Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Fifth Sunday of Easter In the Acts of the Apostles, St. Peter declares that it is not right for the apostles to neglect the Word of God in order to take care of the daily tasks of running the Church. They appoint seven men, filled with the Holy Spirit, to this task, and the Word of God continued to spread. In his first letter to the early Church, St. Peter says that Christ is the cornerstone on which God s kingdom is built. He exhorts his followers to become living stones in imitation of Christ by living Godly lives to build up his kingdom on earth. In the gospel, Jesus tells the disciples not to be afraid. He is going to prepare a place for them in his Father s house and will come back for them later. The disciples do not understand and they ask him to show them the Father. Jesus replies, that because they have seen him, they have seen the Father. He continues that, if they do not believe his words, they should believe in the works he has done in the Father s name. Whoever believes in him will do even greater works because Jesus is going to the Father. Acts 6:1-7 1 Peter 2:4-9 John 14:1-12 Mary and Mother s Day In the month of May we honor the Blessed Mother and in a special way make extra time and prayer for our devotional life. These devotions remind us of Mary s yes to God that made possible the birth of Christ in our human nature. The motherhood of Mary confirms the full humanity of Christ in the Incarnation, sanctifying our human family. In his wonderful encyclical Marialis Cultus, Pope Paul VI puts forth a beautiful understanding of our teachings about Mary and her role in the lives of the faithful. Pope Paul reminds us that we venerate and honor Mary for her role in salvation and for the love that she had for God. It was God s will that she become the Mother of his only Son and that she nurture and support him throughout his earthly life. Therefore it is only right that she be honored above all others. Mary continues to intercede for all her children and be our guardian and protector. A mother s work is never done! So today we also honor our mothers for all they have done for us in imitation of Christ and Mary. No matter how old we get, mom is still mom. Their love and sacrifice for us throughout our lives, their generosity and care, often get taken for granted. Today we want to recognize them and to say what often goes unsaid: Thanks, Mom!

3 Fifth Sunday of Easter Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Jesus begins today s gospel by telling his disciples do not let your hearts be troubled. This is one of the greatest lines in Scripture. Jesus tells us not to be afraid more often than any other phrase in the gospels. It is a very good lens through which we should view our faith and our lives. Everything Jesus teaches us is about the love and mercy that God wants to share with us, and how we can appropriate that grace in our lives. Jesus begins the gospel with do not let your hearts be troubled because he needs to reassure the disciples that, even though troubled times are ahead, everything is going to be okay. They, of course, misunderstand him. They will scatter after his arrest in the garden and be totally discouraged by his crucifixion. They do not trust in his Word. This is often true of all of us. We can misunderstand God s will for us, and allow the cares and anxieties of the world to drown out the voice of the Good Shepherd. We forget that God is with us in our times of trouble, and we can let our fears control us. That is why it is important to view our life and faith through this lens of God s promise do not let your hearts be troubled. Remember the voice of Christ in the 23rd Psalm which we heard last week, I will fear no evil for thou art with me...surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. The disciples forgot this promise in Jesus darkest hour. We need to see beyond the cross to the glory of the resurrection in our daily lives. Jesus goes on to tell them that he is going to prepare a place for them and will come back to take them with him. This is the promise of eternal life. They misunderstand this, too. Thomas says, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way? and Phillip says, show us the Father and it will be enough. Jesus answers are astounding and should not be taken lightly. He says, I am the way, the truth and the life. If we want to realize the love and the promise we have to follow him. In his first letter, St. Peter tells us we have to offer our lives as spiritual sacrifices so that we can become God s holy people. Jesus answer to Phillip is equally startling, if you have seen me, you have seen the Father. He promises that if we believe in him or in the works he has accomplished we will do even greater things because he is going to the Father. Jesus is giving us the promise of the Holy Spirit (we ll hear this next week). Jesus is claiming to be God; and if we believe him, we will be able to overcome the world, too. A wonderful promise but it requires complete trust and an unconditional love for God that governs every aspect of our lives. What they forgot in the garden, the disciples remembered in their own darkest hour, as they were martyred for their love of Christ. Do not let your hearts be troubled. Let go of fear so as to live in love and compassion of Christ. Thank you to Janet LaPlume and the volunteers for hosting the New Parishioner Dinner last Monday. Over thirty people enjoyed a fun evening of food and fellowship. Welcome to all our new families. Last Saturday we celebrated the Sacrament of First Holy Communion with fifty-eight of our children. Congratulations to all our First Communicants and their families. Thanks to all our staff, catechists and volunteers who made this wonderful celebration possible. The Knights of Columbus Shamrocks for Kids was incredibly successful again this year. Last Sunday they presented Fr. Scott with a check for $19,000 for Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. Thank you to al the Knights for all their hard work. Today is Mother s Day. I would like to extend my warm wishes to all moms, grandmothers, godmothers, mothersin-law and step-moms. May this be a special day for them. Our Respect Life Group is hosting their annual Flower Sale to raise money for the Women s Center. We are also holding a second collection for Catholic Charities. There is a renewed urgency for this collection since the state continues without a budget and owes Catholic Charities over $30 million dollars for services already received. On Wednesday the school will host their Spring Band Concert at 7 p.m. in Kernaghan Hall. All are welcome. The PPC and Liturgy Board will be hosting Coffee and Donuts after all the masses next weekend. Children s Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated next Sunday at 10 a.m. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

The Preschool and Pre K students decorated a paper square and together they made hands reaching for the stars... RJ Shea was Principal for the Day alongside Mrs. Mijal. Principal RJ made a big decision to let his class go to Dunham Park to play this morning. We all had a lot of fun!

7 Fifth Sunday of Easter Page 7 CLEAN WATER FUNDRAISER Thanks to your generosity, we collected over $2000 for the Clean Water Fundraiser. Today, Sister Ann and Sister Lea showed us how one 10 cent packet of purifier cleans 2.5 gallons of water, so that's 5000 gallons of clean water for the children of Africa. We also had enough for the Sisters to purchase a solar panel that will hopefully one day bring water, as well as purify it, for the villages. Manually cleaning the water was difficult and took a long time, but it worked! The dirt coagulated and was ready for straining and then drinking. How blessed are we to have clean drinking water?
