Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Solemnity of Christ the King Today s celebration foretells the return of Christ at the end of time. Daniel s visions of the end-time continue as he sees the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven to receive everlasting dominion and kingship that will never be destroyed. St. John echoes this vision in the Book of Revelation. He tells the people that Christ is indeed the firstborn of the dead who is coming in the clouds in the power and glory of God. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the one who is and who was and who is to come. In the gospel Jesus tells Pilate that his kingdom is not of this world. Rather he came to testify to the truth; and that those who listen to his voice belong to him and will share in his kingdom. Daniel 7:13-14 Revelation 1:5-8 John 18: 33b-37 USCCB Meeting Response to Sexual Abuse Crisis I m sure that you were all as shocked as I was to hear that the Vatican requested a postponement on the U.S. Bishops proposed action to hold bishops and other Church leaders accountable for their inexcusable response to the abuse of innocent children, both the perpetrators themselves and those who took no actions to remove perpetrators from ministry. I am heartened by Cardinal Cupich s response to the request from the Vatican: In response, I urged that the body of bishops take up the discussion as scheduled, fine tune the documents and then take a resolution ballot to make clear to our people where we stand, but also to give the president of our conference a clear indication of the mind of the bishops as he prepares to participate in the February meeting......finally, I urged that we should meet again in March to take up the proposals, informed by the input of the other bishops conferences and the result of the February meeting, and then take a final vote as an action item. We all need to hold our leaders accountable, and to make every effort to bring healing to the victims. Fr. Neil
3 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the feast of Christ the King, the end of the Church s liturgical year. It is a time when we look forward with hope to Christ s return in glory to bring about the fullness of the heavenly kingdom. This is not a contradiction to our desire to live full lives, to enjoy our families and friends and to have plans for the future. These are all good and noble desires based upon the appreciation of the gift of life that God has given us. But what this celebration does for us is to anchor our lives in the hope of the resurrection. Our desire for the good things of heaven is the vision that shapes our hopes and dreams for our lives on earth. Our scriptures tell us about the Second Coming when Christ returns in glory. This celebration announces the end of time. When Christ returns, the world will end. The Church calls this the Eschaton, from the Greek for Last Things. The reflection on last things gives us a horizon against which to evaluate our lives. Whether God calls us home at the hour of our death or Christ comes back first, we will all be asked to give an accounting to God. How have we lived? What have we done with the time we had on this earth? How have we treated one another? How well do we measure up to the values we profess? Both the reading from the Prophet Daniel and from the Book of Revelation foretell the end time when the Son of Man will return and establish his eternal kingdom. Interestingly, today s gospel takes place on Good Friday, recounting part of the conversation between Jesus and Pontius Pilate. The irony of John s gospel is that while Jesus is on trial before the powers of the world, the world is actually on trial before the throne of God. Pilate wants to know if Jesus is the King of the Jews. Jesus replies that his kingdom is not of this world. He came into this world to testify to the truth. Truth, of course, is the living Word of God. Jesus allows himself to be crucified in this world so that the kingdom of God may be established. The kingdom is not based upon the values of this world. Rather we are to live in this world in fidelity to God s Word so that we may live in the kingdom that is not of this world, but rather the heavenly kingdom that Jesus will come back to establish. Only those who listen to his voice and belong to the truth will enter this kingdom. The mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh was a horrible act of evil, taking the lives of eleven of our brothers and sisters and devastating their families and loved ones. There is no room in our nation for hate. We must stand with all people of good will denouncing violence and working for healing. I grew up in a largely Jewish neighborhood, attended services with many of my Jewish classmates and was privileged to share their hospitality at many of their homes. It is horrifying to hear of the murder of our older brothers and sisters in faith. Freedom to worship is one of our most cherished rights. If we do not stand up for the freedom of others, actively rejecting racism and bigotry and violence, we lose our soul as Christians and as Americans. A wonderful afternoon concert of musical selections was celebrated by Music Director Dennis Costanzo and several of our cantors. The concert was followed with refreshments and fellowship. Thank you to Dennis for providing the music and all the volunteers who helped out. Advent begins next Sunday. It is a time of transition from expecting Christ s coming back at the end of time to awaiting his coming at Christmas. Christ becomes a member of our human family so that we may become members of his divine family. As we prepare for the holidays, don t rush into Christmas. I invite all of you to take time to participate in the season of Advent. It is a time of joyful expectation that has great spiritual rewards and consolations. Please see page four for the schedule of our Advent services that will help us to slow down to be with the Lord in the midst of the hectic pace that the holidays often bring. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. It is one of my favorite holidays since it focuses on blessings shared with those I love and is pretty much free of commercialism. While there are many people missing from our table, I am comforted by the memories of the blessing we shared in this life and by the assurances of faith that they are dining at the banquet table with Jesus in heaven. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
