated around the world, though the actual date changes depending on the country. Today let us remember our mothers, living and deceased, and thank them for all they have done for us.

3 The Ascension of the Lord Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Ascension completes Jesus earthly journey which began when the Blessed Mother said Yes to the Archangel Gabriel s message of the Annunciation. The story of Jesus life on earth is God s response to sin and alienation that reunites us with the divine. It is the story of Jesus human conquest that allows our fallen humanity to be restored to grace. Back on the Second Sunday of Lent, we witnessed Jesus Transfiguration on Mt. Tabor. Jesus was transfigured into his glorified body, to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, represented by Moses and Elijah. The Mountain signifies heaven. Had Jesus remained on the Mountain (ascending to heaven), our salvation would not have been accomplished. Jesus would have gone back to heaven in his divinity, leaving humanity unredeemed. It was his decision to come down the mountain, going to die on the Cross, that makes possible the redemption of our human nature. The good news of Easter is the resurrection of the human body from the dead. In the glory of the Ascension, Jesus opens the gates of heaven to us. We receive the promise of this at the Assumption of the Blessed Mother (celebrated on August 15). When our earthly journey is complete we, too, will rise with Christ to spend eternity with him. Jesus now sits at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. St. Luke reminds us in the Acts of the Apostles that for the past forty days Christ has appeared to them with proofs that he, indeed, is the same Christ who was crucified and is now risen from the dead. He has been teaching them about the kingdom of God and promises to send them the Holy Spirit. When he ascends into heaven, the disciples are staring at the sky. This is a perfectly normal reaction. Watching someone ascend the sky to heaven doesn t happen every day. As they are watching and pondering, two men (angels) appear and promise them that Jesus will return in the same way. They are referring to the Second Coming when Jesus will return in glory at the end of time. Jesus gives his disciples another promise as well as a mission. His final words before his Ascension promise that they will be baptized with the Holy Spirit and that they will receive the commission to baptize and to preach the good news to all the nations. We celebrate this conclusion of the Easter mysteries at the Feast of Pentecost. This vision that we hear about today is our hope and our reassurance that God is with us. The Protestant Reformer John Calvin reminds us that the good news of Jesus Christ is that he who will judge us at the throne of heaven is himself the one who loved us so much that he gave his life for us. This hope and assurance should give us the courage to live Jesus commandment to love one another as he has loved us. The Red Ribbon Gala was a wonderful time. Nearly 200 people gathered at Porretta s Banquet hall for good food, fellowship, raffles and auctions to support our parish and school. Thank you to Kathy Ernst, her committee and all the volunteers who made it possible. We hope to have the financial results and pictures available next week. Mother s Day Flowers are on sale today after all the masses. These beautiful flowers make a wonderful gift. All proceeds will go to support the work of the Women s Centers to help families in crisis pregnancy and promote the dignity of all human life. Our second collection today is for Catholic Charities to help needy families throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Thank you all for your continued generosity. Our Adult Faith Series continues with Movie Night this Tuesday on the life of Michelangelo; and with a reflection on the beatitude Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, led by Fr. Thadeo from Ascension-St. Susanna, on Wednesday. All are welcome. Next Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, marking the birth of the Church and the end of the Easter Season. Children s Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated at the 10 a.m. mass. Please mark your calendars for the Parents Association Bingo Night to be held on Saturday, June 2nd. Details should be available in next week s bulletin. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
