Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Passion (Palm) Sunday This last Sunday of Lent we hear two Gospel readings, both of which describe the climactic events for the Son of God coming as man. The opening gospel is Mark s description of Jesus final entry into Jerusalem, with the people celebrating him. They equate Jesus to a conquering King, like David, crying out, Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! The people believe he will reign as a political figure. In less than a week the people turn on him as we see in Mark s Passion narrative, which includes several accounts of Jesus being abandoned by the very people he came to save. Judas turns on him; the disciples left him and fled; the religious leaders, through lies, condemned him as deserving to die ; soldiers mocked and spat on him; Pilate, the secular ruler, knowingly condemns an innocent man; and the crowds, who praised him a week ago, call for the release of the convicted murderer Barabbas instead of Jesus. Our reading from the prophet Isaiah, written seven hundred years earlier, describes this suffering servant who speaks for God and ultimately will triumph, but nonetheless is rejected by all. God s servant says, I gave my back to those who beat me...my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. St. Paul in the Letter to the Philippians describes Jesus as one equal to God (revealing the early Church s belief in his divinity), and yet he took the form of a slave...and...he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death. For this obedience, Jesus is the glory of God, who all people in heaven and on earth and under the earth will confess as Lord. Mark 11: 1-10 Isaiah 50: 4-7 Philippians 2: 6-11 Mark 14: 1 15: 47 The Triduum The Triduum, Latin for Three Days, is the most sacred time in the life of the Church. These three days, consisting of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, the Passion of the Lord on Good Friday and the Resurrection of Jesus at the Easter Vigil are really one continuous celebration of the salvific work of Christ. On Holy Thursday Jesus celebrates the Last Supper, both a great feast and an announcement of his coming death. He is celebrating the Passover, the Hebrew participation in God s deliverance of his people from slavery in Egypt. Jesus institutes the Eucharist, his continuing presence in his Church. On Good Friday we celebrate Christ s Passion. Jesus, innocent and without sin, suffers cruel torture and death as a criminal. But it is his suffering and death for the sins of fallen humanity that Jesus brings God s mercy and forgiveness to the human race. Good Friday, in the depths of its tragedy, reveals to us the fathomless goodness of God. Jesus enters into the tomb, and at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday he conquers evil. His glorious Resurrection destroys sin and death forever.

3 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate Passion Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, the most sacred time of the year. This is the only day of the year in which we hear two gospels. These two gospels could not be more different. The entrance gospel describes Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem, with the crowds crying Hosanna!, shouting for joy at the coming of the Messiah, spreading their cloaks on the road before him and waving palm branches to honor him. The gospel of the day is the reading of the Passion, recounting Jesus betrayal, crucifixion and death. These two gospels reflect our own divided nature. We have faith, we believe in the salvation of the Lord, we trust in his goodness and we want to be better people, reflecting the goodness in which we were created. But there is a side to our nature which is self-absorbed and self-reliant. We look to the values of the world for security and self-esteem because a part of us does not trust in the Lord nor believes in the value of self-denial as the road to sanctification. A closer reading of the gospel gives us hope. Jesus goes to the cross without condemning neither his accusers nor his friends who denied him. The Lord s treatment of Peter and Peter s conversion are the greatest hope for ourselves. Peter falls asleep in the garden. Jesus asks, could you not keep watch for one hour? The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Then he simply says, It is enough. Get up, let us go. Jesus overlooks Peter s lack of willpower. Our spirit is willing but our flesh is weak. Our human wills do not have the spiritual strength to overcome the world unaided. And Jesus says to us, too, never mind, let s go on. Peter tells Jesus that even if everyone else has their faith shaken he will never lose faith. Jesus, however, tells Peter that he will deny him three times. In fact, Peter does deny him and when the cock crows, he weeps bitterly. This is the great hope for all of us. Peter s weeping is the sign of his conversion, his recognition that he indeed is in need of grace. It is only when he admits his weakness that the grace of God is able to enter in. And, of course, we know the rest of the story. Jesus is resurrected and Peter is given the keys to the kingdom. This forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit is available to us as well. We often fail, but God s forgiveness is always available to allow us to get up and go on. All we have to do is accept our weakness and trust that God s grace is enough. The Church will be closed during the first part of the week for preparations and rehearsals for the Triduum services, except for morning mass and funerals. The Church will not be open for quiet prayer on Wednesday, but will be closed after the morning mass. The Triduum will begin on Holy Thursday, March 29th, with morning prayer at 8:30. There will be a school prayer service at 9:30 a.m. We will celebrate the Mass of the Lord s Supper at 7 p.m., concluding with a Eucharistic Procession. The church will remain open until midnight for Adoration and quiet prayer. On Good Friday, March 30th, the church will open at noon for private prayer. Stations of the Cross will be celebrated at 3 p.m. The celebration of the Passion of the Lord will begin at 7 p.m., concluding with the Veneration of the Cross and distribution of Holy Communion. On Holy Saturday, March 31st, the Blessing of the Easter Food Baskets will take place at 1 p.m. downstairs in Kernaghan Hall. The Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil will begin at 7 p.m. (There will not be a 5 p.m. mass on Holy Saturday). Everyone is invited and encouraged to join us in these most holy celebrations of our faith. Please note that no other masses, not even funerals, are permitted on these three days. Our Easter Sunday masses will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Our collection on Holy Thursday will benefit the Alexian Brothers in their ministry to those in the Chicago area suffering with HIV/AIDS. The collection on Good Friday will benefit the Franciscans in the Holy Land in the upkeep of Christian shrines and churches. Thank you to the members of the Parish Council, the bakers and the volunteers who put on the St. Joseph s Table last weekend. The proceeds benefit our STRETCH Fund. Figures should be available next week. The rectory office will close at 2:30 p.m. on Good Friday for the Holy Days and will not reopen until 8:30 a.m. Easter Monday, April 2nd. Have a blessed Holy Week. Sincerely,

Wedding Banns II Steven Kaczmarek & Fiona Meenaghan The Good Friday Collection Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. Please be generous! Holy Thursday Collection Again this year, our parish s Holy Thursday collection will be given to the Alexian Brothers HIV/ AIDS Ministry. Holy Thursday is a recognition of Christ s mandate to service: Do this in remembrance of Me. As Jesus was servant to others by washing their feet and giving his body and blood for food, so we also, in remembrance of him. humbly serve the needs of others. Your financial generosity is greatly appreciated. LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are between 18 years and 59 1/2 years of age. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious.

5 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page 5 Stations of the Cross Good Friday, March 30 at 3:00 pm The Stations of the Cross is a Lenten devotion that offers witness to Jesus Passion and Death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus Suffering, Death, and Resurrection, and to simply experience the visual images to reflect on Christ s love for us.
