He goes into the desert and prays for death. An angel orders him to get up and eat. Elijah sees that food and water has been placed next to him. He eats and drinks. Strengthened by the food, he makes a journey of forty days and nights to Mount Horeb, the mountain of God. In the second reading, St. Paul exhorts the Ephesians to be imitators of God by living in love as Christ loved us. In the gospel, the people grumble against Jesus because he claims to be the bread come down from heaven. They say that since they know his father and mother, how can he have come down from heaven? Jesus repeats that he is the bread of life and whoever believes in him has eternal life. He astounds them by concluding that the bread that he will give is his own flesh for the life of the world. 1 Kings 19: 4-8 Ephesians 4:30-5:2 John 6: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Saturday August 15 The Transfiguration of Christ (celebrated August 6th) and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary prefigure our hope and belief in our own resurrection and glorified body in heaven. This celebration commemorates our belief that, at the exact moment of her death, Mary was taken body and soul into heaven. The first reading from the Book of Revelation provides vivid imagery of a pregnant woman clothed with the sun, wearing a crown of twelve stars and fleeing a huge red dragon waiting to devour her child. Traditionally this woman has been identified with Mary. In the second reading, from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, Paul proclaims the reality of Christ s resurrection and the belief that those who belong to Christ will also be brought to life. The gospel reading from Luke contains Mary s Magnificat. Mary proclaims that all generations will call her blessed. As we celebrate Mary s Assumption, we, together with all generations, call her blessed as we wait in hope for our own bodily resurrection and glorification. Revelation 11: 19a, 12: 1-6a, 10ab 1 Corinthians 15: Luke 1: 39-56
3 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures continue the Bread of Life discourse, the theme of God feeding us, giving us strength and giving us life itself. In the Old Testament reading from the First Book of Kings, God feeds Elijah to nourish him for his journey. In St. John s gospel reading Jesus promises to give the bread of eternal life. In the first reading, Elijah has fled into the desert to escape from King Ahab and Queen Jezebel who are seeking to kill him. Being a prophet of the Lord and seeking to do God s will has made Elijah s life difficult, and he finds that he does not have the strength to continue. He is weary and prays for death. God sends him an angel and orders him to get up and eat. He lays down to go back to sleep. Again the angel orders him to get up and eat. Elijah eats what God has provided and has the strength to go on. He travels for forty days to Mt. Horeb, the mountain of God. I think that most of us have felt this way at one time or another. The burdens and responsibilities of life often seem overwhelming. While we probably haven t prayed for death, there have certainly been times when we just want to run away from life. We know, however, that this is just a feeling. Feelings are real, but they are not our reality. Feelings come and go. St. Ignatius of Loyola cautions us to never act on feelings of desolation, but to wait upon the Lord. Sometimes simply having something to eat and getting a good night s sleep, especially after a time of prayer when God has nourished and refreshed the spirit, is enough to give a new perspective and the strength to go on. In the gospel, the people are disappointed that Christ is not going to give them an unlimited supply of bread. They say that because they know his father and mother (his human origins) they do not believe that he came down from heaven nor that he can deliver on his promise. Jesus tells them that if they believe in his words they will have eternal life. He repeats that he is the living bread come down from heaven; adding, and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. This promise of the Eucharist will be made explicit in next week s gospel. This gift of his flesh for the life of the world is the ongoing nourishment of our souls that unites us to God. This is why Jesus calls it the bread of eternal life. When we get spiritually tired, weary of the trials of life, or when we think that God is far from us, the Eucharist reminds us that God is always right here with us. Except in extreme circumstances, the Eucharist is always to be received in the context of prayer within the community of faith (usually at Sunday mass). There are many reasons for this, but the primary reason is that it is in prayer that we open ourselves to God and thus are able to receive the grace that he offers; and it is in the context of the community of faith that we realize that we are not alone, that the grace of God is present, through the Holy Spirit, in the living body of Christ. Just as bodies need food and sleep, so, too, our souls need the nourishment and refreshment that only Christ himself can give. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is this Saturday, August 15th. We will celebrate the solemnity with masses at 8:30 a.m. and at 5 p.m. In the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary we celebrate the belief that she ascended directly to heaven at the moment of her death and the promise of our own glorification in the presence of God (see page two). The solemnity is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year. A reminder to school families that the parent packet pick-up for the new year and the allergy information meeting is Tuesday evening. The new school family reception will be held on Tuesday, August 18th (see page nine). Make plans to attend the Parish Picnic on Sunday, August 30th at Dunham Park. Mass will be celebrated at noon at the park. There will not be a noon mass in the church (details on page seven). Today we welcome Maria Delia Salazar from the Peruvian Missions to lead our Summer Mission Appeal. She works with the Archdiocese of Arequipa in Peru to support the building of churches and the formation of catechists and seminarians, as well as supporting soup kitchens and a school for at-risk children. There will be a second collection at all masses this weekend to support the work of the Peruvian bishops. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

6 Page 6 August 9, 2015 Now is your chance... Catechists Are Needed for the school year! How can our rich intellectual and spiritual traditions be passed down to the young people of our parish? Who will teach the children s hearts and minds what it means to be Catholic? We need you! The St. Robert s Religious Education Program needs you! You can team-teach with a friend or spouse, you can teach on your own. You do not have to be a professional teacher, experience helps but is not necessary and there are trained individuals, other catechists and myself to help you. Training is offered beginning in late August and goes throughout the year. Saturday mornings twice a month for 16 weeks September-April 2 openings for 3rd and 6th 5th, 7th, 8th (we are growing and need your help) Whether you are single or married, with or without children, old or young, it is everyone s responsibility. Why wait for someone else to volunteer. Why don t you be the first one to pick up the phone and call. Religious Education Office at or srbre1@yahoo.com Catechist s families pay half tuition. Maybe we can help each other. Call now! Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults The RCIA is a process for those considering becoming Catholic, specifically: For those who are not baptized and are in the process of making a decision to become Catholic For those who were baptized and are in another faith, yet are thinking of becoming Catholic For those who were baptized Roman Catholic and have not received the Eucharist or Confirmation The process is designed to assist those interested in Catholicism, to learn about our faith, our traditions, and our celebrations. Each person is invited to reflect on his or her own relationship with God and the faith community. We journey though this process together, assisting each other in our response to God s call. If you or someone you know is interested in the RCIA, please call Deacon Bill Frere at the Adult Education Office (773) for more information. Looking for Leaders to run Children s Liturgy of the Word St. Robert s is planning on starting a Children s Liturgy of the Word beginning Fall At the 10:00 mass, children will be invited to come forward to attend Children s Liturgy of the Word. This ministry serves children, by proclaiming God s word on a level that they understand, and by reflecting on its meaning in their lives. It will most likely be held in Kernaghan Hall. We are looking for a few adults to create a team. No formal training is needed but there will be some basic instruction and of course you will need Virtus Training. SRB will be glad to help with those. For more information, contact Trina Eifert or pnteifert@sbcglobal.net.

8 Page 8 August 9, 2015 This letter will hopefully: be informative, answer your questions and assist you in registering your child for next year's religion classes. The registration form is available in the rectory or please call the Religious Education Office Monday-Thursday. The fees for religion classes for the upcoming school year are as follows: 1 child: $215.00, 2 children: , 3 or more children: If you are not a member of Saint Robert's Parish the fees will be an additional $ Please call the rectory as soon as possible at if you would like to register in the parish. We currently offer Saturday morning classes beginning PROMPTLY at 9:30 am and concluding at NOON. All classes will be held in the St. Robert's School building. Classes are two Saturdays a month. A calendar will be ed to you as soon as it is available. HOW TO REGISTER FOR FALL CLASSES Please return the registration form along with a minimum of $ I would like to order the children's books and supplies before the prices change for the next school year. By doing this I do not have to raise the tuition. You can mail it in. If registration fees are a problem please send a note with your form or call the Religious Education Office. Do not let this detain you from returning your registration. All of our classes depend largely upon availability of volunteers to teach the classes and the attendance of the children after the classes start. Training is available and necessary for all catechists, new and returning and that training will be provided. The work of catechists is vital to preserving our Catholic legacy, and it is a rewarding ministry. There is no better way to instill faith in your children than by sharing in their religious education as a catechist. Catechists, (teachers of religion) and adult assistance is always needed. The special care our Catechists take to teach our children and the memories of the lessons are what keep our children interested in learning more about their Catholic faith and how special they are to God. These things are what will carry them through their lifetime. We hope many parents will consider teaching in our program. If you are interested in being a catechist or being an aide please call the Religious Education Office at ext There is a discount available for catechists. Many thanks for continuing to support the St. Robert's Religious Education program. Life Line Screening Saint Robert Bellarmine Church is pleased to offer a preventive health event.
